  • The history of polyurethane is relatively shorter compared to that of the other polymers, though its importance has grown rapidly. Due to its unique properties, polyurethanes are widely applied in various fields. In particular, the automotive industry is one of the important application fields. To date, polyols and isocyanates used in the polyurethane industry are generally of petrochemical origin. Recently, owing to the oil crisis, legislation, and growing awareness towards environmental preservation, the demand for more sustainable and eco-friendly raw materials has increased. In this paper, the latest research and development trends in polyurethane applications were reviewed, with a focus on the automobile industry in areas such as seat comfort, noise reduction, light weight, biomass-based polyurethane, and recycling.

  • In our country, the housing materials of polymeric outdoor insulators have mainly been used EPDM or silicone rubber. EPDM housing materials had been widely used in the field for the first time. The reason why silicone has the high cost of production. But recently, most of the manufacturers that newly developed polymeric insulators make its choice of silicone housing. EPDM showed a good resistance to tracking. We compared the various characteristics for EPDM and silicone insulators that have similar type and design. Silicone insulators have more performance in flashover voltage test and leakage current measurement because of a good water repellent than EPDM ones. Also, the property of EPDM compared with silicone insulators greatly decreased after aging test in combined acceleration ageing facilities for 1000 hours.

  • This paper presents the development of a new Adaptive Tuned Dynamic Vibration Absorber (ATDVA) working with magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The MRE materials were fabricated by mixing carbonyl iron particles with silicone rubber and cured under a strong magnetic field. An ATDVA prototype using MRE as an adaptable spring was designed and manufactured. The MRE ATDVA worked in a shear mode and the magnetic field was generated by a magnetic circuit and controlled through a DC power supply. The dynamic performances or the system transmissibility at various magnetic fields of the absorber were measured by using a vibration testing system. Experimental results indicated that this absorber can change its natural frequency from 35Hz to 90Hz, 150% of its basic natural frequency. A real time control logic is proposed to evaluate the control effect. The simulation results indicate that the control effect of MRE ATDVA can be improved significantly.

  • Functionally graded polyurethane elastomers PUEs/grad. Poly(dimethylammoninum ethylacrylate bromide)(PDMAEA) were prepared by the method of electrophoresis. Results of elemental analysis showed that concentration of PDMAEA had gradient across the thickness(2mm) of the base PUEs. The modified PUEs(PUEs/grad. PDMAEA) containing high concentration of PDMAEA displayed low degree of swelling in benzene which was poor solvent for PDMAEA, and high degree of swelling in water which was good solvent. For the each layer of modified PUEs, glass transition temperature, dynamic storage modulus were stooled by DSC, Rheovibron DDV-IIC dynamic viscoelastomer. The chemomechanical properties of modified PUEs was explored by the electric-stimulus.

  • XLPE cable accessories are mainly consisted by the combination of various insulating materials such as XLPE cable insulation, rubber, epoxy, etc. It is important to investigate the dielectric and breakdown characteristics of the interfaces between various insulating materials. In this paper, by testing and measuring the breakdown strength, dissipation factor, volume and surface resistance and conduction current of specimens, we report the dielectric and breakdown characteristics of interfaces between various insulating materials.

  • Screw rotors are core parts of screw type air compressors, compressors in refrigerating machines and super chargers of automobiles etc. They are composed of a female and a male rotors which have complex section profiles and helically swept geometry. Screw type compressors have advantages of low noise, high efficiency, less needs in maintenance etc. Usually, machining process of screw rotors requires long machining time using CNC machine designed only for screw rotors, which increase the cost of production. In this work, the screw rotors for air-compressors were manufactured with fiber reinforced epoxy composite materials by resin transfer molding process. The mold for the RTM process was made of aluminum and silicon rubber and was designed for release of helical shape products. Composite screw rotors, manufactured by RTM process, have advantages of lightweight, less cost of production, good characteristics of vibration etc.

  • Resilient materials are generally used for the floating floors to reduce the floor impact sound. Dynamic stiffness of resilient material, which has the most to do with the floor impact sound reduction. The resilient materials available in Korea include EPS (Styrofoam), recycled urethane types, EVA (Ethylene Vinylacetate) foam rubber, foam PE (Polyethylene), glass fiber & rock wool, recycled tire, foam polypropylene, compressed polyester, and other synthetic materials. In this study, we tested floor impact sound reduction characteristic to a lot of kinds of resilient material. The result of test showed that the amount of the Light-weight impact sound reduction appeared by being influenced from this dynamic stiffness of resilient material. As the decreasing dynamic stiffness of resilient material, the impact sound reduction amount is increased, especially in the low frequency domain.

  • It is mainly due to the toxic gases, produced from the material combustion, threatens human body in case of urban railway car like subway which passes through underground tunnel. In the field of railway industry, fire accidents was not frequent but occurs in each country and, the causes was investigated. The advanced country established the test standard (e.g., BS, EN) to measure the toxic gases quantitatively and, have applied to enhance the fire safety of railway car. We must also follow the procedures to use gangway material for railway car as stated the Safety regulation for the urban railway car. In this study, various gangway materials(silicon, synthtic rubber, soaltapulin) are used to investigate element of toxic gases when the fire occurs. The amount of toxic gases measured from the ISO 5659 chamber using cone heater was measured and compared the results for each materials.

  • Lactide oligomer with number averagae molecular weight of 460 was synthesized and reacted with poly(oxyteramethylene)glycol(PTMG, Mn = 650) to obtain oligolactide oligomer-terminated PTMG. Polyurethanes were synthesized from the oligolactide-terminated PTMG, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol. The mechanical and thermal properties of the polyurethanes and PTMG based polyurethane as control were measured by means of DSC and tensile tester. Degradation behavior of these polyurethanes put into a compost was evaluated by variation of mechanical properties, surface state, and weight loss. Modulus and weight significantly decreased with increasing time. The surface of the oligolactide polyurethane put into the compost during 6 weeks had a number of voids. On the other hand, These properties of the PTMG based polyurethane as control did not change. These results suggest that the novel polyurethanes incorporated oligolactide easily degrade under biodegradable condition.
