In the present study, one of the widely applied equations for gas-solid cyclones, Leith and Licht model, was evaluated based on the 3-D CFD technique. The initial and boundary values of radial position and tangential velocity obtain-ed from the CFD simulation enabled complete calculation of the nonlinear second differential equation. This approach showed about 30% errors between calculations with and without the second order differential term. The calculation by using the simple first order equation presented shorter times to migrate up to the inner wall of the cyclone than by the second order, which theoretically implies higher separation efficiency. Further comparison is now under evaluation in terms of the detailed grade efficiency.
This paper deals with the active vibration control of a simply-supported beam under a Moving mass using fuzzy control technique. Governing equation3 for dynamic responses of the beam under a moving mass are derived by Galerkin's mode summation method. Dynamic responses of the beam are obtained by Runge-Kutta integration method, and are compared with experimental results. For the active vibration control of the beam due to moving mass, a controller based on fuzzy logic was designed. The numerical predictions for dynamic deflections of the beam have a good agreement with the experimental results well. As for the fuzzy control of the tested beam, more than 50% reductions of dynamic deflection and residual vibrations under a moving mass are demonstrated.
A Plankton ecosystem model was developed to investigate effects of hydrodynamic processes including advection and diffusion on size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in the mesohaline zone of the York River estuarine system, Virginia, USA. The model included 12 state variables representing the distribution of carbon and nutrients in the surface mixed layer. Groupings of autotrophs and heterotrophs were based on cell site and ecological hierarchy Forcing functions included incident radiation, temperature, wind stress, mean How and tide which includes advective transport and turbulent mixing. The ecosystem model was developed in FORTRAN using differential equations that were solved using the 4th order Runge-Kutta technique. The model showed that microphytoplankton blooms during winter-spring resulted from a combination of vertical advection and diffusion of phytoplankton cells rather than in-situ production in the lower York River estuary.
We fabricated two HTS closed coils by using resistive-joint method and the joint resistance of the coil was estimated by field decay technique at 77 K. In addition, we used the Runge-kutta method for the numerical analysis to estimate the decay properties. The joint resistances were evaluated as a function of critical current of HTS closed coil and external field strength of excitation coil. It was observed that joint resistance was independent of critical current and external field strength. It was estimated that joint resistance was 8.0$\times$10$^{-9}$$\Omega$ to 11.9$\times$10$^{-9}$$\Omega$ for coils of contact length for 7 cm.
This paper presents the result of a computational study on the wake characteristics of two tanker models, i.e. HSVA and Mystery hull forms. The focus of the study is on the distributions of axial, radial and tangential velocities of the two hull forms in way of the propeller, especially over the propeller disk. The effect of bilge vortices on the velocity distribution is also concerned. For the computation of stern and wake flows of the two hull farms, the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes(RANS) equations are numerically solved by the second order finite difference method, which employs a four stage Runge-Kutta scheme with a residual averaging technique and the Baldwin-Lomax model. The calculated pressure distributions on the hull surface and the axial, radial and tangential velocity distributions over the propeller disk are presented for the two hull forms. Finally, the result of wake analysis for the computed wake distribution over the propeller disk is given in comparison with those for the experimental wake distribution fur the both hull forms.
Dynamic behaviors and stability of an optical disk drive coupled with an automatic ball balancer(ABB) are analyzed by a theoretical approach. The feeding system is modeled a rigid body with six degree-of-freedom. Using Lagrange's equation, we derive the nonlinear equations of motion for a non-autonomous system with respect to the rectangular coordinate. To investigate the dynamic stability of the system in the neighborhood of the equilibrium positions, the monodromy matrix technique is applied to the perturbed equations. On the other hand, time responses are computed by the Runge-Kutta method. We also investigate the effects of the damping coefficient and the position of ABB on the dynamic behaviors of the system.
Three-dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating in circular tube were investigated. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record.
The paper described the nonlinear dynamic motion behavior of a barge equipped with the portable outboard Dynamic Positioning(DP) control system in short-crested waves. The DP system based on the fuzzy theory is applied to control the thrusters to optimally adjust the ship position and heading in waves. In addition to the short-crested waves, the current, wind and nonlinear drifting force are also included in the calculations. The time domain simulations for the six degrees of freedom motions of the barge with the DP system are solved by the $4^{th}$ order Runge-Kutta method. The results show that the position and heading deviations are limited within acceptable ranges based on the present control method. When the dynamic positioning missions are needed, the technique of the alternative portable DP system developed here can serve as a practical tool to assist those ships without equipping with the DP facility.

The Runge-Kutta method of 6th-order has been employed in this paper to analyze the flow of Casson nanofluid along permeable exponentially stretching cylinder. The modeled PDEs are changed into nonlinear ODEs through appropriate nonlinear transformations. The aim of the paper is to investigate the effects of different parameters such as Casson fluid parameter, slip parameter, suction parameter, Prandtl number, Lewis number, Brownian motion parameter, and thermophoresis parameter, with the variation of mass concentration profile. Numerical results are attained using a renowned numerical scheme shooting technique and for the authenticity of present methodlogy, the results are verified with earlier open text.
