  • Five major naturally populated habitats around the Mt. Daeduk, Gangwon province for wild Chuiangne (Pyrus ussuriensis var. acidula) are mostly located on the southeast side of the mountains at 1,216-1,306m in altitude at sea level and are in very good sunney areas. The total of 96 taxa dividing into 40 families, 79 genera 84 species and 12 varieties have in these areas. Most of these plants are heliophytes, which love sunshine, Compositaes such as Artemisia stolonifera, Synurus deltoides, or Rosaceaes like Potentilla fragarioides var. major are also shown. These areas have been unknown destroyed, so it is possibly thought the second transition has been progressed. The index of species diversity of plant groups in these areas is 4.715-5.270 based on the Shannon-Wiener's method. The wild Chuiangne with 34.15%, which are 5-10㎝ DBH, have been found in habitats. The vegetation around the habitats must be managed by the man in order to keep sound growth of the wild Chuiangne.

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data for conservation management of Pinus densiflora forest and to predict ecological succession tendency by analyzing plant community structure and change of Pinus densiflora community structure for twenty two years in Yongmun-sa (Temple) Valley, Yangpyeong-gun. According to the analysis of actual vegetation, Pinus densiflora community accounted for 51.3% of the total vegetation in the area. Nineteen plots were classified into four community types. The Shannon's species diversity index (H') showed from 0.5110 to 1.3101. There were distributed Pinus densiflora in age from 48 to 89, Quercus serrata in age from 31 to 63, Carpinus laxiflora in age from 26 to 61. According to the analysis of the change for twenty-two years, Pinus densiflora community was maintained or decreased and competitive species (Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, Carpinus cordata) were increased. The ecological succession tendency was predicted Pinus densiflora community develop into Quercus serrata, lastly into Carpinus laxiflora and Carpinus cordata.

  • To investigate a quantitative evaluation of the actinobacteria, we have collected samples from various kinds of bamboo forest soil. Each different layers contained $2.7{\times}10^6-2.7{\times}10^8$ CFU/g of actinobacteria which was the highest in litter layers of Sasa boreali forest soil. We obtained 330 actinobacteria from different layers of bamboo forest soil; litter (100 strains), humus (70 strains), and rhizosphere soil (160 strains). Based on the colony morphology (aerial mycelium, substrate mycelium, and soluble pigment), isolates were divided into thirty-six groups and we selected 50 representative isolates. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed Streptomyces was major actinobacteria (94%) and they were categorized as cluster I (2 strains), II (35 strains), III (6 strains), and IV (7 strains), respectively. The diversity index of 50 Streptomyces collected from the bamboo forest soil was calculated with the Shannon-Wiener method. Bamboo litter showed higher diversity index level of 3.33 than that of humus and rhizosphere soil. Also, antibiotic activities of our isolates were investigated against Botrytis cinerea, Xanthomonas campestris, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria, and Bacillus cereus and found in 74, 16, 25, and 24 strains, respectively.

  • The characterization of tree species and forest stand conditions is useful in the planning of activities aimed to conserve biodiversity. The main objective of this study was to describe tree species diversity, species composition and stand structure of tropical deciduous forests distributed in three regions in Myanmar. Forest inventory was conducted in the Oktwin teak bearing forest, the Letpanpin community forest and Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park. According to the Jackknife estimator of species richness, 85 species (${\pm}18.16$), 70 species (${\pm}5.88$) and 186 species (${\pm}17.10$) belonging to 31 families were found in the Oktwin teak bearing forest, 33 families in Letpanpin community forest and 53 families in Alaungdaw Kathapa national park, respectively. Shannon's diversity indices were significantly different among the forests (p<0.05). It ranged from 3.36 to 4.36. Mean tree density (n/ha) of the Oktwin teak bearing forest, Letpanpin community forest and Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park were 488 (${\pm}18.6$), 535 (${\pm}15.6$) and 412 (${\pm}14.1$), while basal areas per hectare were $46.96m^2({\pm}3.23),\;49.01m^2({\pm}5.08)\;and\;60.03m^2({\pm}3.88)$, respectively. At the family level, Verbenaceae, Myrtaceae and Combretaceae occupied the highest importance value index, while at the species level it was Tectona grandis, Lagerstoremia speciosa and Xylia xylocarpa.

