A simple calculation tool for added resistance in waves is developed to utilize for initial design or embedded module for navigation support system. In order to select an appropriate calculation method for added resistance in waves, three methods (drift method, integrated pressure method, radiated energy method) based on strip method are applied to Wigley I and KVLCC2. The methods for added resistance in waves give the underestimated results because it is difficult to consider nonlinear effects due to reflected wave. We apply asymptotic (Faltinsen's method) and empirical formula (NMRI's method) to improve the accuracy for short wave length region. In comparison with experimental results, the combination of radiated energy method and short wave correction method of NMRI is the most reasonable. However, a simple sum of results calculated by two methods gives rise to the overestimation of added resistance for short wave length region because added resistance of radiated energy method exits in total reflection region. To overcome this problem, modified radiated energy method is proposed using correction coefficient defined by reflection coefficient of NMRI's method. Finally, added resistance in regular waves is composed of added resistance of modified radiated energy method and that of short wave correction method of NMRI. Estimated added resistance in regular waves is validated by comparison with experimental results of other research groups.
This study discusses the wave transformation(wave reflection and transmission) by a impermeable submerged breakwater with one ray, and integrated horizontal wave pressure acting on the structure. Numerical method in this study is based on the simplified eigenfunction expansion method and linear wave theory. Although this method is very simple, the results give good agreement with the one of the strict eigenfunciton expansion method, especially, in case that the crown width of the submerged breakwater becomes longer and its crown water depth shallower. Therefore, it is concluded that this simplified method is one good method in planning coastal structures as like the submerged breakwater in this study, and computing their wave transformations.
A systematic numerical comparative study of the performance of semicircular and rectangular submerged breakwaters interacting with solitary waves is the basis of this paper. To accomplish this task, Nwogu's extended Boussinesq model equations are employed to simulate the interaction of the wave with breakwaters. The finite difference technique has been used to discretize the spatial terms while a fourth-order predictor-corrector method is employed for time discretization in our numerical model. The proposed computational scheme uses a staggered-grid system where the first-order spatial derivatives have been discretized with fourth-order accuracy. For validation purposes, five test cases are considered and numerical results have been successfully compared with the existing analytical and experimental results. The performances of the rectangular and semicircular breakwaters have been examined in terms of the wave reflection, transmission, and dissipation coefficients (RTD coefficients) denoted by KR, KT, KD. The latter coefficient KD emerges due to the non-energy conserving KR and KT. Our computational results and graphical illustrations show that the rectangular breakwater has higher reflection coefficients than semicircular breakwater for a fixed crest height, but as the wave height increases, the two reflection coefficients approach each other. un the other hand, the rectangular breakwater has larger dissipation coefficients compared to that of the semicircular breakwater and the difference between them increases as the height of the crest increases. However, the transmission coefficient for the semicircular breakwater is greater than that of the rectangular breakwater and the difference in their transmission coefficients increases with the crest height. Quantitatively, for rectangular breakwaters the reflection coefficients KR are 5-15% higher while the diffusion coefficients KD are 3-23% higher than that for the semicircular breakwaters, respectively. The transmission coefficients KT for rectangular breakwater shows the better performance up to 2.47% than that for the semicircular breakwaters. Based on our computational results, one may conclude that the rectangular breakwater has a better overall performance than the semicircular breakwater. Although the model equations are non-dissipative, the non-energy conserving transmission and reflection coefficients due to wave-breakwater interactions lead to dissipation type contribution.
This study examines the reflection characteristic of a thin transition layer of the ocean bottom showing variability with respect to depth. In order to model the surficial sediment simply, we reduce the Biot model to the depth dependent wave equation for the pseudo fluid using the fluid approximation (weak frame approximation). From the reduced equation, the difference between the inherent frequency dependency of the reflection and the frequency dependency resulting from a thin transition layer is investigated. Using Tang's depth porosity profile model of the surficial sediment [D. Tang et al., IEEE J. Oceanic Eng., vol.27(3), 546-560(2002)], we numerically simulated the reflection loss and investigated the contribution from both frequency dependencies. In addition, the effects of different sediment type and varying depth structure of the sediment are discussed.
Complex acoustic signals can be formed in a water-filled acoustic pulse tube under some exciting conditions. It makes difficult to measure plane-wave reflection coefficient with the pulse tube for low frequency bands. In this study, using COMSOL Multiphysics we show that the tube wall excitation generates complex acoustic field of nonplanar mode as well as planar one. From such field incident or reflected planar mode can be decomposed respectively with a modal decomposition method, two-dimensional Fourier filtering. It makes possible to more accurately determine the plane-wave reflection coefficient of acoustic specimen with time gating.
