Uplink Congestion Control over Asymmetric Networks using Dynamic Segment Size Control (비대칭 망에서 동적 세그먼트 크기 조정을 통한 상향링크 혼잡제어)

  • Asymmetric networks that the downlink bandwidth is larger than the uplink bandwidth may cause the degradation of the TCP performance due to the uplink congestion. In order to solve this problem, this paper designs and implements the Dynamic Segment Size Control mechanism which offers a suitable segment size for current networks. The proposed mechanism does not require any changes in customer premises but suppress the number of ACKs using segment reassembly technique to avoid the uplink congestion. The gateway which adapted the Dynamic Segment Size Control mechanism, detects the uplink congestion condition and dynamically measures the bandwidth asymmetric ratio and the packet loss ratio. The gateway reassembles some of segments received from the server into a large segment and transmits it to the client. This reduces the number of corresponding ACKs. In this mechanism, the SACK option is used when occurs the bit error during the transmission. Based on the simulation in the GEO satellite network environment, we analyzed the performance of the Dynamic Segment Size Control mechanism.

Construction of a WAP Proxy and its Improvement for Wireless Communication Efficiency (WAP 프록시의 구축 및 무선통신 효율을 위한 개선)

  • The WAP 2.0 system is a newly proposed wireless communication system by the WAP Forum for interoperability across Internet environment and the system takes charge of communication between WAP terminals and existing origin Web servers. The purpose of this paper is 1) to construct a WAP 2.0 proxy proposed by the WAP Forum and 2) to improve the WAP Proxy in order to increase communication efficiency between wired and wireless communication objects. The Improved WAP proxy constructed in this study provides links between wired and wireless communication environments using the split-TCP concept. However, unlike the split-TCP connection, The improved WAP proxy maintains TCP's end-to-end semantics and reduces overhead by avoiding operations as much as possible on the upper protocol layer. In addition, The improved WAP proxy supports SACK(Selective Acknowledgement ) option and Timestamp option for speedy re-transmission which leads to reduction of performance degradation. After constructing the improved WAP proxy under Linux environment, experiments have been taken. The experimental results show that, compared with the experiments when a WAP proxy proposed by the WAP Forum is used, both data transmission delay time and data transmission size decrease to show that communication efficiency is increased. In particular, as packet missing ratio Increases, data transmission size decreases, which demonstrates that the improved WAP proxy is very effective for performance improvement in wireless communication environment.

Postharvest Changes in Quality and Biochemical Components of Leaf Lettuce (상치의 수확후(收穫後) 품질(品質) 및 성분변화(成分變化))

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the shelf-life and quality changes in relation to biochemical components in leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The shelf-life of leaf lettuce at room temperature was 2 to 3 days. But it was extended to 3 weeks by packaging in a 0.01 mm thick polyethylene film sack when stored at $3^{\circ}C$. The ascorbic acid contents of fresh leaf lettuce was 25 mg per 100 gram fresh weight. The acid at room temperature was almost destroyed after 4 days storage. But the contents of ascorbic acid at $3^{\circ}C$ maintained about 50 to 60% of the initial level in packaging of polyethylene film sack after 8 days storage. The content of chlorophyll was greatly decreased at room temperature but no significant changes were found at $3^{\circ}C$. The changes of total sugar and reducing sugar contents during storage were not very different between treatments. The contents of alkali soluble protein and free amino acid gradually increased in the treatments of polyethylene film sack packaging during storage in general, but the contents decreased after the increase in control treatment. Nucleic acid content, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities were measured and discussed in relation to the leaf senescence.

A Basic Study on a Magnetic Fluid Driven Artificial Heart (자성유체에 의해 구동되는 인공심장에 관한 기초연구)

  • A variety of actuators fur an implantable artificial heart have been studied. They, all, however, share the disadvantages of a complicated energy conversion mechanism and of the need to use bearings. A ferrofluidic actuator directly drives magnetic fluids by applying a magnetic field to these fluids; it does not require bearings. In this study, the feasibility of a ferrofluidic actuator for an implantable artificial heart was studied. An way of two Poles of ring solenoids was mounted near the acrylic tube $({\phi}\;7.4mm)$. A rubber sack (volume : $2m{\ell}$ was connected to both ends of the acrylic tube. The sack were encased in a rigid chamber that had inlet and outlet ports. The acrylic tube and the rubber sack were filled with water encased in a rigid chamber magnetic fluid and the iron cylinder were immersed in the water. Two experiment method was conducted. 1) distance between stoppers were 72mm and 2) distance between stoppers were 104mm. A stroke volume was stability and $0.96m{\ell}$ was obtained in the experiment 1 and $1.92m{\ell}$ in the experiment 2. The energy efficiency of Experiment method 2 is about five times than Experiment method 2. A magnetic fluid-driven blood pump could be feasible if the magnetic fluid with high magnetization (3 times yester than the current value) is developed.

