  • This paper describes the results of journals usage analysis conducted at the Korea Institute of Industry & Technology Information. The study covers the photocopy usage of journals during the past 5 years from 1995 through 1999. Analysis showed that 19% of journal collection met 93% of total demands. The Analysis also provided on journal use patterns. The most frequently used subject field of journals was Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. A relationship was found between rankings of journal as measured by the photocopy data and SCI journal citation ranking, however, no relationship was found between photocopy rankings of journal and rankings of journal impact factors.

  • The objective of the study is to develop the identification code of the Korean sci-tech journals for KSCI. To achieve the purpose, the study has researched and analyzed a variety of the major international and national serials or information objects identification code systems. And then, KOJIC(KOrean Journal Identification Code) has been developed. KOJIC is unique, unambiguous identifiers for titles of Korean journals in all subject areas. The concepts of KOJIC are simplicity, mnemonics, internationalization, and extensibility of its use. KOJIC is a six-character and alphanumeric code and has one check character.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyse correlation between the national competitiveness and research competitiveness in OECD countries. As the result of correlation analysis there are positive correlations among competitiveness indicators(GERD, SCI articles, average citation counts, JCR journal titles, patents). And SCI articles and peer-reviewed journals emanating from the developed countries or the OECD is essential to maintaining national and research competitiveness in Korea. This study also calls for further correlation analysis between research competitiveness and academic libraries.

  • Objective : To research the trends of the study related to bee venom and cancer, and to establish the hereafter direction of the study on bee venom herbal acupuncture. Method : We searched in PubMed, with bee venom and cancer(in English, with abstract) Results : 1. We searched 28 Journals, 36 Papers. the frequency of Journals and Papers was as follows: Biochem Biophys Res Commun(4 Papers), FEBS Lett(3), Life Sci, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, J Immunol(each 2), other 23 Journals(each 1). 2. The pattern of the study was as follows: Review article(3 Journals, 3 Papers), Epidemiologic study(1, 1), Experimental study(24, 32) In vivo 1, 1), In vitto(24, 31) 3. The involved components of bee venom were as follows: Melittin(20), Apamin(8), Phospholipase A2(3), Melittin & Phospholipase A2(3), Melittin& Tertiapin(1). 4. The involved cancer was as follows: leukemia(9), tumor(5), neuroblastoma(4), pituitary tumor and pheochromocytoma(each 3), lymphoma, astrocytoma, glioma and lung cancer(small cell carcinoma)(eacn 2), bladder carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, breast carcinoma, ovarian carcinoma and spuamous cell carcinoma(each 1) Conclusion : We concluded that the most frequent pattern of the study was in vitro experimental study with peptide components of bee venom and the most frequeni invovled cancer was leukemia.

  • It is important for scientific and technological papers to build citation DB and to offer service. The best example of citation DB is SCI that has been utilized in the world. The majority of Korean journals is not SCI journal, so it is impossible for the domestic journals to conduct quantitative analysis and performance evaluation. Korea Science Citation Index Service is the alternative service to get rid of the above problem. In the study, we carried out the user satisfaction survey for new vision of service from existing KSCI, correcting the result data. We evaluated the data and then derived the level of current system and the future improvement direction.

  • The availability and use (citedness) of Korean medical journals are measured based on the bibliometric data of 82 journals evaluated by the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors between 1997 and 1999. A Korean medical journal is held on the average by one half of Korean medical libraries investigated. Only 10 journals (12.2%) are covered in any of 36 abstract and index databases in the field of medicine searchable through DIALOG. The journal self-citation rate is 3.402%. 1.092% of papers are cited at least once by SCI journal papers within 3 years after publication. The average SCI impact factor of Korean medical journals is 0.111, However, the impact factor of MEDLINE or SCISearch journals is 10 times higher. The results show that the Korean medical journals are not easily available domestically and internationally. They are hardly cited by Korean colleagues or by foreign scholars either.

  • Extraction of communities from a journal citation database by the citation structure is a useful tool to see closely related groups of the journals. SCI of Thomson Reuters or SCOPUS of Elsevier have had tried to grasp community structure of the journals in their indices according to citation relationships, but such a trial has not been made yet with the Korean Citation Index, KCI. Therefore, in this study, we extracted communities of the journals of the natural science area in KCI, using various clustering algorithms for a social network based on citations among the journals and compared the groups obtained with the classfication of KCI. The infomap algorithm, one of the clustering methods applied in this article, showed the best grouping result in the sense that groups obtained by it are closer to the KCI classification than by other algorithms considered and reflect well the citation structure of the journals. The classification results obtained in this study might be taken consideration when reclassification of the KCI journals will be made in the future.

  • Text mining is one of the branches of data mining and is used to find any meaningful information from the large amount of text. In this study, we analyzed titles and keywords of two SCI journals on rock engineering by using text mining to find major research area, trend and associations of research fields. Visualization of the results was also included for the intuitive understanding of the results. Two journals showed similar research fields but different patterns in the associations among research fields. IJRMMS showed simple network, that is one big group based on the keyword 'rock' with a few small groups. On the other hand, RMRE showed a complex network among various medium groups. Trend analysis by clustering and linear regression of keyword - year frequency matrix provided that most of the keywords increased in number as time goes by except a few descending keywords.
