Enhancing the properties of rubber, such as the tensile strength, modulus, and wear abrasion, by the addition of carbon black and silica as fillers is very important for improving the performance of rubber products. In this review, we summarize the general features of 'the reinforcement of rubber by fillers' and the equations for representing the reinforcement phenomena. The rubber reinforcement was attributed to enhancement of the following: the rubber, bound rubber, formation of networks, and combination between rubber chains and silica followed by entanglement. The reinforcement capability of silica species with different surface and networked states demonstrated the importance of the connection between the silica particles and the rubber chains in achieving high reinforcement. The model involving combination followed by entanglement can provide a plausible explanation of the reinforcement of rubber by carbon black and silica because the combination facilitates the concentration of rubber chains near the filler particles, and entanglement of the rubber chains around the filler particles enforces the resistance against deformation and breakage of rubber compounds, resulting in high reinforcement.
Earlier studies on hollow-circular rubber bearings, all of which are conducted for steel-reinforced bearings, indicate that the hole presence not only decreases the compression modulus of the bearing but also increases the maximum shear strain developing in the bearing due to compression, both of which are basic design parameters also for fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. This paper presents analytical solutions to the compression problem of hollow-circular fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. The problem is handled using the most-recent formulation of the "pressure method". The analytical solutions are, then, used to investigate the effects of reinforcement flexibility and hole presence on bearing's compression modulus and maximum shear strain in the bearing in view of four key parameters: (i) reinforcement extensibility, (ii) hole size, (iii) bearing's shape factor and (iv) rubber compressibility. It is shown that the compression stiffness of a hollow-circular fiber-reinforced bearing may decrease considerably as reinforcement flexibility and/or hole size increases particularly if the shape factor of the bearing is high and rubber compressibility is not negligible. Numerical studies also show that the existence of even a very small hole can increase the maximum shear strain in the bearing significantly, which has to be considered in the design of such annular bearings.
Tire codes are made of materials such as hemp, cotton, rayon, nylon, steel, polyester, glass, and aramid are fiber reinforcement materials that go inside rubber to increase durability, driveability, and stability of vehicle tires. The reinforcement of the tire cord may construct a composite material using tires such as automobiles, trucks, aircraft, bicycles, and fibrous materials such as electric belts and hoses as reinforcement materials. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the adhesive force between the rubber and the reinforced fiber exhibits the desired physical properties in the rubber composite material made of a rubber matrix with reinforced fibers. This study is a study on the heat treatment conditions for improving the adhesion strength of the tire cord and the reinforced fiber for tires. The core technology of the drying process is a uniform drying technology, which has a great influence on the quality of the reinforcement. Therefore, the uniform airflow distribution is determined by the geometry and operating conditions of the dryer. Therefore, this study carried out a numerical analysis of the shape of a drying nozzle for improving the performance of hot air drying in a dryer used for drying the coated reinforced fibers. In addition, the flow characteristics were examined through numerical analysis of the study on the change in the shape of the chamber affecting drying.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the crosslinking density and reinforcement of rubber compounds with various carbon black loadings, cure systems and cure temperatures. Bound rubber content increased with volume fraction of carbon black in rubber compounds, but total crosslinking density decreased with increasing the bound rubber content. Rate constant of cure reaction was changed significantly by cure system and cure temperature, especially it showed strong dependence on the cure temperature. High activation energys of cure reaction were shown in the rubber compound with high loading of carbon black under EC system and in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black under CC system. High total crosslinking density of vulcanized compounds appeared in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black and CC system among cure systems. Typical change of total crosslinking density by EC system was not shown. The highest elastic constant by Mooney-Rivlin equation was shown in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black and SEC system. Modulus increased as increasing the loading of carbon black in the rubber compounds and showed the order of SEC, CC, and EC system for cure system.
Elastomer-filler interaction in terms of characterization of filler effects was studied using natural rubber(NR) loaded with kaolin fillers modified with sodium polyphosphate and poly(maleic anhydride), respectively. Kaolins modified with sodium polyphosphate or poly(maleic anhydride) show adhering characteristics by Kraus plot. Reinforcement activity according to Cunneen-Russell method is given by those fillers, in which sodium polyphosphate-treated kaolin presents more favorable results than that treated with poly(maleic anhydride) with respect to adhesion constant, reinforcement extent, elastic constant, and crosslink density. When applied to Blanchard's linkage reinforcement theory, NR vulcanizates loaded with kaolin modified with sodium polyphosphate meet the requirements for both approximate linkage reinforcement(${\psi}'$) of 1.02 to 4.94 and accurate linkage reinforcement($\psi$) of 1.00 to 1.18, representing the values of effective wetting($C_{\psi}$) for 0.001 to 0.029 and intrinsic linkage reinforcement(${\psi}_0$) for 1.015 to 1.124, respectively, whille negligible linkage reinforcement is shown by NR vulcanizates loaded with kaolin treated with poly(maleic anhydride). Dynamic storage modulus(G') given by surface modified kaolins presents more favorable crosslink density rates of $2.260{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$. for sodium polyphosphate treated kaolin and $1.305{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$. for poly(maleic anhydride) treated kaolin, respectively, compared to untreated kaolin showing the rate of $1.033{\times}10^{-5}\;mole/cm^3-min$.
