  • Performance indicators such as output SNR, SIR, SINR for rectangular smart antennas in CDMA basestations have been derived. Simulations have been carried out to find the rectangular smart antenna performance while varying the input SNR, number of antenna elements, and the interferers' spatial distributions. Simplified Conjugate Gradient Method was chosen as the underlying beam forming algorithm. It has been shown that the performance of a rectangular smart antenna is similar to that of the linear one having the same number of elements when the interferers are randomly distributed over the whole azimuth angle range.

  • In this work, we present a novel genetic approach to solve the problem of combining power control and data rate transmission adjustment for the performance enhancement of the next generation CDMA system. We obtained the optimal solution of multi rate and power control problem by compromising slightly on SIR limit values. The proposed algorithm was able to handle many more users with comparable or faster convergent service. While this paper considered two kinds of fitness function such as maximizing the total transmission data rate and maximizing the acceptable mobiles of CDMA cellular network, the evaluation function combining these two cases or others can be also easily implemented. The simulation results showed the effectiveness and validity of our approach.

  • This paper presents the blind multiuser detector using the constant modulus algorithm(CMA) to solve the near-far problem in DS-CDMA systems. The convergence property of the detector is compared with the conventional MOE(minimum output energy) detector by means of SIR(signal-to-interference ratio). The MOE detector needs both the spreading code of the users and the timing information, while proposed methods needs only information about the spreading code of users Simulation results show that the CMA-based detector is superior to the conventional blind MOE multiuser detector. For this, the BER performance was tested using different values of SNR and near-far ratio. The SIR is also investigated for different number of users in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. We have observed that the proposed blind multiuser detector performs better than conventional MOE multiuser detector.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the epidemic model to explain the process of disease spread. The process of disease spread can be classified into two types: deterministic process and stochastic process. Most studies supposed that the process follows the deterministic process and established the model using the ordinary differential equation. In this article, we try to build the disease spread prediction model based on the SIR (Suspectible - Infectious - Recovered) model. we first estimated the model parameters using least squared method and applied to a deterministic model using ordinary differential equation. we also applied to a stochastic model based on Gillespie algorithm. The methods introduced in this paper are applied to the data on the number of cases of malaria every week from January 2001 to March 2003, released by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a result, we conclude that our model explains well the process of disease spread.

  • In this paper, we propose a new speech separation algorithm to extract and enhance the target speech signals from mixed speech signals by utilizing both magnitude and phase information. Since the previous statistical modeling algorithms assume that the log power spectrum values of the mixed speech signals are independent in the temporal and frequency domain, discontinuities occur in the resultant separated speech signals. To reduce the discontinuities, we apply a smoothing filter in the time-frequency domain. To further improve speech separation performance, we propose a statistical model based on both magnitude and phase information of speech signals. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improve signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) by 1.5 dB compared with the previous magnitude-only algorithms.

  • This paper introduces a variable step-size adaptive algorithm for blind source separation. From the frequency characteristics of mixed input signals, we need to adjust the convergence speed regularly in each frequency bin. This algorithm varies a step-size according to the magnitude of input at each frequency bin. This guarantee of the regular convergence in each frequency bin would become more efficient in separation performances than conventional fixed step-size FDICA. Computer simulation results show the improvement of about 5 dB in signal to interference ratio (SIR) and the better separation quality.

  • Sea surface wind field was retrieved from high-resolution SIR-C SAR data by using CMOD algorithms off the east coast of Korea. In order to extract wind direction information from SAR data, a two-dimensional spectral analysis method was applied to the normalized radar cross section of the image. An $180^{\circ}$-ambiguity problem in the determination of wind direction was solved by selecting a direction nearest to the wind vector of the ECMWF reanalysis data. Comparison of the wind retrieval patterns with the ECMWF and NCEP/NCAR dataset showed RMS errors in the range of 1.30 to $1.72\;ms^{-1}$. In contrast, comparison of wind directions revealed large errors of greater than $60^{\circ}$, which is enormously higher than the permitted limit of about $20^{\circ}$ for satellite scatterometer winds. Compared with wind speed results from different algorithms, wind vectors based on commonly-used CMOD4 algorithm showed good agreement with those derived by other algorithms such as CMOD_IFR2 and CMOD5, particularly at medium winds from 4 to $8\;ms^{-1}$. However, apparent discrepancy appeared at low winds (< $4\;ms^{-1}$). This study also addressed an importance of accurate wind direction data to improve the accuracy of wind speed retrieval and discussed potential causes of wind retrieval errors from SAR data.

  • Variable selection algorithm for Sliced Inverse Regression using penalty function is proposed. We noted SIR models can be expressed as generalized eigenvalue decompositions and incorporated penalty functions on them. We found from small simulation that the HARD penalty function seems to be the best in preserving original directions compared with other well-known penalty functions. Also it turned out to be effective in forcing coefficient estimates zero for irrelevant predictors in regression analysis. Results from illustrative examples of simulated and real data sets will be provided.

  • We investigate the D2D utility maximization in the cellular system. We focus on the non cooperative game theoretic approach to maximize the individual utility. Cellular system's perspective, interference from the D2D links must be limited to protect the cellular users. To accommodate this interference issue, utility function is first defined to control the individual D2D user's transmit power. More specifically, utility function includes the pricing which limits the individual D2D user's transmit power. Then, non cooperative power game is formulated to maximize the individual utility. Distributed algorithm is proposed to maximize the individual utility, while limiting the interference. Convergence of the proposed distributed algorithm is verified through computer simulation. Also the effect of pricing factor to SIR and interference is provided to show the performance of the proposed distributed algorithm.
