Preparation and Characterization of Porous Filters from Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3 for SO2 Removal in Dry-FGD Process (건식 FGD 공정에서 SO2 제거를 위한 Ca(OH)2 및 CaCO3 원료의 다공성 필터 제조 및 특성)

  • Porous hydrated lime and limestone filters were prepared by foaming and gelcasting method, and their physical properties were evaluated. Through these analyses, it has been found that with the increased porosity and pore size of the filters, majority of pores in the filters were inter-connected by windows. Also, $SO_2$ removal efficiency for the filters was investigated. As the porosity and the reaction temperature increased, $SO_2$ removal efficiency also increased. Especially, unlike the variation of entrance concentration, the entrance flow rate had great influence on the removal efficiency. In case of the filters with an equal porosity, the hydrated lime filter had superior removal efficiency compared to the limestone filter. From these results, it was shown that the high conversion ratio to CaO from the hydrated lime filter was a result of facilitated formation of $CaSO_4$ by $SO_2$.

  • In this studies, SCR reaction activity and SO2 durability enhancement study on manufacturing conditions of the V/TiO2 catalyst was carried out for the removal of nitrogen oxides generated in the combustion furnace. The catalysts are characterized by XPS, Raman, H2-TPR and SO2-TPD. When the vanadium was contained of 2 wt%, it showed excellent SO2 durability and catalytic activity. and When the tungsten is added as a promotor, the enhancement of reducing ability at a low temperature and reduction of SO2 adsorption capacity improved the reaction activity and SO2 durability. V/W/TiO2 are prepared by the lower pH of vanadium solution, vanadium was highly dispersed on the surface and inhibited the formation of crystalline V2O5. in addition, it was confirmed that this catalyst can be used as excellent resistance to high concentration of CO in the combustion furnace.

Characteristics of Groundwater Quality in Bedrock and Tailing Dumps at the Abandoned Dalcheon Mine Area (달천 폐광산 지역에서 광미적재지와 기반암 지하수의 수질특성 연구)

  • pH and Eh were measured at 25 points in the abandoned Dalcheon mine. And, major ion components $(Na^+,\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Cl^-,\;SO_4^{2-},\;CO_3^{2-},\;HCO_3^-)$ were analyzed through groundwater sampling at 41 points. pH and Eh were measured the highest concentration in serpentinite area. And, pH was between weak alkaline and intermediate values in study area. Groundwater in study area was dominated oxidation-reduction environment caused by reaction with carbonate rock. Because sulfur components contained in carbonate, serpentinite, arsenopyrite and pyrite was dissolved by groundwater, $SO_4^{2-}$ component was high in study area. And $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$ of cations were high. Correlation coefficients of ion components in tailing dumps were 0.95 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$, 0.86 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$, 0.85 between $Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$. Correlation coefficients of ion components in bedrock were 0.86 between $Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$, 0.68 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$. Concentration range of $Ca^{2+}$ in tailing dumps was $6.85{\sim}323.58mg/L,\;and\;3.18{\sim}207.20mg/L$ in bedrock. Concentration range of $SO_4^{2-}$ in tailing dumps was $21.54{\sim}1673.17mg/L,\;and\;2.04{\sim}1024.64mg/L$ in bedrock. By the result of Piper diagram analysis with aquifer material, groundwater in tailing dumps was $Ca-SO_4$ type. Groundwater quality types with bedrock material were Mg-$SO_4$ and Mg-$HCO_3$ types in serpentinite area, Ca-$HCO_3$ type in carbonate area, Na-K and $CO_3+HCO_3$ types in hornfels, respectively. As a result of this study, groundwater in tailing dumps were dissolved $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$ components with high concentration. Also, these ion components were transported into bedrock aquifer.

  • In this study, alkanolamine was used to achieve high absorption rates for $CO_2$ as suggested at several literatures. The absorption rates of aqueous AMP and MEA solutions with $CO_2$, $SO_2$, $NO_2$ were measured using a stirredcell reactor. The reaction rate constants were determined from the measured absorption rates. The performances were evaluated under various operating conditions. As a result, the reactions with $SO_2$, $NO_2$ into aqueous AMP and MEA solutions were classified as an instantaneous reaction respectively. The absorption rates increased with increase of the reaction temperature and the concentration of absorbents. The simultaneous absorption rate of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$ into 3, 5, 10 wt.% MEA at various pressure of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$, was more increased 14~20% than AMP solution. We investigated the effect of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ on the simultaneous absorption of $CO_2/SO_2/NO_2$ from a flue gas. The performances were evaluated under various operating conditions in order to investigate the absorption characteristic.

