Partially penetrated SCP method is to install sand compaction piles in a soft clay layer not penetrating to the bed layer. In this study, consolidation behaviors of soft grounds improved by both partially and fully penetrated SCP methods are presented. When the replacement ratio is low, the settlement characteristic of the ground improved by fully penetrated SCP method seems to be consistent regardless the degree of consolidation. On the other hands, the ground improved by partially penetrated SCP method appears to decrease depending on the degree of consolidation. In addition, the settlement of upper clay layer is more increasing as the penetration ratio ($H_d/H$) is decreasing. No effect of stress concentration at the lower part of the partially penetrated SCP method is developed. The ratio of stress sharing appears to be almost consistent regardless the degree of consolidation.

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests conducted to investigate the effectiveness of applying methodology of a sand compaction(SCP) and a gravel compaction pile(GCP) on soft ground. The test conditions involved relatively low replacement ratios (=10, 20, and 30%) of a pile to unit cell at 1g (gravity acceleration) level. Results revealed that GCP significantly enhanced bearing capacity, settlement reduction, and consolidation rate compared with SCP.
Several centrifuge modelling tests were performed to compare sand compaction pile (SCP) with gravel compaction pile (GCP) at the point of bearing capacity. SCP and GCP were installed as 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% of replacement ratio in cylindrical model tank (diameter = 20 cm, height = 40 cm), and the loading tests were carried out to analyze the bearing characteristics of soft clay ground reinforced by SCP and GCP. As a result of loading tests, the bearing capacities of soft grounds reinforced by SCP and GCP increase with increasing replacement ratio of pile, and a GCP reinforced ground has larger bearing capacity than that of a SCP reinforced ground. Several proposed bearing capacity equations for ground reinforced by SCP or GCP were compared with loading test results.
Mechanical behavior of composition pound improved by sand compaction pile (SCP) with low replacement area ratio could be more significantly affected by mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays than that of clay ground improved by SD or SCP with high replacement area ratio. It is essential to elucidate the mechanical interaction in the improved clay ground, in order to accurately estimate behavior in reducing settlement of the improved ground and increasing strength of clays. In this paper, through a series of model tests of composition ground improved by SCP with low replacement area ratio, each mechanical behaviors of sand piles and clays in the composition ground during consolidation was elucidated, together with stress sharing behavior between sand piles and clays.

An application frequency of vertical drainage method is increasing as an effective consolidation acceleration method. PBD method is most frequently used as a consolidation acceleration method in vertical drainage methods. PBD is economical and easy to operate but has some problems those are an environmental pollution and a decrease of a discharge capacity caused by bending of drainage materials when it is used in great depth. SCP method was frequently used because it's discharge capacity was good but now it is rarely used because of an increase of the material price because of an order imbalance. As the way to solve these problems, GCP method has been to the fore. For analyzing the effect of GCP method on the discharge capacity, three types of composite discharge capacity tests are done by using GCP, SCP and PBD respectively with the circle case, ${\phi}38{\times}h70cm$. On the contrary to this, GCP shows the worst discharge capacity for a decrease of the void ratio and the clogging phenomenon caused by increasing load. Also to figure out the clogging range of GCP, the clogging of GCP is checked in each load stage with a large case($1.0m{\times}0.5m{\times}1.1m$) which has clear acrylic front face. The diameter of GCP was 35cm and a clogging phenomenon occurred in 10% approximately. The result shows that the discharge capacity of GCP was given the lowest value for a decrease of the void ratio and the clogging phenomenon causing by increasing load. And the clogging phenomenon mostly occurred within 10% of GCP's diameter range.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on applicability of Light-weighted Foam Soils (LWFS) consisted of dredged soils for soft ground improvement. The engineering properties of LWFS were comprehensively investigated based on the previous experimental tests. And three dimensional numerical models which reflect soft ground conditions were adopted to evaluate the applicability of LWFS compared to SCP and DCM. A number of cases were analyzed using a stress-pore pressure coupled model. The results indicated that LWFS method enables to reduce more settlement, lateral flow and heaving than SCP method and enable to reduce more residual settlement than DCM method. Also it was revealed that such effect depends on the properties of LWFS such as unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, deformation modulus and Poisson's ratio.
