  • These days, recycling of plastic material has become a major issue due to the landfills and environmental problem. This study investigates the fluidity of thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV), which can be used for an automobile part such as a weather strip, in order to replace ethylene propylene rubber(EPDM). Injection molding experiments with the spiral flow test mold and panel cover mold are conducted to examine the fluidity of TPV during injection molding. It is found out that the recycled TPV's flow length is a little bit longer than the virgin TPV. However, the filling weight for a panel cover parts by a recycled TPV is almost the same as that by a virgin TPV.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) tire cord has relatively lower adhesion properties caused by limited reacting sites. In order to improve the adhesion force between PET tire cord and rubber, an additional process to activate surface of PET has been employed. Atmospheric plasma was used to substitute the chemical finishing process of PET tire cord as a green dipping process. Contact angle was measured to confirm surface change of PET after plasma treatment. The treated PET tire cords with/without resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex(RFL) and unvulcanized rubber were vulcanized in a testing mold at $160^{\circ}C$. After atmospheric plasma treatment of PET tire cord, adhesion force was somewhat increased under some conditions.

  • Manufacturing processes of industrial tire are composed of mixing, extrusion, curing, trimming and inspecting. Among them curing is the most important process in the production of industrial tire. In this study the newly developed spring vent system was designed in order to solve rubber intrusion problem inside spring vent system in the curing process. After the experiment it is concluded that rubber intrusion was caused by angled stem head part. New spring vent system was manufactured and new design of spring vent system is proper to use for industrial tire curing process.

  • Thermoplastic elastomer(TPE) can be recycled and molded such as commercial thermoplastic. Therefore TPE has being widely applied on automobile, household and etc. in these days. This study shows the variation of mechanical properties and shrinkage on TPE moldings for variation of injection molding conditions such as injection pressure, holding pressure, melt temperature, mold temperature and etc. Mechanical properties in relation to tensile strength, hardness and shrinkage in connection with precision dimension of part are investigated. The tensile strength and shrinkage of the experimental TPEs are mainly influenced by injection pressure and melt temperature. All injection molding conditions scarcely affect on hardness. To verify the variation of tensile strength and shrinkage, morphology of TPE molding was scanned by the SEM. The morphology showed that as the melt temperature increased, the rubber particles on the TPE became smaller and widely were dispersed. This behavior of rubber particles influenced on the increase of tensile strength.

  • It was attempted to develop an auto part by over molding injection mold that produces precision products in high productivity with use of an eco-friendly TPE substitute material for NBR. NBR is currently used in motor gear cover, one of the key parts in motor module for auto doors. Gear cover is composed of plastics and rubber mostly today, which requires a two (2) step process for production using two presses of different types. A hot press is used at this time for forming the rubber, which has drawback of requiring a rather long forming time of 400 seconds for one forming process. Even though this difficulty is overcome by reducing production time through employment of multi-cavity molds, time for forming process must be shortened for improvement of the productivity eventually, and the existing method of insert injection for products that have been formed with plastic material must be outgrown. In this point of view, over molding injection using TPE has a big advantage. Forming time is shortened to 54 seconds, and working the two (2) processes in series by one (1) press could solve the durability problem caused by deflection of the plastics, not to mention shortening the process time. Enhancement of productivity by almost 80% and improvement in the accuracy of the product could thus be achieved.

  • In multi-material injection molding, since two or more materials with different process conditions are used, it is essential to maximize process efficiency by operating the cooling or heating system to a minimum. In this study, Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) that can be cured at a low temperature suitable for the multi-material injection molding was selected and the cure behavior according to the process conditions was analyzed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Dynamic measurement results of DSC with different heating rate were obtained, and through this, the total heat of reaction when the LSR was completely cured was calculated. Isothermal measurement results of DSC were derived for 60 minutes at each temperature from 80 ℃ to 110 ℃ at 10 ℃ intervals, and the final degree of cure at each temperature was calculated based on the total heat of reaction identified from the Dynamic DSC measurement results. As the result, it was found that when the temperature is lowered, the curing start time and the time required for the curing reaction increase, but at a temperature of 90 ℃ or higher, LSR can secure a degree of cure of 80% or more. However, at 80 ℃., it was found that not only had a relatively low degree of curing of about 60%, but also significantly increased the curing start time. In addition, in the case of 110 ℃, the parameters were derived from experimental result using the Kamal kinetic model.

  • Liquid silicon rubber (LSR) has fine thermal compatibility and is widely used in various fields such as medical care and automobiles because it is easy to implement products with good fluidity. With the recent development of flexible sensors, the focus has been on manufacturing conductive elastomers, such as silicone as elastic materials, and carbon black, CNT, and graphene are mainly used as nanomaterials that impart conductive phases. In this study, mechanical behavior and curing behavior were measured and analyzed to manufacture a CB-LSR complex by adding Carbon Black to LSR and to identify properties. As a result of the compression test, the elastic modulus tended to increase as carbon black was added. When the swelling test and the compression set test were conducted, the swelling rate tended to decrease as the content of carbon black increased, and the compression set tended to increase. In addition, DSC measurements showed that the total amount of reaction heat increased slightly as the carbon black content increased. It is considered that carbon black was involved in the crosslinking of LSR to increase the crosslinking density and have a positive effect on oil resistance reinforcement.

  • OBJECTIVES : In this study, microstructural components of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder were investigated using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). To clearly understand the elemental composition of the CRMA binder, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was employed on the ESEM samples. METHODS : CRMA binders were produced using open blade mixers at $177^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The binders were artificially aged through a series of accelerated aging processes. Sample preparation was done by making a mold shape on the glass slide. Thereafter, the morphology of the CRMA binder was observed using the ESEM coupled with the EDX. RESULTS : The images captured from the ESEM indicate that the unaged CRMA binder appears to have a single-phase continuous nonuniform structure after the addition of crumb rubber particles, whereas the artificially aged CRMA binder was observed to have two different phases. ESEM coupled with EDX shows detailed internal structure of the modified binders compared to other technologies (i.e., optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and conventional scanning electron microscope). CONCLUSIONS : The captured images resemble the internal structures such as the viscous properties of the unaged CRMA binder and the interaction between the rubber particles and the base binder at aged condition. ESEM is a powerful instrument and with the introduction of EDX, it provided more details of the network microstructure of the asphalt binder. ESEM coupled with EDX is recommended for use in future investigation of microstructure of asphalt binders.

  • The neodymium magnet inserted mold was proposed to orient magneto-responsible particles efficiently. The anisotropic magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE) was prepared using the new mold and the optimum amounts of the particles was 30 vol.%. As the orientation of particles was increased, the tensile strength of MRE was decreased, while the hardness of MRE was increased. It was found that the MRE containing 30 vol.% of magneto-responsible particles showed the maximum magneto-rheological effect. The ratio of shear modulus shift was 59% at the input current of 3 A. The transmissibility of MRE was decreased with increasing the input current and loading amounts of magneto-responsible particles. Therefore, the damping property of MRE could be improved by preparing the anisotropic MRE.
