Simultaneous Occurrence of Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis of the Spine : A Rare Combination

  • Hodgkin's disease presenting with spinal cord compression owing to extradural and bone involvement is extremely unusual. A 48-year-old man presented with progressive lower extremity weakness resulting from spinal cord compression attributable to an epidural mass in the thoracic vertebrae. The patient underwent decompressive surgery, and was then treated with chemotherapy for Langerhans cell histiocytosis. However, the disease progressed, and we performed second decompressive surgery with stabilization. Subsequent histopathological investigations revealed Hodgkin's lymphoma of the bone. Here, we describe an unusual case of spinal Hodgkin's lymphoma and Langerhans cell histiocytosis to draw attention to this combination as a possible diagnosis in patients with mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate lesions in the spine.

  • Primary tumors of the lung are uncommon in pediatric patients, particularly bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC). An 11-year-old female suffering from back pain for 1 month was referred to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of a pathologic fracture of the lumbar spine. Comprehensive evaluation disclosed numerous pulmonary metastases of rhabdomyosarcoma (stage IV). During chemotherapy, most of the lung lesions regressed, with the exception of two nodules. Wedge resections, intended for diagnosis and cure, yielded a histologic diagnosis of BAC.

  • Chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL) is a myeloproliferative disease with an increased number of mature eosinophils and their precursors, which results in infiltration into organs and organ enlargement. The main cause of this disease is the overexpression of tyrosine kinase. However, there is a need for alternative medication, because some patients are resistant to imatinib, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor for leukemia. Many studies have indicated that S100A8 and splicing factor proline and glutamine-rich (SFPQ) function as initiation signals of apoptosis in CEL cells. We reviewed structural studies on CEL cells related to S100A8 and SFPQ. Particularly, this review highlighted microscopic results for the study of S100A8 and SFPQ in CEL cells.

여행비용법에 의한 선상낚시 체험활동의 경제적 가치 추정 : 제주 차귀도를 대상으로 (Estimating the Economic Value of Boat Fishing Experience Activity Using Travel Cost Method: Focused on Jeju Island's Chagwido)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic value of boat fishing experience marine tourism activity in Jeju Island's Chagwido. The economic value is estimated as consumer surplus using count data models including the truncated Poisson model and the truncated negative binominal distribution model. This study collects the effective 504 questionnaires from boat fishing experience tourists in Jeju Island's Chagwido. The truncated negative binominal distribution model was statistically more suitable and valid than other models. The truncated negative binominal distribution model was applied to estimate consumer surplus as economic value from boat fishing experience tourism activity in Jeju Island's Chagwido. A consumer surplus value per trip was estimated as about 209,900 won. The annual economic value from boat fishing experience tourism activity was estimated as 273,700 won in Jeju Island's Chagwido. Consequently, boat fishing experience marine tourism activity has a very large economic value in Jeju Island.

The Physical Interaction between Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain Containing 2 and Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2

  • Recently, decades of robust researches on degenerative brain disorder have been highlighted on the interactive connection of gut and brain. In terms of inflammatory cytokine production, others have shown that Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain Containing 2 (NOD2) is involved with Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2). HEK293T cells were transiently co-transfected with Myc-tagged LRRK2 and Flag-tagged NOD2 and then followed by co-immunoprecipitation assay. In this study, we provide the novel finding of physical protein-protein interaction between NOD2 and LRRK2. G2019S variant has shown stronger interactions against NOD2 than those of wild type LRRK2. In an axis of NOD2-LRRK2 communication, it is believed to pave a new way in the understanding of the bidirectional molecular mechanism of brain disorder, including Parkinson's disease into gut inflammatory disease, including Crohn's disease.

Sous-vided Restructured Goat Steaks: Process Optimized by Thermal Inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Their Quality Characteristics

  • The thermal-death times of Listeria monocytogenes were determined in inoculated restructured goat steak at 60℃, 65℃, and 70℃ of sous-vide temperatures. D-values of L. monocytogenes in inoculated restructured goat steak ranged from 7.27 min at 60℃ to 0.46 min at 70℃. Times need to yield at least a 6 log reduction of L. monocytogenes at their temperatures for this product were 47, 12, and 3 min, respectively. After sous-vide, all microbial counts in non-inoculated samples were not detectable, except the aerobic and anaerobic mesophilie and lactic acid bacteria counts were lower than 2 Log CFU/g. For sous-vided and grilled sous-vided samples, sous-vide loss and surface shrinkage were the lowest in samples sous-vided at 60℃ for 47 min (p<0.05). These samples demonstrated the lowest CIE L*, shear force, hardness, gumminess and chewiness and the highest CIE a* and hue angle (p<0.05). Therefore, sous-vide at 60℃ for 47 min provided convenient ready-to-cook restructured goat steak for microbiology safety and optimization of physicochemical quality.