  • Non-destructive freshness measurement using spectroscopy has been carried out several times, but research on freshness and freshness has not been conducted. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a system for visually measuring and quantifying the air sack inside the egg by non - destructive method. The experimental environment which designed a small chamber was composed of 850nm band of two IR lasers, IR camera and two servo motors to acquire air sack Images. When the air sack volume ratio is 2.9% or less and the density is 0.9800 or more, the Haugh Unit value is 60 or more It was judged to be a fresh egg of a grade B or higher. These results mean, using the weight measurement, nondestructive decision system, and freshness evaluating algorithm. It can be expected to distinguish grade B or more marketable eggs without using destructive methods.

Algorithm for Performance Enhancement of Satellite Link using TCP (TCP를 사용한 위성망에서의 성능 향상 알고리즘)

  • 본 논문에서는 TCP를 사용한 위성망에서의 문제점을 도출하고 그에 대한 성능향상 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 긴 전파 지연과 높은 에러율을 지닌 위성링크는 TCP의 성능을 현저히 떨어뜨린다. 특히 TCP에서는 에러에 의한 세그먼트 손실도 Congestion에 의한 손실로 판단하여 Slow Start나 Congestion Avoidance 알고리즘을 적용시킨다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 에러에 의한 손실과 Congestion의한 손실을 구분해 주는 ENA(Error Notification Ack) 알고리즘을 제안했다. 그리고 위성에서 좋은 성능을 나타내는 SACK TCP에 이 알고리즘을 적용시켜 성능을 평가했다.

TCP Congestion Control based on Context Switch in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (이기종망간의 수직적 핸드오프에 대한 상태전환 방식의 TCP 혼잡제어방안)

  • The heterogeneous wireless access networks has been envisioned to characterize the future wireless networks. In such environments, TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) has to experience poor end-to-end performance because bandwidth and link delay change suddenly when a mobile node moves over different types of wireless networks, which is called vertical handoff. In this paper, we propose a new TCP which maintains each set of congestion control variables, which we call TCP context, for each type of wireless network. The proposed TCP can switch the TCP context against vertical handoff in order to adjust quickly to a newly arrived network. In simulations, the proposed TCP has higher throughput than TCP SACK(Selective Acknowledgment Options) due to its great features to vertical handoff situations.

Use of Winter Buds as Scion Collected from Mulberry (Morus alba L.) Graftages (접목상묘로부터 채취한 수목의 이용에 관한 연구)

  • To use of scions taken from the branch of graftages, 8 storage methods during winter season were examined in a underground cellar and in soil by checking the rate of normal scions to total winter buds and the rate of alive graftages to total graftages. The results were as follows : 1. The highest rate of normal scions dropped in 80-120cm of branch from soil surface. 2. The highest rate of normal scions showed in the cellar storage method. Buring 2/3 of branch in soil increased the normal scoin rate than buring 1/2 of branch. However, wrapping branch with vinyl film, moreover covering with straw sack decreased the normal scion rate. 3. The alive rate to total graftage showed the highest by about 90% under the cellar storage. Burying 2/3 of branch in soil and vinyl wrapping, more over covering straw sack decreased the alive rate by 81.5-67.5%. 4. Correlation between the alive rate and the water content in cortex was negatively significant at 5%(r=-0.71*). The optium water content for graftage may drop in 47-53%. 5. The alive rate of graftages was higher in scoins taken from graftages than that taken from farmer fields.

Evaluation of Wastepaper Bale Compositions and their Fiber Properties for Board Grade Paper (산업용지 제조용 압축폐지 베일의 분석 및 섬유 특성 평가)

  • It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.

A Study on Mechanized System of Barley Harvesting (보리의 기계수확체계(機械收穫體系) 시험(試驗))

  • Farm population was rapidly decreasing due to shift of the people from farm sector to the non-farm sector caused by the economic growth of the country. Especially, a great shortage of farm labor in busy farming period in June and October is becoming a serious problem in maintaining or promoting land productivity. The peak of labor requirement in summer is caused by rice transplanting and barley harvesting. In order to reduce the restrictions imposed on farm management by the concurrence of labor requirement and the lack of labor, the experimental study for mechanization of barley harvesting has been carried out in the fields. 1. The machines for barley harvesting were knap-sack type reapers, windrow reaper (power tiller attachment), binder and combine. The order of higher efficiency of machine for barley harvesting was combine, binder, windrow reaper (WR), knapsack type reaper 1(KSTR1), and knap sack type reaper 2(KSTR2; mist and duster attachment). 2. The ratio of grain loss for the manual, binder, and combine plot was about four percent of total field yield. 3. The total yield of barley in 35 days and 40 days harvesting after heading were 514 kg and 507kg per 10 ares respectively. The yield of 35 days-plot was higher than other experimental plots. 4. The lowest yield was recorded in 30 days-plot due to the large quantity of immatured grains and having lighter 1000-grain weight. The ratio of immatured grains was 2.66 percent and 1000-grain weight was 29.4 grams. 5. The total harvesting cost of the windrow reaper was 10,178 won per 10 ares. It was the lowest value compared to other machines. The next were combine, binder, KSTR1, KSTR2, and manual in sequence. As a result, the optimum time of barley harvesting for mechanization was 35-40 days after heading. Combine, binder, and windrow reaper were recommended as the suitable machines for barley harvesting in the work efficiency. However, in total harvesting cost, the windrow reaper was the most promising machine for barley harvesting.
