Antioxidative Activities of Spices Extracts on Peroxidation of Refined Sardine Oil (정제정어리유에 대한 향신료 추출물의 항산화작용)

  • This paper deals with the antioxidative activities of some spices on the autoxidation of refined sardine oil. The various spices powders(120mesh) were added into the refined sardine oil at the level of $0.1\%$ (w/w), and then incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ Among spices tested, herb spices showed higher antioxidative activities than spicy and seed spices. Especially, the antioxidative activities of herb spices on peroxidation of refined sardine oil were most effective in rosemary and sage. Furthermore, the available antioxidative compounds of rosemary and sage were fractionated into petroleum ether-soluble and -insolubles. Petroleum ether-soluble fractions(PESF) obtained from rosemary and sage on the autoxidation of refined sardine oil had a great antioxidative activities. The yields of PESF obtained from rosemary and sage were $10.3\%\;and\;12.6\%$, respectively. The PESF of rosemary and sage showed higher antioxidative effects than butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT), and indicated predominant metal ion-scavenging effect in PESF-refined sardine oil systems.

Sensory Characteristics of Doenjang Supplemented with Sage Powder as Assessed by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석법을 이용한 세이지분말 첨가 된장의 관능적 특성)

  • We examined sensory characteristics to obtain the optimal conditions for doenjang preparation, using response surface methodology (RSM) to evaluate addition of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) powder to, and the salinity of, doenjang. We aimed to develop a new variety of doenjang linking traditional Korean doenjang preparation with the physiological functionalities of sage. Color values were 1.20-2.70, flavor values 1.60-3.20, taste values 1.40-3.50, texture scores 1.60-3.50, and overall preference values 1.60-3.05, with the differences depending on experimental variations in preparation. Analysis of a reaction surface formed by a quadratic regression equation found that the R-squared values for overall preference, texture, taste, flavor,and color were 0.11-0.41, thus relatively low and insignificant, being less than 5%. In sensory tests, the color value was 2.91 when the salinity was 21.50%, and sage powder was added to a concentration of 3.10% (all w/w). The flavor score was 3.21 when the salinity was 22.52% and sage powder concentration was 3.68%. The taste value was 2.87 when the salinity was 8.62% and sage powder concentration was 4.46%. The texture score was 2.88 when the salinity was 8.00% and sage powder concentration was 6.06%. The overall preference score was 2.74 when the salinity was 20.40% and sage powder concentration was 2.66%. Although this preparation method is new to Koreans, doenjang with added sage was associated with higher sensory scores than traditional doenjang, confirming the possibility of development of a novel functional doenjang.

Antioxidative Effects of Volatile Oil and Oleoresin Extracted from Rosemary, Sage, Clove and Nutmeg (Rosemary, Sage, Clove 및 Nutmeg의 휘발성 및 비휘발성 성분의 항산화성)

  • This study was designed to investigate the antioxidative effects of volatile oil and oleoresin of rosemary mary (Rosmarinus officinalis Linne), sage (Salvia officinalis Linne), clove (Syzygium aromaticum Merrill) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houttuyn) using the Rancimat and POV test. The antioxidative effects of steam volatile oils of rosemary, sage clove. and nutmeg were not statistically significant, at the levels of 0.01, 0.05, 0.1% added to lard. The antioxidative effects of oleoresin of above 4 spices were increased with the oleoresin concentration. The comparison of the results between Rancimat and POV test of above 4 spices was almost same.

Fumigant Toxicity of 18 Essential oils and Their Major Compounds against Adult Oak Longicorn Beetle, Moechotypa diphysis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) (털두꺼비하늘소(Moechotypa diphysis)로에 대한 18종 식물정유와 주요성분의 훈증효과)

  • Fumigant toxicity of 18 plant essential oils were tested against the adults of oak longicorn beetle, Moechotypa diphysis. Among them, eucalyptus, rosemary and pennyroyal oils showed 100% mortality and sage oil showed 85% mortality at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. Eucalyptus and rosemary oils showed 100% mortality within 6 hr after treatment at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. GC and GC/MS analysis of the four essential oils and bioassay of their components revealed that 1,8-cineole (a major component of eucalyptus, rosemary and sage oils), thujone (a major component of sage oil) and pulegone (a major component of pennyroyal oil) showed higher adulticidal activity than others.

Use of Sucrose-Agar Globule with Root Exudates for Mass Production of Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

  • A sucrose-agar globule (SAG) was newly introduced to increase production of the vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungal spores, Gigaspora gigantea and Glomus fasciculatum. An SAG inoculum and a sucrose-agar globule with root exudates (SAGE) inoculum were prepared, and their spore productions were compared with a soil inoculum. When the SAGE was used as the inoculum on sucrose-agar medium plates the number of spores was increased (35% more than the soil inoculum). After the soil inoculum and SAGE were inoculated on an experimental plant, Zingiber officinale, the percentage root colonization, number of VAM spores, and dry matter content were analyzed. It was observed that the SAGE showed a higher percentage of root colonization (about 10% more), and increases in the number of spores (about 26%) and dry matter (more than 13%) for the two VAM fungal spores than the soil inoculum. The results of this study suggested that the SAGE inoculum may be useful for the mass production of VAM fungi and also for the large scale production of VAM fungal fertilizer.

