Characteristics of Smoke Emissions from Light Duty Diesel Vehicles Using Light Extinction Smoke Measurement Method under free Acceleration Test Mode (광투과식 매연 측정법을 이용한 소형 디젤 차량의 무부하 급가속 조건에서의 매연 배출 특성)

  • Characteristics of smoke emission in light duty diesel vehicles was investigated according to the year of production, engine displacement volume, and mileage. The smoke emission was measured using light extinction smoke measurement method under free acceleration test mode. Total number of the tested vehicles was 180. The year of production of the tested vehicles distributed from 2002 to 2007. The displacement volumes of the tested vehicles were categorized as 2-liter, 2.5-liter, 2.7-liter, and 3-liter. The mileage of the tested vehicles distributed from 20,000 km to 400,000 km. The more recent in the year of production of the tested vehicles did not show clearly lower in smoke emissions. Smoke emission showed different values according to driver's pedal pushing pattern. Also, smoke emission peak for each free acceleration test initially increased and reach a maximum of the peak values. Afterwards, the smoke peak gradually decreased as number of test increased. A new guide line was proposed to determine the smoke value from the light duty diesel vehicles based on smoke emission peak patterns which were obtained with several repeated free acceleration tests.

  • Most fire victims succumb to smoke inhalation, and fire smoke toxicity from interior materials is increasing with increased use of plastics. Large amounts of hazardous effects of smoke are related to deposition of smoke particles in respiratory tracts, and deposition characteristics are influenced by size distribution of particles. Thus, it is essential to know the size distribution of smoke particles from plastics for hazard analysis of fire smoke. In a recent study, it has been shown that size distributions of smoke particles from PP are different from wood in many aspects. In order to know whether other plastics show the same characteristics as PP, size distributions of smoke particles from four plastic materials (LDPE, PA66, PMMA, and PVC) were measured in real time under each fire type with various temperature and oxygen supply. In this study, smoke particles from different plastics were generated uniformly by using steady-state tube furnace method provided in ISO/TS 19700. Their size distributions were measured by using an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI). Results of measurements showed that size distributions of smoke particles from these four plastic materials were similar to those from PP in many aspects. However, they were distinctively different from those of wood.

A Study on Evaluating a Representative Smoke Value from an Inspection Vehicle Using Integration Method over a Cycle of Free-Acceleration Test Mode (무부하 급가속 측정 사이클로 운전되는 검사 대상 디젤 차량으로부터 배출되는 매연값 적분에 의한 차량 매연 대표값 특성 연구)

  • Smoke emissions from light duty diesel vehicles were measured using light extinction method with the free acceleration test mode. The smoke emissions for each measurement cycle of the free acceleration method showed large variations according to driver's pedal pushing pattern. The smoke values for each measurement cycle initially increased and reach a peak value. Integration of the smoke emissions with time for each measurement cycle was performed to get a representative smoke value which was obtained by averaging the integrated results. Two kinds of integration time range were used. One is range over the whole measurement cycle of the free acceleration method. The other is only the acceleration range in the measurement cycle. Overall, variation of the representative smoke values obtained by the integration method was reduced comparing to the traditional representative smoke value which was obtained from a peak smoke value over the measurement cycle. Ten vehicles of the same model with 2.5 liter diesel engines, and seven vehicles of the same model with 2.7 liter diesel engines, were tested using the free acceleration test method.

Measurement of the Device Properties of a Ionization Smoke Detector to Improve Predictive Performance of the Fire Modeling (화재모델링 예측성능 개선을 위한 이온화식 연기감지기의 장치물성 측정)

  • The high prediction performance of fire detector models is essentially needed to assure the reliability of fire and evacuation modeling in the process of PBD (Performance Based fire safety Design). The main objective of the present study is to measure input information in order to predict the accurate activation time of smoke detector into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) fire model such as FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). To end this, FDE (Fire Detector Evaluator) which can measure the device properties of detector was developed, and the input information of Heskestad and Cleary's models was measured for a ionization smoke detector. In addition, the activation times of smoke detectors predicted using default values into FDS and measured values in the present study were systematically compared. As a result, the device properties of smoke detector examined in the present study showed a significant difference compared to the default values used into FDS, which resulted in the considerable difference of up to 15 minutes or more in terms of the activation time of smoke detector. The database (DB) on device properties of various smoke and heat detectors will be built to improve the reliability of PBD in future studies.

Smoke Control Experiment of a Very Deep Underground Station Where Platform Screens Doors are Installed - Analysis on Smoke Control Performance by Fans equipped in Tunnel (스크린도어가 설치된 대심도 지하역사의 제연 실험 - 터널 송풍기에 의한 제연의 효과 분석)

  • In this paper, the behavior of the fire smoke due to the operation of the ventilation systems when the fire occurred in the underground station (6 basement floors) and the tunnel at the great depth was measured. Fire smoke was generated by using a smoke generator which realized heat buoyancy effect by using hot air blower. The two locations of the fire were selected on the platform and on the platform of the tunnel located outside the screen door. A ventilation mode is generally used in which smoke is exhausted through a vent hole provided in a platform when a platform fire occurs. The tests were performed by operating the exhaust through the ventilation holes of the tunnel part located at both ends of the platform. The smoke density and the wind speed/velocity were measured at various positions, and the videos were taken to analyze the movement and smoke of the smoke. In both cases for fire inside the platform and in the railway tunnel, due to the ventilation mode operation of the fan for the platform and the exhaust of the fans in the tunnel smoke were well exhausted and the smoke propagation to the area near the smoke zone was suppressed. The smoke-control mode, which is applied to both fans for the platform and fans for in the tunnel at both ends of the platform, can provide a safer evacuation environment to the passengers from the fire smoke when the platform fire or fire train stops.

