In the present study, a method of performing cavitation erosion test directly on the anodized surface of the rudder model is proposed, not applying ink or paint on its surface. An image processing technique is newly developed to quantitatively evaluate the erosion damages on the rudder model surface after erosion test. The preprocessing saturation image, image smoothing, adaptive hysteresis thresholding and eroded area detection algorithms are in the image processing program. The rudder cavitation erosion tests are conducted in the rudder deflection angle range of 0° to -4°, which is used to maintain a straight course at the highest speed of the targeted navy ship. In the case of the conventional flat-type full-spade rudder currently being used in the target ship, surface erosion can occur on the model rudder surface in the above rudder deflection angle range. The bubble type of cavitation occurs on rudder surface, which is estimated to be the main reason of erosion damage on the rudder surface.
A marine flapped rudder is designed to improve the effective lift generated by the rudder; this also improves the maneuverability of the ship. The flap is a high lift device installed at the trailing edge of the rudder to augment lift. In this paper, the characteristics of a thick flapped rudder are analyzed at a low Reynolds number with various ratios of flap chord length to total chord length and various aspect ratios, based on the computational fluid dynamics technique. The performance of the rudder with respect to lift, drag, and center of pressure are investigated, and the efficient ratio of flap chord length to total chord length and improved aspect ratio are determined. Ed: highlight - or 'superior'. As a case study, the flow on the flapped rudder of an NACA0021 section shape in free stream condition is simulated. The standard k-epsilon turbulence model is used to model the flow around the flapped rudder. The results indicate that the efficient ratio of the flap chord length to total chord length and aspect ratio are 0.3 and 1.4, respectively.
This paper studies on the rudder shapes for the suppression of the cavitation around a horn-type rudder. To improve the problems due to cavitation, there have been several studies. However, these some studies are recognized as incomplete ways to suppress the rudder cavitation. In this study, the section shapes to suppress the cavitation phenomena are determined by moving the location of maximum thickness for reducing the curvature variation and changing the radius of leading edge. Also, in the pintle part, the curvature radius of the inlet outlet edge of rudder plate is changed. During the design of rudder shape, two-dimensional numerical simulations are firstly performed because those offer some advantages with that cavitation phenomena becomes predictable for a short time, and then the three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to confirm the determination. The time mean distribution of the propeller slipstream is imposed on the inlet boundary condition. As some results, this paper shows the effects reducing the range of the occurrence of cavitation, and suggests the references on the design of a horn-type rudder for the suppression of cavitation phenomena.
In these ten years, the cavitation and erosion phenomena in the rudder have been increased for high-speed container ships. The cavitation in the rudder blades which is injurious to rudder efficiency is mainly caused by the main flow with a large angle of attack induced by propellers, and the erosion which occurs as a result of repeated blows by shock wave that cavitation collapse may produce was observed in the gap legion of the rudder. However, gap cavitation is not prone to occur in model experiments because of low Reynolds number. So, the viscous effect should be considered for solving the flow of the narrow gap. In order to predict the cavitation phenomena and to improve the performance of the rudder, the analysis of the viscous flow in the rudder gap is positively necessary. In this study, numerical calculation for the solution of the RANS equation is applied to the two-dimensional flow around the rudder gap including horn part and pintle part. The velocity and pressure field are numerically acquired according to Reynolds number and the case that the round bar is installed in the gap is analyzed. For reduced the acceleration that pressure drop can be highly restrained numerically and in model experiment, the cavitation bubbles can be reduced.
The increasing size and speed of cargo ships result in high speed flow in propeller slipstream, and thereby cavitation is frequently observed on and around a rudder system. Rudder gap cavitation is the most difficult one to control and suppress among various types of the cavitation on a rudder system. In the present study, experiments of the incipient cavitation and pressure measurement were carried out for typical cargo ship rudder sections with and without the suppression devices, which were suggested by the authors. Fundamental understanding of the rudder gap cavitation inception was obtained along with its relevance to the surface pressure distribution. It is confirmed that the gap flow blocking devices effectively suppress the rudder gap cavitation and, at the same time, augment lift.
To improve ship's maneuverability high lift rudders like as Schilling rudder, flap rudder etc. were used. To predict the maneuverability of a ship with flap rudder HPMM tests are carried out. To analyze the test results modular model is used. To use modular model the forces of flap rudder must be measured separately from the hull forces. The flap rudder is made as independent system from the hull. To investigate the simulation results of modular model the tests results are analyzed by whole ship model, and simulated. The compared results of simulation show a good agreement except turning test. The reason is the different analysis result of flap rudder drag forces. From the present study it is possible to analyze HPMM tests of a ship with flap rudder by modular model.
The shape of a conventional full spade rudder has been modified to implement the Coanda effect and consequential changes in the flow characteristics are carefully examined to show the significant enhancement in the lift performance. A preliminary numerical study has been done to identify the optimum configuration of the modified rudder sections. For the purpose, chord wise locations of the jet slit and the radii of the trailing edge were varied in several ways and the changes in the lift characteristics have been observed at the various angles of attack, particularly focusing on the usefulness of the Coanda effect upon delaying the stall or increase in the circulation. Making the most use of the results so attained, full spade rudder of a VLCC has been reformed to realize the Coanda effect. A series of model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the Coanda effect in improving the performance of the modified rudder. It is found that considerable enhancement in the lift performance of the rudder is plausible at any rudder angle if an optimum jet momentum is provided.

In recent practices, a half circular prismatic bar protruding beyond the concave surface of the horn facing the gap has been formed along the centerplane of a rudder to lessen the gap flow between the horn and the movable portion of the rudder system. If a flow through the gap of a rudder is reduced considerably through this approach, previous numerical studies indicate that not only the gap flow but also the rudder cavitation can be noticeably diminished. In the present study, numerical simulations on two-dimensional rudder sections were performed to show that the blocking ability of the single centre bar can be improved by the proper choice of sectional shape. Moreover, a pair of blocking bars attached symmetric to the centerplane on the opposite convex surface of the movable portion is suggested in the study as well, to circumvent the difficulties arising from the practical application of the single centre bars. The bars are placed near the outer edges of the gap easily accessible at the maximum rudder angle to allow simple installation of the device during a maintenance period of a ship. It is found that the pair of blocking bars further improves the blocking effects and application to a practical three-dimensional rudder also backs up the fact.
This paper describes the design of a full-spade twisted rudder section by using the genetic algorithm based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and panel method. The developed propeller- rudder analysis program has been validated by comparing with experimental data. The developed code has been used for the design of a twisted full-spade rudder especially for finding out optimum section. The optimization has been firstly carried out by the genetic algorithm. The more detail variation of a rudder section has been also conducted by changing section profile in more detail to confirm the most optimum section profile. The developed new twisted rudder has been compared with existing twisted rudder by cavitation testing in the cavitation tunnel at MOERI. It is concluded that the developed twisted rudder has a lower cavity in comparison with existing twisted rudder. The verification of efficiency gain is expected to be carried out through self-propulsion tests in the near future.
