  • Diesel $NO_x$ reduction by $NH_3$-SCR in conjunction with the effective oxidation precatalyst was analytically investigated. Physicochemical processes in regard to $NH_3$-SCR $NO_x$ reduction and catalytic NO-$NO_2$ conversion are formulated with detailed descriptions on the commanding reactions. A unified model is correctly validated with experimental data in terms of extents of $NO_x$ reduction by SCR and NO-$NO_2$ conversion by DOC. The present deterministic model based on the rate expressions of Langmuir-Hinshelwood reaction scheme finds a conversion extent directly. A series of numerical experiments concomitant with parametric analysis of the $NO_x$ reduction was conducted. $NO_x$ reduction is promoted in proportion to DOC volume ar lower temperatures and an opposite holds at lower space velocity and intermediate temperatures. $NO_x$ conversion is weakly correlated to the space velocity and the DOC volume at higher exhaust temperature. In DOC-SCR system, the $NO_x$ reduction efficiency depends on the $NH_3/NO_x$ ratio.

  • A numerical simulation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NO with $NH_3$ is conducted over the $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts. The governing $NH_3$ and NO transport equations are considered by using the time-dependent FCT (Flux-Corrected Transport) algorithm. After a validating simulation for $NH_3$ step feed and shut-off experiments is analyzed, transient behavior of $NH_3$ and NO concentration in a SCR catalyst is investigated by changing such parameters as inflow $NH_3$ concentration, temperature of the catalyst, and $NH_3$/NOx ratios.

  • Thermodynamic evaluation indicates that nearly 100% conversion of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury can be attained by HCl of several tens of ppm level at the temperature window of SCR reaction. Cu-, Fe-, Mn-chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts revealed good NO removal activity at the operating temperature window of SCR process. The catalysts with high desorption temperature indicating adsorption strength of $NH_3$ revealed higher NO removal activity. The HCl fed to the reaction gases promoted the oxidation of mercury. However, the activity for the oxidation of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury by HCl was suppressed by $NH_3$ inhibiting the adsorption of HCl to catalyst surface under SCR reaction condition containing $NH_3$ for NO removal. Metal chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts showed much higher activity for mercury oxidation than $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst without metal chloride under SCR reaction condition. This is primarily attributed to the participation of chloride in metal chloride on the catalyst surface promoting the oxidation of elemental mercury.

  • Selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ by $NH_3$ ($NH_3$-SCR) over $V_2O_5/TiO_2$-based catalysts is recently reported to be an anthropogenic emitter of $N_2O$ that is a global warming gas with a global warming potential of 310. Therefore, this review will get a touch on significance of some parameters regarding $N_2O$ formation in the $deNO_xing$ reaction for fossil fuels-fired power plants applications. The $N_2O$ production in $NH_3$-SCR reaction with such catalysts occurs via side reactions between $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ in addition to $NH_3$ oxidation, and the extent of these undesired reactions depends strongly on the loadings of $V_2O_5$ as a primary active component and the promoter as a secondary one ($WO_3$ and $MoO_3$) in the SCR catalysts, the feed and operating variables such as reaction temperature, $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio, oxygen concentration, gas hourly space velocity, water content and thermal excursion, and the physical and chemical histories of the catalysts on site. Although all these parameters are associated with the $N_2O$ formation in $deNO_xing$ reaction, details of some of them have been discussed and a better way of suppressing the $N_2O$ production in commercial SCR plants has been proposed.

  • Efficient simultaneous reduction conditions for $NO_x$ and $NH_3$-slip was investigated in SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process with load variation by applying dual catalysts (SCR catalyst, $NH_3$ decomposition catalyst) system. $N_2O$ formation characteristics were analyzed to look into possible undesirable reaction pathways. In the experiments of catalyst characteristics, various operational variables were tested for the combined catalytic system, such as $NH_3/NO_x$ ratio, temperature, oxygen concentration and $H_2O$. The reaction characteristics of $NO_x$, $NH_3$ and $N_2O$ were analyzed and optimal conditions could be evaluated for the combustion facility with varied load. In terms of $NO_x/NH_3$ simultaneous reduction and $N_2O$ formation suppression, optimal condition was considered NSR 1.2 and temperature $300^{\circ}C$. At this operational condition, $NO_x$ conversion was 98%, $NH_3$ reduction efficiency was 95%, generated $N_2O$ concentration 9.5 ppm with inlet $NO_x$ concentration of 100 ppm. In $NH_3-SCR$ process with $NH_3$ decomposition catalyst, $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ can be considered to be reduced simultaneously at limited conditions. The results of this study may be utilized as basic data at facilities requiring simultaneous $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ reduction for facilities with load variation.