SCP is a construction method that maximizes the effects of ground improvement by creating sand piles, which are formed by the compaction within soft ground. SCP is mainly used for consolidation and drain effects in clayey soils, and as a liquefaction countermeasure through effects such as compaction in loose sandy soils. In the design of SCP, if the sand piles with high stiffness are not taken into account, it can become a design that overly considered safety, and increased construction costs are highly likely to cause economic disadvantages. The changes in stress conditions and compaction mechanisms in the subsurface have been identified to a certain extent by study findings to date. However, the studies that considered SCP and in-situ ground as composite ground are fairly limited, and therefore, those studies have not achieved enough results to fully explain the relevant topics. In this study, the ground improved by SCP was regarded as the composite ground that consists of SCP and in-situ ground. Moreover, employing a CID test, this study examined the changes in the stress conditions of in-situ ground according to the installation of SCP through the relations between $K_0$ and SCP replacement ratio. At the same, whether the SCP installation procedure can be recreated in a laboratory was examined using a cyclic triaxial test. According to the test results, the changes in the stress conditions of the original ground occurred most largely in an initial stage of SCP installation, and after a certain time point, the vibration for SCP installation did not have a great influence on the changes in the stress conditions of the ground. Moreover, in order to recreate the behaviors of in-suit ground according to SCP in a laboratory, cyclic loading, which corresponds to casing vibration, was concluded to be essentially required.
Recently, engineering problems such as long-term settlement, differential settlement, and the resultant structural damage, have been frequently reported at construction sites. Use of Sand Compaction Piles(SCP) and Granular Compaction Piles(GCP) are good at remedying existing problems, improving bearing capacity and promoting consolidation. However, such compaction piles have the potential for clogging, which would limit their usability. Investigations into the potential for clogging in SCP, GCP, and GCP mixed with sand has not been thoroughly conducted and is the objective of this current study. Large scale direct shear tests were performed on sections of SCP, GCP, and sand mixed GCP to evaluate bearing capacity. Discrete Element Method analyses were conducted with PFC3D and Finite Element Analyses were conducted with MIDAS GTS to propose an algorithm to help reduce clogging in the granular compaction piles. Results from the large scale direct shear test and multiple simulations suggest a 70% gravel and 30% sand mixing ratio to be optimal for bearing capacity and reducing clogging.
In order to design accurately sand compaction pile (SCP) method with low replacement area ratio, it is important to understand the mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays and its mechanism during consolidation process of the composition ground. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on composition ground improved by SCP with low replacement area ratio were carried out, in order to investigate the mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic consolidation finite element method was applied, could be confirmed comparing with results of a series of model tests on consolidation behaviors of composition ground improved by SCP. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, each mechanical behavior of sand piles and clays in the composition ground during consolidation was elucidated, together with stress sharing mechanism between sand piles and clays.
Presently, domestic SCP method with low replacement ratio is required as alternative in order to overcome the profitability of the sand resource because of the deficiency phenomenon of the sand resource by the actual condition design and construction is made by SCP method with low replacement ratio more than 70% for the port construction in the safe side. Sand compaction pile(SCP) method has been mainly used to improve the properties of soft clay or loose sandy ground. In design of SCP at soft clay ground, it is very important to determine the stress concentration ratio of composite ground relevant to the area replacement ratio. In this study, 2-dimensional FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio of composite ground depending upon the area replacement ratio. When the interpretation result replacement ratio was 30%, the stress assigned rate showed and as the replacement ratio was high, the stress assigned rate according to the sinkage showed the low stress assigned rate.
