  • Since FAO introduced the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems(GIAHS) in 2002, 36 sites of 15 countries so far have been listed on GIAHS. This study aims to find the important agricultural heritages of Korea and to prepare the methods for them to be selected as GIAHS. We have analyzed the proposals of the 36 GIAHS listed in order to study the characteristics of their components of the agricultural heritage which worked for being selected. To analyze the components of the agricultural heritage first, agricultural heritage was classified into 13 types and 42 components in light of GIAHS criteria. Then central themes were set to analyze the relevant contents in the proposals. They were, the type of GIAHS Site, significant agricultural landscape, the agriculture-forestry-fisheries-livestock linkage systems, the multi-layered, inter-cropping, circulation cultivation systems, the soil and water management systems, the conservation of agrobiological diversity and genetic resources, the history of the agricultural heritage, the succession of traditional farming techniques, the cultural diversity and so on. Most GIAHS are located in mountains, grasslands, rivers and coasts, desert than in plains, through which GIAHS assure us that it is the heritage of human challenge to overcome the harsh geographic environment and maintain a livelihood. In these sites the traditional farming techniques are carried on, such as mountain clearings, terraced rice paddies, and burn fields, and the unique irrigation systems and agricultural landscapes are well maintained, and the eco-friendly traditional farming techniques utilizing abundant forest resources and agriculture are well handed down. The origin or home of crop growing, a variety of genetic crop storage, the world's largest crop producer and preserving cultural diversity are also important factors for the selection.

First, The study was examined to improve the awareness to improve awareness of the value and preservation of heritage through the designation of agricultural heritage. However, it was found that it was necessary to prepare for social problems such as the aging population in the future. Second, most of the residents' perceptions showed a positive perception of the designation of agricultural heritage, but they were somewhat less recognized in terms of economics, so it was found that regeneration measures were needed to compensate for this. Third, as a result of applying the effect measurement model, the preservation and management effect that meets the purpose of the system is high, and the effect varies depending on projects such as local governments and residents' councils. Fourth, as a result of examining rural regeneration measures through overseas cases, it was found that rather than large-scale development, various cultural and natural resources and activation measures were prepared by expanding the scope to surrounding areas. This study was conducted only on agricultural heritage areas, but it is meaningful that agricultural and rural heritage should be reviewed from various perspectives suitable for the current trend, and it is meaningful in that it considers not only local residents' perception but also regional effects and revitalization measures.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the status of conservation and management of KIAHS(Korea's Important Agricultural Heritage System) by focusing on which of the conceptual and institutional characteristics and stakeholder activities, and to suggest improvement plans. The results were summarized as follows, first, insiders prioritize financial support and participate in plan execution and activities. Second, rural utilization and traditional agricultural succession activities and support are deficient. Third, administrators (intermediary) focuses primarily on KIAHS designation; ordinance enactment, manpower recruitment and other structural considerations are lacking. Fourth, the role of administrators (intermediary) is limited to operational funding and facility management support at the enforcement and activity stage. Fifth, outsiders besides visitors, such as the public or business enterprises, lacked participation methods. For the sustainable KIAHS, municipality must perceive agricultural heritage as a resource and recognize the importance, and treat it accordingly. The establishment of local-led conservation activities and movements must be considered in an enhanced investigation and excavation stage. The complementary policies that ensure continual support from experts from the first investigation and excavation stage to the final monitoring stage are necessary. The standards and regulations are necessary to achieve parity between conservation and maintenance of agricultural heritage, and its utilization.
