  • This paper represents methods to diagnose nutrient deficient stresses of cucumber plants using several physiological instruments. The stresses could be detected by measuring and analyzing the difference of chlorophyll content, photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), temperature difference (DT) and light absorbance at wavelengths of 480nm, 560nm and 710nm between deficient and control plants. From the all over experiments, the stresses could be first diagnosed in the 3rd to 5th day in general after treatment and the overall diagnosis rate was estimated at more than 50% up to 100%.

  • This paper presents an investigation why Mn-steel high pressure gas cylinders have been failed in service. The fractured cylinders have been collected to identify the reason of the failure using various methods. The undamaged, new cylinder has also been tested for the base data. We examined the chemical compositions and fracture facets as well as the mechanical properties of the vessels. The microstructural observations of the fractured regions of the cylinder did not indicate the noticeable defects which might cause the failure. The experiments of cylinders on the compositinal and mechanical tests showed that the cylinder was in good shape according the standards of gas pressure vessel. The morphological analysis of the fracture surfaces concluded that the origin of the failure was the local weak segments induced by the external impact to the cylinder, which result in a sudden, fast fracture.

  • Polynomials are one of most important and widely used numerical tools in dealing with a smooth function on a bounded domain and trigonometric functions work for smooth periodic functions. However, they are not the best choice if a function has a bounded support in space and in frequency domain. The Prolate Spheroidal wave function (PSWF) of order zero has been known as a best candidate as a basis for band-limited functions. In this paper, we review some basic properties of PSWFs defined as eigenfunctions of bounded Fourier transformation. We also propose numerical inversion schemes based on PSWF and present some numerical examples to show their feasibilities as signal processing tools.

  • Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in the media of methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ mixtures using hydroxypropyl cellulose and ammonium persulfate as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The effects of concentrations of initiator and steric stabilizer, amount of monomer, polymerization temperature, methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ ratio, and purification of monomer and nitrogen purge on the particle size of the latices and molecular weight of the polymers were investigated. The average particle diameter increased with increasing concentration of initiator, water content in methyl alcohol/$H_2O$ media, and polymerization temperature, but decreased with monomer and stabilizer concentrations. The viscosity average molecular weight increased with increasing concentrations of monomer, steric stabilizer, and water content in dispersion media, but decreased with initiator concentration and polymerization temperature. The PAM polymers prepared with the purified monomer and the nitrogen purging before the reaction showed the highest molecular weight.

  • The radiation belt structure can be approximately reproduced by a form of diffusion equation, which takes into account the radial diffusion process as well as those in pitch angle and energy. The solution of the equation depends on several factors including initial and boundary conditions, diffusion coefficients, and plasmapause location. In this paper, we have attempted to determine a set of approximate functions for the energetic electron fluxes near the outer edge of the outer belt in terms of solar wind variable. We used the electron flux data from SST onboard the THEMIS spacecraft and determined its correlation with solar wind conditions in a systematic way. The functions were determined separately for different energy channels from ~30 keV up to 719 keV. Our determination of these functions allows us to predict the radial boundary condition for the electron flux, which can be implemented in a forecast model.

  • This paper proposes a torque control method of permanent magnet synchronous motor, which has small torque ripple. The proposed control method is using the finite control set-model predictive control(FCS-MPC) strategy. An optimal input voltage vector minimizing a cost function is chosen among 6 passible active input voltage vectors following the FCS-MPC strategy. Then, a modulation factor for the optimal input voltage vector is computed to minimize the torque ripple. Thus, the proposed control method yields fast torque response and small torque ripple. The efficacy of the proposed method was verified through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, design of PMA-RSM(permanent magnet assisted reluctance synchronous motor) for washing machine using FEM(finite element method) is presented and algorithms to maximize electromagnetic torque is introduced. FEM has been approached to show the effects of motor parameters on the developed average torque and maximum torque. The designed motor is a combination of salient poles, which is making reluctance torque, and permanent magnet which are located on the air-gap of rotor to get a enough torque during low speed resign. And to verify availability of the proposed PMA-RSM, various simulation are done as compared with bldc motor which is used for washing machine.

  • This paper presents a simple electronic starter for single phase induction motor (SPIM). It replaces the centrifugal switch in the auxiliary winding circuit of the capacitor start type SPIM. The centrifugal switch disconnects the auxiliary winding when the motor gets close to its rated speed. The presence of the centrifugal switch, with its possibly fluttering contacts, reduce reliability of SPIM. The operation principle of the proposed electronic starter is explained, and illustrated with experimental results.

  • Longitudinal magnetic recording process of thin film media was simulated by the 2-D finite element method (FEM). To describe precisely the hysteresis behavior of thin film media, scalar Preisach model was used. In this paper, we discussed the formation of bit patterns and importance of modeling of minor loops in high density recording. The effects of the media coercivity and film thickness on the remanent magnetization and transition shape were investigated.
