  • A 43-year-old woman presented with dizziness, ataxia and right hearing difficulty. Her magnetic resonance images demonstrated an inhomogeneously contrast-enhanced large tumor growing into right cavernous sinus and Meckel's cave located totally within intradural retroclival region. She underwent retromastoid suboccipital craniotomy to resect the tumor mass and adjuvant gamma knife radiosurgery for remnant tumor at 1 month after operation. Adjuvant radiosurgery after surgical excision seems to be effective for the treatment of intradural extraosseous chordomas.

  • The majority of the SKYBIO will be used in the treatment of water in food processing plants, swimming pools and cooling towers, in the manufacture fabric softeners in Australia. Most will eventually be released into domestic sewage system as a consequence of product use. The SKYBIO is not readily biodegradable (0% over 28 days), and is expected to have a low partition coefficient and high water solubility (285 g/L), all indicating that the material would be mobile in both aquatic and terrestrial compartment. The PEC/PNEC ratio for the aquatic environment is 56. This value is significantly greater than 1, indicating an immediate concern to the aquatic compartment. However as a consequence of it's cationic character, the SKYBIO will be expected to associate to negatively charged organic matter in soil and sediment.

  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in the brain and a structural component of neuronal membranes. Changes in DHA content of neuronal membranes lead to functional changes in the activity of receptors and other proteins which might be associated with synaptic function. Accumulating evidence suggests the beneficial effects of dietary DHA supplementation on neurotransmission. This article reviews the beneficial effects of DHA on the brain; uptake, incorporation and release of DHA at synapses, effects of DHA on synapses, effects of DHA on neurotransmitters, DHA metabolites, and changes in DHA with age. Further studies to better understand the metabolome of DHA could result in more effective use of this molecule for treatment of neurodegenerative or neuropsychiatric diseases.

  • Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) was first introduced in the 1990s. Currently, it is a widely accepted surgical approach for the treatment of esophageal cancer, as it is an oncologically sound procedure; its advantages when compared to open procedures, including reduction in postoperative complications, reduction in the length of hospital stay, and improvement in quality of life, are well documented. However, debates are still ongoing about the safety and efficacy of MIE. The present review focuses on some of the current issues related to conventional MIE and robot-assisted MIE based on evidence from the current literature.

  • Dural ateriovenous fistula (DAVF) at the craniocervical junction is rare. We report a patient presenting with brainstem dysfunction as an uncommon onset. Brainstem lesion was suggested by magnetic resonance image study. Angiogram revealed a DAVF at a high cervical segment supplied by the meningeal branch of the right vertebral artery, with ascending and descending venous drainage. Complete obliteration of the fistula was achieved via transarterial Onyx embolization. Clinical cure was achieved in the follow-up period; meanwhile, imaging abnormalities of this case disappeared. Accordingly, we hypothesize that a brainstem lesion of this case was caused by craniocervical DAVF, which induced venous hypertension. Thus, venous drainage patterns should be paid attention to because they are important for diagnosis and theraputic strategy.