  • A mathematical modeling of $NO_x$ reduction in $NH_3$-SCR process is conducted. The present deterministic model solves one-dimensional conservation equations of mass and species concentrations for channel flows and the catalytic reaction. NO and NO_2$ reactions by the vanadium catalyst in the presence of $NH_3$ are calculated with the rate expressions of Langmuir-Hinshelwood scheme. The modeling was validated with extensive empirical data regarding $NO_x$ reduction efficiency. Analysis of De-$NO_x$ sensitivity conducted with regard to oxygen and water yielded highly accurate prediction over a wide range of $NO_2/NO_x$ ratios from 0 to 1 in a temperature range of $200^{\circ}C{\sim}550^{\circ}C$. The $NO_x$ reduction largely depends on $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio at temperatures lower than $300^{\circ}C$. NO reduction efficiency is significantly augmented with increasing in $NH_3$/NO ratio at higher temperatures, whereas rather insensitive to the $NH_3$/NO ratio at lower temperatures.

  • This study was carried out to develop an efficient process abating high NO concentration. A hybrid process of selective catalytic reduction(SCR) and activated carbon fiber(ACF) adsorption was newly designed and tested. Used ACF in NO adsorption was regenerated by simultaneously applying heat and vacuum. The result of ACF regeneration was for superior in the desorption condition at $140^{\circ}C$ and vacuum 600 mmHg. A commercial catalyst was used at the conditions of reaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, $NH_3/NO$ mole ratio = 1.0 for SCR process. NO evolved from ACF regeneration reactor could be removed by SCR reactor up to 98%. But high concentration of NO was exhausted from SCR reactor for one minute when the flue gas of NO 300 ppm and deserted NO from ACF regeneration were simultaneously treated by the same SCR reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to use additional small sized SCR reactor or to increase $NH_3$ concentration for a short time along with NO concentration rather than to mix flue gas with the gas evolving from ACF regeneration at fixed $NH_3$ inlet concentration. The hybrid process of SCR and ACF showed high NO removal efficiency over 80% at any time courses. Through the repeated cycles, stable DeNOx efficiency was maintained, indicating that the hybrid process would be a good countermeasure to the spotaneously high NO concentration instead of increasing the SCR capacity.

  • The technique of $NH_3$ SCR (selective catalytic reduction) assisted by plasma oxidation has been applied to a 2,000 cc diesel engine. The present combined $deNO_x$ process consists of two steps. The first step is that about 50% of emitted NO from the engine is oxidized to $NO_2$ in a plasma oxidation process. The second step is that NO and $NO_2$ are simultaneously reduced to $N_2$ in the $NH_3$ SCR process. The engine test results showed that the $deNO_x$ rates of the present combined process are higher than those of conventional SCR process by 20%. Such a high performance of the combined process is noticeable especially, when the exhaust temperature are relatively low, i.e., $170-220^{\circ}C$. To provide a feasibility of the present technique the effects of operating conditions, such as an electrical input energy, an exhaust gas temperature, an initial NO concentration, and the amount of hydrocarbon addition, were discussed.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of SCR reactor on the exhaust emissions characteristics in order to develop a urea-SCR aftertreatment system for reducing $NO_x$ emissions. The experiments are conducted by using a flue tube LPG steam boiler with the urea-SCR aftertreatment system. The urea-SCR aftertreatment system utilizes the ammonia converted from 17% aqueous urea solution injected in front of SCR catalyst as a reducing agent for reducing $NO_x$ emissions. The equivalence ratio, urea injection amount, ammonia slip and $NO_x$ conversion efficiency relative to boiler load are applied to discuss the experimental results. In this experiment, the average equivalence ratio is calculated by changing only the fuel consumption rate while the intake air amount is constantly fixed at $25,957.11cm^3/sec$. The average equivalence ratios are 1.38, 1.11, 0.81 and 0.57 when boiler loads are 100, 80, 60 and 40%. The $NO_x$ conversion efficiency is raised with increasing urea injection amount, and $NH_3$ slip is also boosted at the same time. Consequently, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency relative to boiler load should be examined in combination with urea injection amount and $NH_3$ slip. The results are calculated by 89, 85, 77 and 79% for the boiler loads of 100, 80, 60 and 40%. The appropriate amount of urea injection for the respective boiler load can be not discussed by only $NO_x$ emissions, and should be determined by considering the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency, $NH_3$ slip and reactive activation temperature simultaneously. In this study, the urea amounts of 230, 235, 233 and 231 mg/min are injected at the boiler loads of 100, 80, 60 and 40%, and the final $NH_3$ slips are measured by 8.48, 5.58, 11.97 and 11.34 ppm at the same conditions. THC emission is affected by the SCR reactor under other experimental conditions except 100% engine load, and CO emission at only 40% engine load. The rest of exhaust emissions are not affected by the SCR reactor under all experimental conditions.

  • Effects of water vapor, hydrocarbons, and CO, which are inevitably included in exhaust gases of combustion, on a combined $De-NO_{x}$ process of non-thermal plasma and $NH_{3}$ SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) have been investigated. Test results showed that fast SCR reaction enhanced $De-NO_{x}$ rate under the low temperature conditions, $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ The present test, however, showed that the role of the fast SCR reaction can be significantly suppressed by addition of hydrocarbons in a non-thermal plasma reactor. Detailed investigation verified that such suppressed role of the fast SCR reaction could be caused by the $NO_{2}/NO_{x}$ ratio modified by aldehydes produced from hydrocarbons in a non-thermal plasma reactor. In addition, the present study was confirmed that the effects of water vapor and CO were not noticeable compared with the hydrocarbon effects.
