  • A technical analysis of current scramjet and combined-cycle engine is presented. Substantial research has been pursued to characterize the operation mechanism of scramjet propulsion, especially in the areas of flame stabilization and system integration, dramatically over the years in support of both military and space access application. Major technology that had significant impact on the maturation of scramjet propulsion technology are dual combustion ramjet, dual mode ramjet, and combined cycle engine to cover a typical wide rage of flight, up to flight Mach number 10. Notable are the fundamental and practical techniques, for instance, scram propulsion itself, thermal relaxation and protection using endothermic fuel and/or CSiC composit materials, and design/manufacture of movable intake and nozzle, to realize high speed propulsion system in near future.

  • This is conceptual study of vitiated air heater(VAH), the necessary ground test facility, for characteristics studies of scramjet combustion and development of scramjet engines. The VAH is one of various types which provided hot air to an intake or a combustion chamber of scramjet and it must use suitable fuel to get hot combustion gas and more similar mixture gas(vitiated air) to real air. In the study, foreign VAHs being capable of providing very high temperature were researched, and injectors for VAH using LNG(CH4) or hydrogen were designed conceptually to develop scramjet vehicle.

  • This study is the results of the analytical research for a dual-model scramjet engine flowpath which is included inlet, isolator, combustor, and nozzle. To design a dual-mode scramjet engine and to investigate its performance, the performance analysis models and tools are required to develope for aerodynamic, thermodynamic characteristics, propulsion, and total system. Therefore, analysis models for air inlet, isolator, supersonic combustor, and nozzle of a dual-mode scramjet engine were accomplished, the performance characteristics of a dual-mode scramjet engine is investigated with using the developed analysis tools.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis of a ramjet and scramjet engine according to flight Mach numbers. The main objective of this study is to give physical understanding on the performance parameters and to provide a more unified treatment of the fundamentals of ramjet and scramjet propulsion, mainly based on analytical methods. The effects of flight Mach number, inlet characteristics, and combustion on the performance of ramjet and scramjet are analysed. The cycle analysis are conducted on both combustors with constant pressure and with constant cross-section area, on which comparisons are made. Also the optimal Mach number at the entry of the combustor is studied.

  • In this study, two-stage hypersonic scramjet vehicle was designed for the flight condition of Mach number 6. In order to launch at sea level, two stage concept was applied. The first stage of the vehicle is solid rocket-powered and is mounted under the second stage. The second stage is powered by scramjet propulsion system and gas wings. The suggested mission scenario is to deliver 0.2 ton payload to the range of 2,000 km. For the first step of conceptual design, trajectory of air vehicle was calculated by 3-DOF trajectory code. Based on the result of trajectory code, scramjet engine design and mass estimation were performed by non-equilibrium nozzle flow code and NASA's HASA model, respectively. In order to find best solution, all steps of designing process was iterated until they was reached.

  • Recent activities on the scramjet and rocket-ramjet combined-cycle engine of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) are herein presented. The scramjet engines and combined-cycle engines have been studied in the world and JAXA has also studied such the engines experimentally, numerically and conceptually. Based on the studies, 2 to 3 m long, hydrogen-fueled engine models were designed and tested at the Ramjet Engine Test Facility(RJTF) and the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel(HIEST). A scramjet engine model was tested in Mach 10 to 14 flight condition at HIEST. A 3 m long scramjet engine model was designed to reduce a dissociation energy loss in a high temperature condition. Drag reduction by a tangential injection and two ways of a transverse fuel injection were examined. Combustor model tests at three operating modes of the combined-cycle engine were conducted, demonstrating the combustor operation and producing data for the engine design at each mode. Aerodynamic engine model tests were conducted in a transonic wind tunnel, demonstrating the engine operation in the ejector-jet mode. A 3 m long combined-cycle engine model has been tested in the ejector-jet mode and the ramjet mode since March 2007. Carbon composite material was examined for application to the engines. Production of the cooling channel on a nickel alloy plate succeeded by the electro-chemical etching.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the performance parameters of dual mode(ramjet-scramjet combined) engine, inlet and combustor for wide range of flight Mach number, resulted from the analysis of its operating limitations. The transitional-critical flight Mach number from ramjet to scramjet and the performance of two types of combustors, such as constant pressure- and constant area- combustor, are conceptually evaluated.

  • Scramjet engine combustor was tested with "RAMSYS" blow down wind tunnel in Kakuda Space Center, JAXA. As a result, installation of a cavity showed larger combustion pressure than the case without a cavity. Zigzag cavity applied for the first time in this experiment, showed the largest combustion pressure and is expected to contribute to the stable and economic operation of scramjet.
