  • In this paper the nonlinear free surface flows for an axisymmetric submerged body oscillating beneath the free surface are solved and the forces acting on the body are calculated. A boundary integral method is applied to solve the axisymmetric boundary value problem and the Runge-Kutta 4-th order method is used for the time stepping of the free surface location. The nonlinear forces acting on the axisymmetric body are computed and compared with published results.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that change in speed and modeling methods has on maglevs' runnability. The study constructed equations of motion on 4-DOF, 6DOF, and 10-DOF vehicles respectively and carried out numerical analysis, applying 4th Runge Kutta method, in order to run six different model maglev as changing the vehicles speed on the same bridge that had 2000 to 1 deflection. The analysis revealed that maglev's runnability improved as speed was lower and the specific model had higher number of bogey and EMS.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a system can be critically influenced by system uncertainty, so the dynamic system must be analyzed stochastically in consideration of system uncertainty. This study presents the stochastic model of a nonlinear dynamic system with uncertain parameters under nonstationary stochastic inputs. And this stochastic system is analyzed by a new stochastic process closure method and moment equation method. The first moment equation is numerically evaluated by Runge-Kutta method and the second moment equation is numerically evaluated by stochastic process closure method, 4th cumulant neglect closure method and Runge-Kutta method. But the first and the second moment equations are coupled each other, so this equations are approximately evaluated by a iterative method. Finally the accuracy of the present method is verified by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • After we made the computer source code with mathematical model of Muramatsu et al. that was expressed by the set of simultaneous first-order ordinary differential equations in evaporation-pyrolysis zone of cigarette, we simulated the distribution profiles of temperature and density of flue-cured tobacco. Those equations were solved numerically with the Runge-Kutta-Gill algorithm assuming step size of 0.025mm by Muramatsu at at,, but in this study the advanced algorithm of Runge-Kutta 4th Order assuming step size of 0.0005mm. The initial conditions and physical parameters of Muramatsu et at. were used for solving them. The calculated values corresponded well with results of Muramatsu et al., especially the gradient of the temperature profile increased with smoldering speed and the thickness of the evaporation-pyrolysis zone decreased with increasing of smoldering speed. On the other hand, the temperature gradient decreased with increasing of the effective thermal-conductivity value and the thickness of the evaporation-pyrolysis zone increased with the effective thermal-conductivity value.

  • Automobiles are very important as modern society is developed. Increase of the number of the automobiles cause environmental problem, that is, air pollution. So, many countries are adopting a environmental law. Automobile manufacturing companies have developing methods to prevent air pollution with increase of the efficiency of automotive engines. PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system which is one of them is made by the closed loop that consists of combustion chamber, crankcase, manifold suction tube and manifold. PCV valve is attached on manifold tube to control the flowrate of blowby gas. PCV valve is an important part in this system but it is difficult to design PCV valve which satisfies the required flowrate of blowby gas. In this study, our purpose is to help a PCV valve designer with the development of a design program. We used 4th order Runge-Kutta method and Bernoulli's equation to analyze the spool dynamic motion. By the comparison between our program and experiment, we think that a PCV designer can use our program in their work place.

  • Surface state change of ammunition generated during the storage period increases the surface roughness and this affects the flight of ammunition, but there are no research results quantitatively indicating this. In this study, the drag force for each Mach number of howitzer shells was calculated through CFD to which the surface data of the howitzer shell was applied, and analysis of trajectory was performed using drag force values as an input of the 4th Runge-Kutta method, and the degree of decrease of the maximum range caused by the surface roughness of the howitzer shell was estimated. As a result, it was confirmed that the maximum range of howitzer shell with high surface roughness was 1.12 % shorter than that of howitzer shell without roughness. It was confirmed that the effect of surface roughness on the trajectory is not negligible.

  • Even though there are several Global Navigation Satellite Systems under development, only GPS and GLONASS are currently available for satellite positioning. In this study, GLONASS orbits were predicted from broadcast ephemeris using the 4th-order Runge-Kutta numerical integration. For accuracy validation, predicted orbits were compared with precise ephemeris. The RMS(Root Mean Square) and maximum 3-D errors were 14.3 km and 17.4 km for one-day predictions. In case of 7-day predictions, the RMS and maximum 3-D errors were 15.7 and 40.1 km, respectively. Also, the GLONASS satellite visibility predictions were compared with real observations, and they agree perfectly except for several epochs when the satellite signal was blocked by nearby buildings.

  • A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving cavitating flow was proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem with arbitrary void fraction. The present method with compressibility effects employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. The Jacobian matrix from the inviscid flux of constitute equation is diagonalized analytically and the speed of sound for the two-phase media is derived by eigenvalues. So that the present method is appropriate for the extension of high order upwind schemes based on the characteristic theory. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results of high speed flow phenomena such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and solutions at isothermal condition are provided and discussed.

  • In this study, to analyze the collision behaviors of the bridge super-structure and the vessel which the collision point is located far from its rotation center such as bridge of a vessel and equipments on a barge, the simplified collision model was proposed. The model was configured to denote the mass, stiffness and the nonlinear behaviors of the bridge and the vessel. The nonlinear equation of motions of the proposed model were numerically solved by 4th order Runge-Kutta method. The parametric studies were performed for various collision conditions by the standardized Korean barge vessel in term of barge width, and its effects to the maximum collision load of bridge were analyzed.

  • Large eddy simulation is used to investigate the compressible flow over a open cavity, The sub-grid scale stresses are modeled using the dynamic model. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the sixth order accurate compact finite difference scheme in the space and the 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in the time. The results show a typical flow pattern of the shear layer mode of oscillation over the cavity. The votical disturbances, the roll-up of vorticity, and impingement and scattering of vorticity at the downstream cavity edge can be seen in the shear layer. Predicted acoustic resonant frequency is in good agreement with that of the empirical formula. The mean flow streamlines are nearly horizontal along the mouth of the cavity. The pressure has its minimum value in the vortex core inside the cavity.