  • In this paper, the smoke behavior in an underground station on operation of the fans in the ventiliation of the station was measured by the experimental method when the fire occurred in the underground station platform where the platfrom screen door was installed. The ventilation characteristics were compared when the ventilation system was operated and when the ventilation system was not operated when a fire occurred at the platform where the clean door was closed. To simulate the fire smoke, the smoke generated from the smoke generator was heated using a hot air fan. The transmittance was measured using a smoke density meter to quantitatively measure fire smoke. If the screen door is closed and the ventilation system of the underground station does not work, it is confirmed that if a fire occurs in the platform, smoke accumulates inside the platform, evacuating passengers is very difficult and can lead to a very dangerous situation. On the other hand, under the condition that the ventilation facility of the subway station is operated, the smoke evacuates to the outside through the ventilation facility of the underground station, and airflow is formed in the direction from the waiting room to the waiting area, so that the passenger located on the platform can safely evacuate toward the concourse. In the following paper, we will discuss the concurrent effect of tunnel ventilation through tunnel vent near the platform.

The Performance Evaluation of Natural Smoke Ventilators Due to Stack Effect and Wind Velocities in High-rise Buildings (고층건물에서 연돌효과 및 외기풍속에 따른 배연창의 배연성능 평가)

  • Natural smoke ventilator is one of domestic prescriptive methods to be used to exhaust smoke in case of fire in a high-rise buildings. The goal of this study is to evaluate the stack effect and the smoke exhaust performance in high-rise buildings with the opening of natural smoke ventilators using computer modeling technology, thus to estimate its effectiveness as a tool of smoke exhaust. For this purpose, the pressure differential in a domestic high-rise building with natural smoke ventilators was experimentally measured to analyze the stack effect with the closure or the opening of natural smoke ventilators and to calculate compensated air leakage of the building. Computer modeling based on experimentally measured data was carried out to estimate effectiveness of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings using CONTAMW network program.

Synthesis of Alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-Phosphonic Acid Derivatives (알킬렌디아미노알킬-비스-포스폰산 유도체의 합성)

  • Four kinds of new alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acid derivatives with alkylenediaminoalkyl functional groups in the molecule were synthesized and their smoke density(Ds) were tested. These alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acid derivatives were prepared in yields(76-97.3%) by one step reaction of the phosphorus acid with amine and aldehyde. Smoke density was measured by the method of ASTM E 662. The values of smoke density were obtained from 234.7 to 437.9. The smoke density of compounds with two phosphonic acid structures were increased more than that of compounds with one phosphonic acid structure. In addition, there was correlation between the smoke density and the number of nitrogen atoms in amino group attached to mono- or di-phosphonic acids group.

Synthesis of Dialklyaminoalkyl Phosphonic Acid and Bis(dialklyaminoalkyl) Phosphinic Acid Derivatives (디알킬아미노알킬 포스폰산과 비스-디알킬아미노알킬 포스핀산 유도체의 합성)

  • Six kinds of new aminoalkyl phosphonic acid or aminoalkyl phosphinic acid derivatives with mono-dialkylamino, or di-dialkylamino functional groups in the molecule were synthesized and their smoke densities were tested. The aminoalkyl phposphonic acid or aminoalkyl phosphinic acid derivatives were synthesized with quantitative yields of 90~98.6% by one step reaction of the phosphorus acid or hypo phosphorous acid with amine and aldehyde. The smoke density was measured by the ASTM E 662 method. Values of the smoke density were obtained from 224.5 to 256.6. The smoke density of the compounds with two aminoalkyl structures decreased more than that of compounds with one aminoalkyl structure. In addition, there was no correlation between the smoke density and the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group attached to the amino group.

Effect of Positive Pressure Ventilator Tilting Angle on the Flame Suppression and Smoke Density (Positive Pressure Ventilator 경사각 변화에 의한 화염억제 효율과 연기농도 변화)

  • The experiment applied Positive Pressure Ventilation to rapidly exhaust heat and smoke inside the construction in the fire was done. Changes of heat discharge and smoke density were measured, with the various blowing condition like a fan tilting angle to find the effect of the parameter. Experimental apparatus were with PPV and water mist system for better efficiency, and investigate the effect of heat discharge and smoke removal. In the experiment, flame temperature has decreased when PPV was applied. Smoke density, generated from fire also decreased dramatically and the efficiency showed the highest rate at $0^{\circ}$ tilting angle. In addition, combination of PPV and water mist system highly improved the efficiency of evacuation on heat and smoke density, clearly was influenced by the tilting angle.