  • This study deals with the content that was developed by the authors and the utilization of the 'Interactive Engineering Math Laboratory (IEmath Lab).' IEmath Lab provides online review lectures as well as a wide range of examples and exercises from the curriculum of engineering mathematics courses. The lectures come with pre-coded Python-based SageMath cells through which students can run and modify the code directly from this free laboratory. IEmath Lab is accessible via mobile devices so that the students can use it anywhere, anytime for maximum learning effectiveness and achievement. IEmath Lab would be an ideal tool for the effective learning and teaching of engineering mathematics, which combines theory and practice.

Inhalation of Clary Sage Oil before Chemotherapy Alleviates Anxiety and Stress without Changing Blood Pressure: A Randomized Controlled Trial

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of inhaled clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) oil or linalyl acetate on patients' anxiety and stress levels before undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: Forty-five eligible participants were randomly assigned to inhale clary sage oil, or linalyl acetate, each at concentrations of 5% vol/vol in almond oil or pure almond oil (control). State-trait anxiety inventory (STAI), Stress rating scale, anxiety-visual analog scale (Anxiety-VAS), stress-visual analog scale (Stress-VAS), blood pressure, and heart rate were measured before and after the inhalation prior to undergoing chemotherapy. Results: Anxiety-VAS and Stress-VAS were significantly lower after than before inhalation of clary sage oil (p< .01 and p< .05, respectively) and linalyl acetate (p< .05 and p< .05, respectively), despite having no significant difference in the three groups compared with control group. Systolic (p< .05) and diastolic (p< .01) blood pressure before undergoing chemotherapy were significantly lower after than before inhalation of linalyl acetate, while there was no significant difference in after than before inhalation of clary sage oil, despite both reducing levels of anxiety and stress. Conclusion: These findings suggest that linalyl acetate inhalation may be inappropriate in lowering anxiety and stress in patients undergoing chemotherapy, despite its anxiolytic and antistress effects, while clary sage oil inhalation may be useful in reducing anxiety and stress in patients undergoing chemotherapy, which has a risk of hypotensive side effects.

Antimicrobial Activity against Helicobacter pylori and Antioxidant Activity of Yerusalem sage (Phlomis frutcosa L.) (예루살렘세이지(Phlomis frutcosa L.) 추출물의 Helicobacter pylori에 대한 항균활성과 항산화활성)

  • The concentration of total phenolic compounds of the water and ethanol extracts of Yerusalem sage were 9.4 mg/g and 11.1 mg/g respectively. The total antioxidant activities of water and ethanol extracts of Yerusalem sage were 96.8% and 91.4% in ABTS assay and 97.6% and 87.2% in DPPH assay, PF of the water and ethanolic extracts were 1.1 and 1.6, respectively. TBARS were $0.9{\times}10^{-3}\;{\mu}M$ and $0.3{\times}10^{-3}\;{\mu}M$, respectively. Antimicrobial effect against H. pylori of the ethanol extract was $9{\sim}15\;mm$ of clear zone diameter at $50\;{\mu}g/ml{\sim}200\;{\mu}g/ml$ of phenolic compound. Phenolic profiles in Yerusalem sage chlorogenic aicd was the highest both in water and ethanol extracts in HPLC analyses.

  • This work started with recent students' conception on Linear Algebra. We were trying to help their understanding of Linear Algebra concepts by adding visualization tools. To accomplish this, we have developed most of needed tools for teaching of Linear Algebra class. Visualizing concepts of Linear Algebra is not only an aid for understanding but also arouses students' interest on the subject for a better comprehension, which further helps the students to play with them for self-discovery. Therefore, visualizing data should be prepared thoroughly rather than just merely understanding on static pictures as a special circumstance when we would study visual object. By doing this, we carefully selected GeoGebra which is suitable for dynamic visualizing and Sage for algebraic computations. We discovered that this combination is proper for visualizing to be embodied and gave a variety of visualizing data for undergraduate mathematics classes. We utilized GeoGebra and Sage for dynamic visualizing and tools used for algebraic calculation as creating a new kind of visual object for university math classes. We visualized important concepts of Linear Algebra as much as we can according to the order of the textbook. We offered static visual data for understanding and studied visual object and further prepared a circumstance that could create new knowledge. We found that our experience on visualizations in Linear Algebra using Sage and GeoGebra to our class can be effectively adopted to other university math classes. It is expected that this contribution has a positive effect for school math education as well as the other lectures in university.

Sagehood - An Interconnectivity of Confucianism and Mythology (유가 사상과 신화적 사유의 상호 관계성 연구 - 성인 관념을 중심으로 -)

  • This study examines the ways in which Confucianism developed in connection with other thoughts. Mythology especially had an great impact on the formation of Confucian thoughts. This study focuses on the concept of sage and examines how Confucianism and mythological thoughts influenced on formation and reformation of the concepts. In ancient religion, sages as a hierophantic figure, mediates human beings and gods, delivering the gods' messages to the human and the human's wishes to the gods. The fused role of shaman and ruler began to separate. A new type of leader without political power, but with a religious role with a moral authority is the Confucian concept of sage. A sage in Confucianism is an ideal person like Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, an ordinary person can attain with effort. Anyone can become a sage in Confucianism. The early Confucian sage was more like a hyper-human with unaccessible authority in mythology. Later, a sage in Confucianism began to be described as a model figure that any human being can become. The aspect of shamans and diviners (wushi 巫師) did not disappear, but merged into a kingly power and transformed into a sage-king with moral authority. The new images are reflected in Confucian ideology of statehood or its religiosity. This study has explored the ways in which Confucianism and mythological thoughts interacted and influenced to each other through a concept of sage as an ideal personhood.