지리산 노각나무(Stewartia koreana)림의 식생구조 (Vegetation Structures of Stewartia koreana Forest in Mt. Jirisan)

  • 본 연구는 지리산지역의 노각나무림을 대상으로 식물사회학적 방법으로 군락을 분류하고, 식생과 토양과의 상관관계를 밝히고자 구배분석을 실시하였다. 노각나무림은 노각나무-졸참나무군락, 노각나무-신갈나무군락, 노각나무전형군락으로 분류되었으며, 노각나무-졸참나무군락은 서어나무아군락과 전형아군락으로 구분되었다. 노각나무는 해발고 409m에서 최고 1,604m까지 자생하였다. 노각나무군락의 중요치 분석결과 노각나무가 75.47%로 가장 높았으며, 졸참나무 21.83%, 신갈나무 18.65%, 당단풍나무 18.19%, 철쭉 10.56%, 때죽나무 10.36% 순으로 나타났다. 본 조사지의 토양분석 결과 평균적으로 유기물함량 3.15~39.1%, 전질소함량 0.37~11.7%, 유효인산함량 0.9~45.4mg/kg, 치환성 양이온 $K^+$ $0.09{\sim}1.48cmol^+/kg$, 토양 수분 19.28~55.47%, 토양 pH는 4.08~5.65인 것으로 조사되었다. DCCA ordination을 이용한 노각나무군락과 환경요인과의 상관관계 분석결과, 해발고에 의해 노각나무-신갈나무군락, 노각나무전형군락, 노각나무-졸참나무전형아군락, 서어나무아군락 순으로 분포하였다.

해산로티퍼 (Brachionus plicatilis)를 이용한 브롬화난연제 (BDE-47, BDE-209)의 생태독성평가 (Ecotoxic Evaluations of BDE-47 and BDE-209 using Rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis))

  • 해산로티퍼, B. plicatilis의 생존율과 개체군 성장률을 이용하여 PBDEs (BDE-47, BDE-209)의 생태독성평가를 수행하였다. 생존율의 경우 BDE-47은 $3.9mg\;L^{-1}$ 이상의 농도에서 유의하게 감소하여 농도의존성을 나타냈으나, BDE-209의 경우는 큰 변화를 나타내지 않았다. 개체군 성장률의 경우는 BDE-47과 BDE-209에서 각각 농도의존적으로 감소하였다. 본 시험결과 $EC_{50}$값은 생존율의 경우 각각 $13mg\;L^{-1}$$1,000mg\;L^{-1}$이었고 개체군 성장률은 각각 $3.67mg\;L^{-1}$$862.75mg\;L^{-1}$로 나타나 BDE-47이 BDE-209에 비해 76~235배 더 독성이 강한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 BDE-47과 BDE-209에 대한 생존율의 LOEC값은 각각 $3.90mg\;L^{-1}$, $>1,000mg\;L^{-1}$으로 나타났으며, 개체군 성장률의 LOEC값은 각각 $1.95mg\;L^{-1}$, $125mg\;L^{-1}$로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통하여 도출된 LOEC값은 연안환경에서의 BDE-47과 BDE-209농도가 이를 초과하는 경우 B. plicatilis와 같은 동물성 플랑크톤에 악영향을 미칠 것으로 판단된다. 또한 NOEC와 $EC_{50}$값은 BDE-47 및 BDE-209와 같은 독성 물질의 환경 기준을 수립하기 위한 귀중한 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Endovascular Revascularization for the Obstruction after Patch Angioplasty in Buerger's Disease

  • Surgical revascularization for patients with Buerger's disease is possible only in a few cases, due to the diffuse segmental involvement and the lack of distal runoff vessels available for bypass surgery. We encountered a case of resting pain in the right foot, coldness with dysesthesia, and cyanosis on the right 1st toe. The patient was treated with an endovascular intervention after vein patch angioplasty failed due to an inflammatory reaction of Buerger's disease. We suggest that an endovascular procedure can be an effective treatment, even in addition to more conservative and surgical management, in patients with Buerger's disease and critical limb ischemia.

RNS에 의한 고속 곱셈기 구성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the High-Speed Multiplier Architecture Using RNS)

  • 조합논리회로를 사용한 고속 RNS 곱셈기의 구성을 제안하였다. 연산시간과 하드웨어 절감을 결정하는 최적 moduti 선택조건에 대해서도 검토하였으며 RRNS에서는 magnitude index를 사용한 변형된 CRT로써 출력 변환하였다. 제안된 곱셈기의 추정시간은 파이프 라인없이 NRNS인 경우 31. 7ns, RRNS인 경우 47.95ns이었다.