Rubber reinforcing carbon black N330 was treated by physical activation under $CO_2$ to different degrees of burn-off. The mechanical properties indicating the reinforcement of SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) vulcanizates filled by activated carbon blacks, such as tensile strength, modulus at 300% strain and elongation at break were determined. During $CO_2$ activation of fresh carbon blacks, the development of microporous structure caused an increase of extremely large specific surface area and the porosity turned out to be an increasing function of the degree of burn-off. The tensile strength and modulus at 300% of activated carbon blacks filled rubber composites were improved at lower loading ratios of 20 and 30 phr, but decreased drastically after 30 phr, which is considered that it might be difficult to get a fully dispersed rubber mixture at higher loading ratios for fillers having very large specific surface areas. However, the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of SBR rubber composites having activated carbon black at 74% yield were improved at a large extent when compared to those having raw carbon black and increased significantly as a function of increasing loading ratio.

This study proposes an RCS composite damping device that can achieve seismic reinforcement of existing buildings by dissipating energy by inelastic deformation. A series of experiments assessing the performances of the rubber core pad, hysteretic steel slit damping device, and hybrid RCS damping device were conducted. The results showed that the ratios of the deviations to the mean values satisfied the domestic damping-device conformity condition for the load at maximum device displacement in each direction, at the maximum force and minimum force at zero displacement, as well as the hysteresis curve area. In addition, three analysis models based on load-displacement characteristics were proposed for application to seismic reinforcement design. In addition, the validity of the three proposed models was confirmed, as they simulated the experimental results well. Meanwhile, as the shear deformation of the rubber-core pad increased, the hysteretic behavior of super-elasticity greatly increased the horizontal force of the damping device. Therefore, limiting the allowable displacement during design is deemed to be necessary.
In order to investigate the physical properties of rubber blend compound, this experiment was carried out on the cure rate, loss tangent, reinforcement and abrasion properties of S-SBR (solution styrene-butadiene rubber) blends containing silane coupled silica and E-SBR (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber) blends containing carbon black as a model compound. E-SBR blend showed the highest total bound rubber(TBR), while S-SBR blends showed constant TBR level regardless of rubber type. Rapid cure rate was achieved when the styrene and vinyl content of rubber microstructure decreased and TBR content of rubber compounds increased. The modulus as the index of rubber reinforcement showed the linear relation with TBR content. The large amount of PICO loss was observed when the styrene and vinyl content of rubber microstructure increased, while the small amount of PICO loss was observed when the ratio of bu-tadiene increased in the S-SBR blends with silane copuled silica. The high loss tangent at $0^{\circ}C$, the low loss tangent at $60^{\circ}C$, and the large difference of loss tangent were shown in the S-SBR blends with high styrene content compared to E-SBR blend.
The reinforcement of Inorganic filler silica treated with LBR-MDI In SBR vulcanizates were Investigated. The inorganic filler silica treated with MDI on unmodified surface and that of silica treated by MDI was retreated with LBR. The charateristics of vulcanization, physical properties, surface properites and dynamic properties were investigated after mixing those silica with SBR and unmodified silica with SBR. Rheometric studies of the vulcanization showed that S-series has fast scorch $time(t_{10})$ and an optimum cure $time(t_{90})$ in the SBR compounds. And it was turned out that SBR vulcanizates compounded with LBR treated silica was better than any other componnds in hardness, tensile strenght, 100 300% modula and elongation. We could confirm that urea bonding is formed from IR spectrum. We concluded that L-series shows the best reinforcement effect in SBR vulcanizates.
Crosslink density of a rubber vulcanizate determines the chemical and physical properties, while bound rubber is an important factor to estimate reinforcement of a filled rubber compound. Extender oil is added to a raw rubber with very high molecular weight for improving processability of a rubber composite. Influence of extender oil on crosslink density, bound rubber formation, and physical properties of solution styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) composites with differing microstructures was investigated. Crosslink densities of non-oil-extended SSBR (NO-SSBR) vulcanizates were higher than those of oil-extended SSBR (OE-SSBR) ones. Bound rubber contents of NO-SSBR compounds were also greater than those of OE-SSBR ones. The experimental results could be explained by interfering of extender oil. The OE-SSBR vulcanizates had low modulus but long elongation at break, whereas the NO-SSBR ones had high modulus but short elongation at break. It was found that the crosslink densities affected the physical properties more than the bound rubber contents. The moduli increased with increase in the crosslink density irrespective of extender oil, while the elongation at break decreased. Each variation of the tensile strengths of NO-SSBR and OE-SSBR vulcanizates with the crosslink density showed a decreasing trend. Tear strength of the OE-SSBR vulcanizate increased with increase in the crosslink density, whereas variation of the tear strength of NO-SSBR vulcanizate with the crosslink density showed a weak decreasing trend.