  • Background: Ecologists have achieved much progress in the study of mechanisms that maintain species coexistence and diversity. In this paper, we reviewed a wide range of past research related to these topics, focusing on five theoretical bodies: (1) coexistence by niche differentiation, (2) coexistence without niche differentiation, (3) coexistence along environmental stress gradients, (4) coexistence under non-equilibrium versus equilibrium conditions, and (5) modern perspectives. Results: From the review, we identified that there are few models that can be generally and confidently applicable to different ecological systems. This problem arises mainly because most theories have not been substantiated by enough empirical research based on field data to test various coexistence hypotheses at different spatial scales. We also found that little is still known about the mechanisms of species coexistence under harsh environmental conditions. This is because most previous models treat disturbance as a key factor shaping community structure, but they do not explicitly deal with stressful systems with non-lethal conditions. We evaluated the mainstream ideas of niche differentiation and stochasticity for the coexistence of plant species across salt marsh creeks in southwestern Denmark. The results showed that diversity indices, such as Shannon-Wiener diversity, richness, and evenness, decreased with increasing surface elevation and increased with increasing niche overlap and niche breadth. The two niche parameters linearly decreased with increasing elevation. These findings imply a substantial influence of an equalizing mechanism that reduces differences in relative fitness among species in the highly stressful environments of the marsh. We propose that species evenness increases under very harsh conditions if the associated stress is not lethal. Finally, we present a conceptual model of patterns related to the level of environmental stress and niche characteristics along a microhabitat gradient (i.e., surface elevation). Conclusions: The ecology of stressful systems with non-lethal conditions will be increasingly important as ongoing global-scale climate change extends the period of chronic stresses that are not necessarily fatal to inhabiting plants. We recommend that more ecologists continue this line of research.

  • The present study compared the microbial diversity and activity during the application of various bioremediation processes to crude oil-contaminated soil. Five different treatments, including natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (BS), biosurfactant addition (BE), bioaugmentation (BA), and a combined treatment (CT) of biostimulation, biosurfactant addition, and bioaugmentation, were used to analyze the degradation rate and microbial communities. After 120 days, the level of remaining hydrocarbons after all the treatments was similar, however, the highest rate (k) of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation was observed with the CT treatment (P<0.05). The total bacterial counts increased during the first 2 weeks with all the treatments, and then remained stable. The bacterial communities and alkane monooxygenase gene fragment, alkB, were compared by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The DGGE analyses of the BA and CT treatments, which included Nocardia sp. H17-1, revealed a simple dominant population structure, compared with the other treatments. The Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H') and Simpson dominance index (D), calculated from the DGGE profiles using 16S rDNA, showed considerable qualitative differences in the community structure before and after the bioremediation treatment as well as between treatment conditions.

  • The effect of the relative abundances of planktonic foraminifera juveniles on the climatic and oceanographic history interpretations is documented for the first time (as far as we know) by use of the year-long time-series sediment trap samples. Statistical correlation analysis suggests that many climatic and oceanographic variables such as sinking flux (total number) of planktonic foraminifera, relative abundance of some climatic indicator species G. bulloides and N. dutertrei, temperature, and salinity do not show any significant correlations with the relative abundance of planktonic foraminifera juveniles. However, planktonic foraminifera juveniles show moderate correlations with species diversity indices (species richness, Shannon-Wiener index, and Equitability). These indicate that the juveniles do not affect the relative abundances(%) of species compositions but affect the species diversity indices. Based on this one-year trap result, special care is required when we use species diversity indices for the interpretations of paleoceanography when the juveniles are excluded from total planktonic foraminiferal countings.

  • Objective: This study investigated the changes in bacterial communities within decomposing swine microcosms, comparing soil with or without intact microbial communities, and under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Methods: The experimental microcosms consisted of four conditions: UA, unsterilized soil-aerobic condition; SA, sterilized soil-aerobic condition; UAn, unsterilized soil-anaerobic condition; and San, sterilized soil-anaerobic condition. The microcosms were prepared by mixing 112.5 g of soil and 37.5 g of ground carcass, which were then placed in sterile containers. The carcass-soil mixture was sampled at day 0, 5, 10, 30, and 60 of decomposition, and the bacterial communities that formed during carcass decomposition were assessed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Results: A total of 1,687 amplicon sequence variants representing 22 phyla and 805 genera were identified in the microcosms. The Chao1 and Shannon diversity indices varied in between microcosms at each period (p<0.05). Metagenomic analysis showed variation in the taxa composition across the burial microcosms during decomposition, with Firmicutes being the dominant phylum, followed by Proteobacteria. At the genus level, Bacillus and Clostridium were the main genera within Firmicutes. Functional prediction revealed that the most abundant Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes metabolic functions were carbohydrate and amino acid metabolisms. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a higher bacteria diversity in UA and UAn microcosms than in SA and SAn microcosms. In addition, the taxonomic composition of the microbial community also exhibited changes, highlighting the impact of soil sterilization and oxygen on carcass decomposition. Furthermore, this study provided insights into the microbial communities associated with decomposing swine carcasses in microcosm.
