The purpose of this study was to compare urban and rural seniors' perceptions on the eight aspects of the World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities (AFC) initiative on Jeju Island, South Korea. Face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires were administered to 497 persons aged 65+ living on Jeju Island. Findings suggested that urban and rural held significantly different perceptions on five aspects of AFC (outdoor space and buildings, housing, civic participation and employment, community support and health services, and respect and social inclusion). Predictors of overall AFC score for all participants included age and living in a single-family home. Among urban dwellers, monthly household income and length of residence predicted AFC score while among rural seniors, predictors of AFC included educational attainment. To make communities more age-friendly, perspectives of older residents should be sought, shared, and reflected in policy and different strategies and priorities should be developed specific to urban and rural areas.
Ever since China declared its economic reform and opening up policies in the late 1970s, it has been under rapid change. The modernization process of China's history and society was in progress at a pace far too fast in the middle of the 20th century, and housing sector was no exception. This study is based on the houses showing enough changes of modernization process in the rural area, and with a comparative analysis based on the field survey data conducted respectively in the present decade, considered the architectural elements and changing aspects of housing lifestyle. This paper will explore (1) The changes and the status of the members of the village, (2) The changes and the status of the structures, (3) The changes and the status of the main areas of housing, (4) The changes and the status of the heating system and the kitchen that crucially affects the space size among the housing facilities, and (5) The changes and the status of the bathroom. Through this analysis, this paper will firstly look at how traditional rural houses has been changed under the modernization process, and will objectively evaluate the modernization process of the traditional rural houses so that it will help find a way of improving China's rural houses in the future.
This study aims to identify limitations and pending problems after reviewing the overall policies and status of rural Newtown projects, and to seek solutions to its problems. This study targeted the villages of 5 districts, which were developed as rural new-towns after 2009 and included the basic status and progress of the pilot districts. This study conducted a literature review to examine the basic status and progress of the pilot districts, and based on this, analyzed the demand prediction, site selection, project implementation, and housing and amenity facilities of the pilot districts. The study methods included literature reviews, on-site surveys, interviews with village representatives, and consultations with experts. According to the analysis results, a low occupancy rate of the Newtown project districts is because the prediction of occupancy demand was incorrectly completed before implementing the projects. Also, the eligibility for occupancy, such as age restriction and mandatory farming was too strict. Other problems included an absence of income generation support policies for rural returnees, a housing supply policy in disregard of agricultural characteristics, and a lack of understanding of maintenance of communal space, etc.
This study analyzed the types of Rural Villages, divided the areas with six criteria such as geographical environment and selected three target areas to observe them. Through these target areas, it attempted to analyze the difference and correlation of satisfaction with the residential environment depending on the characteristics of the Rural Village. In investigating and analyzing the satisfaction of the residents in the Rural Villages, it divided it into 'satisfaction with rural village life', 'satisfaction with housing' and 'satisfaction with village environment,' and compared and analyzed them with the physical environment of the Rural Village. Based on this, according to the type of local Rural Village, it analyzed with what part there were high relations with resident's satisfaction with the Rural Village. As a result, there was no significant difference between groups by the Rural villages, but residents were more satisfied with the natural environment of the village rather than individual housing. The analysis of the correlation between satisfaction with Rural villages and various factors, the more distance there is between the individual housing and the meeting facility, the lower their satisfaction with the Rural village became. In the future, when a community center or meeting facility is planned, it would heighten the resident's happiness when it is located at the physical center of the village rather than at the entrance of it.
This study has been performed to analyze impacts of urban vs rural residence on later life. In this study, 329 Koreans aged 60 or more were interviewed for their current sociodemographic status and daily life styles. The results are drawn as follows: 1. There is no regional impact on birth order; rate of those born as the first child was not significantly different over regions. 2. For the household composition, the rate of three generations was significantly higher in rural areas than in urban areas. 3. More than 85% of the subjects lived in owned homes in rural areas, while 77% did in urban areas. 4. More than 89% of the subjects lived in single-structured homes in rural areas, while only 45% did in urban areas. The results indicate that in planning public housing for the aged, more social spaces accommodating grandchildren and ownership units need to be allocated for rural facilities. In addition, it is recommended that daily activity schedules need to be differentiated so that rural residents have meals and houseworks earlier than urban residents.
According as the elderly population has been increasing in rural areas, Korea will be facing a serious elderly problem in the near future. To cope with the coming elderly problem, social welfare services and elderly housing need to be carefully prepared. Therefore, I try, in this study, to show the theoretical bases on the residential environment for the elderly households, and to survey and analyze the residential environment and consciousness of them in rural areas. The result of this study will be expected to be a reference to the housing planning for the elderly household in rural areas.
Idleness in rural areas is a very important issue with regard to national land space management. Previous studies have been conducted separately in terms of population housing and farmland. So, an integrated analysis considering population housing and farmland is required for rural spatial management. In this study, vulnerability indices were developed and spatial distribution of the vulnerable areas was analyzed by evaluating regional vulnerability on population, housing, and farmland. In addition, plans for rural space management plan were proposed considering the population hollowing out and the idle farmland. The results of this study would be helpful in preparing policies that take into account the vulnerability of idleness in rural areas.
Shared housing for elderly people, where several elderly people live together, gains attention as a means to prevent the lonely death of elderly people and continuously maintain their social relations. The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics planned through rural and urban areas-residing elderly people's participation in the shared housing spatial composition by area. This study conducted a small scale workshop panel method that targeted small group, but through which extensive information can be acquired, as a qualitative method. This study targeted 16 elderly people aged 65 and over living in rented apartments in rural and urban areas by dividing them two groups by area, namely into four groups. A total of 12 workshop sessions were held with three sessions at a time through a certain time interval. As a result of the study, the elderly people showed positive responses to the shared housing, irrelevant of area. As time went on, the workshop panel method's effect was revealed through consolidated positive attitude and agreement of different opinions. The shared housing for elderly people is valuable as a residential alternative for elderly people, and differentiated supply of the shared housing for elderly people, according to residential area's characteristics, is suggested.