In this paper, infinite frequency selective surface comprised with rectangular plates which are arranged periodically is analyzed using Method of Moment based on Galerkin's method. In analysis, it is assumed that the plates are infinite thin perfect conductors. Based on this assumption, the reflection characteristics of the FSS is compared according to the polarization of plane-wave and the direction of incidence. In the results, the variation of reflection characteristics of the FSS highly depends on the direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is parallel to the plane of incidence, but the variation is nearly independent upon direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is perpendicular to the plane of incidence.
In this paper, we proposed a method to determine optimal wave source for mobile telephone communication. The approach is based on wave propagation simulation. Given a wave source we can determine wave propagation effects on every surfaces of wave simulation environment. The effect is evaluated as a cost function while the source’s position x, y, z work as variables for a parameter optimization. Wave propagated 3 dimensional space generates reflected waves whenever it hits boundary surface, it receives multiple waves which are reflected from various boundary surfacers in space. Three algorithms being implemented in this paper are based on a raytracing theory. If we get 3 dimensional geometry input as well as wave sources, we can compute wave propagation effects all over the boundary surfaces. In this paper, we present a new approach to compute wave propagation. First approach is tracing wave from a source. Source is modeled as a sphere casting vectors into various directions. This approach has limit in computing necessary wave propagation effects on all terrain surfaces. The second approach proposed is tracing wave backwards : tracing from a wave receiver to a wave source. For this approach we need to allocate a wave receiver on every terrain surfaces modeled, which requires enormous amount of computing time. But the second approach is useful for indoor wave propagation simulation. The last approach proposed in this paper is tracing sound by geometric computation. We allow direct, 1-relfe tion, and 2-reflection propagation. This approach allow us to save in computation time while achieving reasonable results. but due to the reflection limitaion, this approach works best in outdoor environment.
In this study, the reflection of the L(0,2), axially symmetric guided elastic wave from defects in pipes above ground is examined using finite element method. Phase and group velocity dispersion curves for the pipe were presented for the selection of the excitation mode. Some simple signal processing was applied to determine the amplitude of each of the reflected waves and to calculate the reflection coefficient. The results show the reflection coefficient of this mode is very close to a linear function of the circumferential extent of the defect. The motivation for the work was the development of a technique for inspecting chemical plant pipelines, but the study addresses the nature of the reflection function and its general applicability.
Seismic refracrion and reflection surveys were conducted along an E-W trending track of 482 m long in Ilwall-dong, Pohang. End-on spread was employed as source-receiver configuration with 2 m for both geophone interval and offset. Seismic data were acquired using 24 channels at every shot fired every 2 m along the track. Refraction data were interpreted using equations for multi-horizontal layers. Reflection data were processed in the sequence of trace edit, gain control, CMP sorting, NMO correction, mute, common offset gathering, and filtering to produce a single fold seismic section. There are two layers in shallow subsurface of the study area. Upper layer has the P-wave velocities ranging from 267 to 566 m/s and is interpreted as a layer of unconsolidated sediments. Lower layer has P-wave velocities of 1096-3108 m/s and is interpreted as weathered rock to hard rock. Most of the lower layer classified as soft rock. Upper layer has lateral variations in both P-wave velocity and thickness. The upper layer in the eastern part of the seismic line is 3-5 m thick and has P-wave velocity of 400 m/s in average. The upper layer in the western part is 8-10 m thick and has P-wave velocity of 340 m/s in average. The eastern part is interpreted as unconsolidated beach sand, while the western part is interpreted as infilled soil to develop a construction site. Three fault systems of high angle are imaged in seismic reflection section. It is interpreted that the area between these fault systems are relatively safe. Large buildings should be located in the safe ground condition of no fault and footings should be designed to be in the basement rock of 3-10 m deep below the surface.
The construction of the coastal structures and reclamation work causes the circulation reduced in the semi-closed inner water area and the unbalanced sediment budget of beach results in an alteration of beach topography. Among the various fluid motions in the nearshore zone water particle motion due to wave and wave-induced currents are the most responsible for sediment movement. Therefore it is needed to predict the effect of the environmental change because of development and so the prediction of wave transformation dose. The purpose of this study is to introduce the relation between waves wave-induced currents and sediment movement. In this study we will show numerical method using energy conservation equation involving reflection diffraction and reflection and the surfzone energy dissipation term due to wave breaking is included in the basic equation. For the wave-induced current the momentum equation was combined with radiation stresses lateral mixing and friction Various information is required in the prediction of wave-induced current depending on the prediction tool. We can predict changes in wave-induced current from the distribution of wave especially near the wave breaking zone. To evaluate these quantities we have to know the local condition of waves mean sea level and so on. The results from the wave field and wave-induced current field deformation models are used as input data of the sediment transport and bottom change model. Numerical model were established by a finite difference method then were applied to the development plan of the eastern Pusan coastal zone Yeonhwa-ri and Daebyun fishing port. We represented the result with 2-D graphics and made comparison between before and after development.
