Recently, many actions are taking to accelerate progress toward social consensus and implementation of Smart Grid. Smart Grid refers to a evolution of the electricity supply infrastructure that monitors, protects, and intelligently optimize the operation of the interconnected elements including various type of generators, power grid, building/home automation system and end-use consumers. The most distinguished element will be Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that will be installed to every end-use consumer's home or building and optimize the energy consumption of the end-use consumer. The key function of AMI is energy management capability that coordinates and optimally controls the various loads according to the operating condition and environments. In this study, we figure out the basic function of AMI in Smart Energy House that can be defined as a model house implementing in Smart Grid. This paper proposes the energy management algorithm that will be implemented in AMI at Smart Energy House. The paper also show how energy saving in Smart Energy House can be achieved applying the proposed algorithm to an actual house model that has mainly lighting, air-conditioning, TV loads.
Although the government mandated classroom use of smart technology, there exist obstacles to adapting smart technology as a means of educational tools in class. This study aims to explore the preconditions for integrating smart technology and early childhood education. To meet this end, this study investigates preschool teachers' perceptions about the possible benefits or negative impacts of using smart media on child education. Results show that teachers have negative rather than positive perceptions and attitudes toward preschoolers' use of smart media, which implies that rendering teachers have positive impression on smart education is most important for fostering smart education.

Smart devices refer to various devices and control equipment such as health care devices, imaging devices, motor devices and wearable devices that use wireless network communication (e.g., Wi-fi, Bluetooth, LTE). Commercial services using such devices are found in a wide range of fields, including home networks, health care and medical services, entertainment and toys. Studies on smart devices have also been actively undertaken by academia and industry alike, as the penetration rate of smartphones grew and the technological progress made with the fourth industrial revolution bring about great convenience for users. While services offered through smart devices come with convenience, there is also various security threats that can lead to financial loss or even a loss of life in the case of terrorist attacks. As attacks that are committed through smart devices tend to pick up where attacks based on wireless internet left off, more research is needed on related security topics. As such, this paper seeks to design an access control method for reinforced security for smart devices. After registering and authenticating the smart device from the user's smart phone and service provider, a safe communication protocol is designed. Then to secure the integrity and confidentiality of the communication data, a management process such as for device renewal or cancellation is designed. Safety and security of the existing systems against attacks are also evaluated. In doing so, an improved efficiency by approximately 44% compared to the encryption processing speed of the existing system was verified.

With the discovery in plants of the proteinaceous forisome crystalloid (Knoblauch, et al. 2003), a novel, non-living, ATP-independent biological material became available to the designer of smart materials for advanced actuating and sensing. The in vitro studies of Knoblauch, et al. show that forisomes (2-4 micron wide and 10-40 micron long) can be repeatedly stimulated to contract and expand anisotropically by shifting either the ambient pH or the ambient calcium ion concentration. Because of their unique abilities to develop and reverse strains greater than 20% in time periods less than one second, forisomes have the potential to outperform current smart materials as advanced, biomimetic, multi-functional, smart sensors or actuators. Probing forisome material properties is an immediate need to lay the foundation for synthesizing forisomebased smart materials for health monitoring of structural integrity in civil infrastructure and for aerospace hardware. Microfluidics is a growing, vibrant technology with increasingly diverse applications. Here, we use microfluidics to study the surface interaction between forisome and substrate and the conformational dynamics of forisomes within a confined geometry to lay the foundation for forisome-based smart materials synthesis in controlled and repeatable environment.

In this paper, a structural design method of a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) for a retractable-roof spatial structure under earthquake excitation was proposed. For this purpose, a retractable-roof spatial structure was simplified to a single degree of freedom (SDOF) model. Dynamic characteristics of a retractable-roof spatial structure is changed based on opened or closed roof condition. This condition was considered in the numerical simulation. A magnetorheological (MR) damper was used to compose a smart TMD and a displacement based ground-hook control algorithm was used to control the smart TMD. The control effectiveness of a smart TMD under harmonic and earthquake excitation were evaluated in comparison with a conventional passive TMD. The vibration control robustness of a smart TMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of natural period of a simplified structure. Dynamic responses of a smart TMD and passive TMD under resonant harmonic excitation and earthquake load were compared by varying mass ratio of TMD to total mass of the simplified structure. The design procedure proposed in this study is expected to be used for preliminary design of a smart TMD for a retractable-roof spatial structure.

The smart grid, a new open platform, is a core application for facilitating a creative economy in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT). Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the components of the smart grid and a two-way communications infrastructure between the main utility operator and customer. The smart meter records consumption of electrical energy and communicates that information back to the utility for monitoring and billing. This paper investigates the impact of a cybersecurity attack on the smart meter. We analyze the cost to the smart grid in the case of a smart meter attack by authorized users based on a high risk scenario from NESCOR. Our findings could be used by policy makers and utility operators to create investment decision-making models for smart grid security.
The aim of this study was to examine how children's self control, mother's addiction to smart devices and parenting behavior influence the way young children used smart devices. Participants were made up of 166 preschoolers and their mothers. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. The results were as follows: First, children in their early childhood years used smart devices once or twice a week, for ten to thirty minutes, mainly during weekends. Children in their early childhood stage started to use smart devices before reaching the age of 3, and accessed them through their parents, usually along with their siblings. Parents allowed their children to use smart devices for fun and entertainment, with only 66.3% of them setting rules. Second, the mother's tendency to be immersed in smart devices, overprotection and permission were positively correlated to young children's overusage of smart devices, whereas geniality, encouragement, setting limits, and children's self control were negatively correlated. The study also found that the mother's tendency of being immersed in smart devices was the most influential factor for their children's overusage of smart devices. The value of this study lies in providing practical suggestions for children's smart device usage and parental education programs.

A fabrication of smart windows with controllable visible light transmittance in three steps by using λ/2 retardation films based on a reactive mesogen (RM) material and polarizing films is demonstrated. The phase retardation films with a Δn·d value of λ/2 (λ: wavelength) convert the direction of a traveling light to the optical axis of the film symmetrically. In this work, the retardation characteristics according to the RM thickness were evaluated and henceλ/2 phase retardation film can be fabricated. The phase retardation film with Δn·d of 276.1 nm, which is close to λ/2 (=275 nm @550 nm), was fabricated. The light transmittance of a smart window with the structure of (polarizing film)/(glass)/(alignment layer)/(λ/2 retardation film) was measured in the transmission mode, half mode and blocking mode. The evaluation results show that the transmittance of the smart window can be controlled in three steps with 35.8%, 27.8%, and 18.2% at each mode, respectively. In addition, by fabricating a smart window with a size of 15×200 mm2, the feasibility of use in various fields such as buildings and automobiles was verified.