  • In order to examine $SO_2$ injury to apple shoots, cutting shoots of five cultivars were exposed to 3 ppm $SO_2$ in vase life conditions. 1. The most sensitive cultivar to $SO_2$ was 'Rall's Genet', and 'Starking' was most tolerant among cultivars tested. 2. Ethylene production of shoots showed peak after 8 hours exposure, when visible injury was not appeared, and was decreased with increase in exposure time. 'Rall's Genet' showed slower decrease in ethylene production than other cultivars. 3. Chlorophyll a, b and a/b ratio were decreased in all cultivars after 40-hr exposures to 3 ppm $SO_2$ and greatly decreased in 'Rall's Genet' compared to other cultivars.

  • In this study a comparative investigation for the effect of $K_2SO_4$ and $CaSO_4$ on the decomposition of $C_3S$ was made. When pure $C_3S$ which was synthesized in the laboratory was mixed with $K_2SO_4$ and oxides such as MgO $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ and then reburned at the temperature range between 135$0^{\circ}C$ and 145$0^{\circ}C$ no decompo-sition occurred, But when $CaSO_4$ and $Fe_2O_3$ were added to $C_3S$ and then reburned at below 130$0^{\circ}C$ $C_3S$ was partly decomposed to $C_2S$and CaO composing $2C_2S$.$CaSO_4$ When $CaSO_4$ and $Al_2O_3$were added $C_3S$ was entirely decomposed to $C_2S$ and CaO at 1300~140$0^{\circ}C$ but it was not decomposed at 145$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to investigate $SO_2$ removal, PEI hollow fiber membranes were produced by a dry-wet phase inversion method. The membrane support layer on surface was coated with PEBAX1657$^{(R)}$ and PEG blending materials. Modules were prepared for the single gas permeation characteristics of composite membrane according to temperature and pressure. As a result, $SO_2$ permeance and $SO_2/N_2$ selectivity were 220~1220 GPU and 100~506 through operating condition, respectively. Moreover, $SO_2/CO_2/N_2$ mixture gas was used to compare the performance of separation properties according to temperature, pressure and retentate flow rate difference. $SO_2$ removal efficiency was increased with pressure and temperature.

  • The Sulfur-Iodine thermochemical hydrogen production process (SI process) consists of the Bunsen reaction section, the $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section, and the HI decomposition section. The $HI_x$ solution ($I_2-HI-H_2O$) could be recycled to Bunsen reaction section from the HI decomposition section in the operation of the integrated SI process. The phase separation characteristic of the Bunsen reaction using the $HI_x$ solution was similar to that of $I_2-H_2O-SO_2$ system. On the other hands, the amount of produced $H_2SO_4$ phase was small. To investigate the effects of $SO_2$ solubility on Bunsen reaction, the continuous Bunsen reaction was performed at variation of the amounts of $SO_2$ gas. Also, it was carried out to make sure of the effects of partial pressure of $SO_2$ in the condition of 3bar of $SO_2-O_2$ atmosphere. As the results, the characteristic of Bunsen reaction was improved with increasing the amounts and solubility of $SO_2$ gas. The concentration of Bunsen products was changed by reverse Bunsen reaction and evaporation of HI after 12 h.

  • Soil samples were collected from the paddy soils growing two crops of rice and garlic in Kyung-pook province. To obtain the basic information on the application of S-fertilizer in the garlic field, the adsorption and release amount of $SO_4{^{-2}}$ in subsoil samples were determined. The ranges of $SO_4{^{-2}}$ contents in surface and sub-soil were 59-117 and 34-102 ppm, respectively. The amount of $SO_4{^{-2}}$ adsorbed by soil samples was found to be more at lower pH and higher concentration of $SO_4{^{-2}}$. The $SO_4{^{-2}}$ adsorption constants in Freundlich equation tended to be higher at lower pH. It is apparent that most of $SO_4{^{-2}}$ was released in the first extraction. However, the lower the pH of extracted solution, the more the $SO_4{^{-2}}$ contents was released by distilled water.

Effect of Uniconazole Treatment on Plant Tolerance to $SO_2$ Injury and Enzymatic Activity and Platanus Occidentalis (Uniconazole 처리가 양버즘나무의 $SO_2$ 내성증대 및 효소의 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the phytoprotective effects of uniconazole on $SO_2$ injury in P. occidentalis. The detoxification role of free radical scavengers such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) was also examined under the conditions of combined treatment with uniconazole and diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC). Uniconazole drenching significantly reduced the occurrence of visible injuries. Though shoot length, leaf area, and T/R rate were greatly decreased by uniconazole application, the tolerance to $SO_2$ was enhanced through increased chlorophyll content and activities of SOD and POD. Spray of DDTC decreased the activity of SOD and POD resulting in the increase of visible injury. Plant tolerance to $SO_2$ induced by uniconazole application was reduced by the additional application of DDTC. These results indicate that plant tolerance to $SO_2$ induced by uniconazole is associated with the reduction of vegetative growth as well as the increase in free radical scavengers such as SOD and POD.
