  • The Chugudae is a pedestal for the Chugugi. While many Chugudae were made during the Joseon Dynasty period, seven remained in existence until the early 20th century. Only five of them remain to this day-Gwansanggam (Royal Office of Astronomy and Meteorology), the Seonhwadang in Daegu, the Changdeok Palace, Tongyeong, and Yeongyeongdang. The Changdeok Palace Chugudae is the only existing model made not only as a meteorological instrument but also as a memorial statue. It has been a challenge to decipher 41 of the 368 characters in 'Chugugi-myeong (The title of the inscriptions on the Changdeok Palace Chugudae)' as these had been eroded. However, the interpretation of the full text of 'Chugugi-myeong' became possible thanks to the "Cheoljae Jinjeok (澈齋眞蹟)" which was discovered through this study. The key sentences of the 'Chugugi-myeong' include the reason for creation, the size and functions of the Chugugi and a eulogy to the reigns of King Sejong, Youngjo and Jeongjo. Moreover, its splendid design is worthy of further study. To conclude its true meaning and value, the Changdeok Palace Chugudae requires a more extensive investigation from the viewpoint of an art history.

  • This study was aimed at analyzing the location and topology of the 'Gungmyo(宮廟)' and in Hanyang Doseong(漢陽都城) during 18th and 19th century. Based on the changes of royal processions(行幸) which had been done between the Gungmyo and the Palace, the Gungmyo can be a barometer of cognition where the city center was. Hanyang Doseong was the the capital of Joseon(朝鮮) which had established by king Taejo(太祖). The city had been organized with Gyeongbok-gung(景福宮) as the center. However, after the Imjin War(1592), Gyeongbok-gung was destroyed and urban space was reorganized with Changduk-gung(昌德宮) which reconstructed first. As most kings in late Joseon dynasty had mainly stayed in Changduk-gung, lots of Gungmyos where a memorial service for king's relatives had been held were established in and around the palace and the frequency of visiting the Gungmyo varied by political purpose. Therefore, the location of the Gungmyo and the rounte of parade were important to impress on the center of urban space. In 18th century, lots of King's procession had been done with Changduk-gung as departure point. The king used to start from Donwha-mun(敦化門), and the routes included main street around Changduk-gung. It shows that the urban center focused on the east of the city. On the other hand, when the king lived in Kyeonghee-gung(慶熙宮), a secondary palace in late Joseon dynasty, the parade started from Hungwha-mun(興化門) and the urban center was expended to the west. Since Gyeongbok-gung had reconstructed in 1865, recognition scheme of urban space had changed from Changduk-gung to Gyeongbok-gung as the center. When the Gungmyo relocated western side of Gyeongbok-gung, spatial proximity of the palace and relation with facilities around downtown fed into changing the route of king's parade.

  • Foreign Reception Hall in Gyeongungung Palace was constructed during 1899-1902 according to Yesigjangjeong (禮式章程), Korean Empire's modern diplomatic protocol. This bulilding is a case worthy of notice, because its construction process was written in Jubon(奏本), Korean Empire's official document. Yesigjangjeong(禮式章程) regulates the process of diplomat's audience with Emperor Gojong. The process suggested that Foreign Reception Hall was designed as the place of the end as well as the beginning for audience. According to the process, diplomat came through main gate, Daehanmun and outer gate of main hall(Junghwajeon Hall, Audience Hall), then arrived at the stair to Foreign Reception Hall. After waiting time in the hall, he was going to be granted an audience with Emperor. And he exited through Foreign Reception Hall as the reverse way. This hall was constructed as western-style. Subcontracted carpenters and wood sculptors and laborers from China represents that chinese workers were prevailed in the government construction at that time. And modern building materials, such as glass, colored brick, sanitary wares and lightings were applied, which showed the new landscape in the middle of Gyeongungung Palace. Above all, official documents related with this hall reveals Korean Empire supervised this construction for diplomatic protocol. That is the identity of western-style buildings in Gyeongungung Palace.

  • The research follows several steps. First, the chinese 'WangSung' and 'KungSi' System are verified positively. Next, the structure of palace in Choson Dynasty is deduced based on those chinese systems. Finally, the common system that is also applied in other government-operated spaces is found. The result can be summarized as follows. It is clarified from reviewing the chinese 'WangSung' and 'KungSil' Systems that the 'OyoiCho' is located in 'WhangSung(the imperial city) but out of' KungSung(the palace). Therefore, the research points out that all sort of theories explaining the 'OyoiCho' of Choson Dynasty is a space of 'in-place' are false. The palace system of Choson dynasty seeks the substantiality grounded on the substantial function of 'SamCho(three spaces)' rather than its strict principle dividing main spaces by several doors-'KungMoon' Moreover, it is also certified that the 'ChonChoHooChim' system, literally the political court is located at the front and the private section is at the other(back) side, is directly applied on the palace of Choson Dynasty. This idea has been developed into 'inner and outer' concept and repressed in palace as the 'OyoiChon(outer palace) and NaeChon(inner palace)' concept. conclusion, the research suggests that the dual concept in space such as 'ChonHoo(front and back) and 'NaeOyoi(inner and outer)' basically comes from 'Eum Yang' theory and influences in building other government-operated spaces: for example 'ChongMyo(the royal ancestors shrine)', 'SoWon(a private school of Choson dynasty), 'HyangKyo(a local school annexed to the Confucian shrine)' and 'KwanAh(a governmet agency)'

  • Kyujang-gak was an institution established by the King Jungjo's order to enshrine and edit the royal writings and autographs, and to help the revival of learning with more active services in collection, control, and use of the important materials. Furthermore, it was aimed in its establishment to promote the settlement of an innovative and ideal Royal Regime. In this paper, the Outer Kyujang-gak(外奎章閣) of Kangwha Magistracy(江華府), which was one of the lower branches of the Kyujanggak(奎章閣), will be treated, especially about its details of establishment, location, functions, the characteristics and value of its collection. After the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, the Historical Deposit Library(史庫) was established at the Kangwha Magistracy to take custody of the royal writings and autographs. An Annex(別庫) was built near by the Historical Deposit Library to enlarge the space in the reign of the King Hyojong. These spaces, however, become insufficient as the amount of materials deposited expanded, and custody for them was also not successful. Therefore, at the April of the 6th year of the King Jungjo's rule, the Outer Kyujang-gak was built at the east of the Temporary Palace(行宮) within Kangwha Magistracy, where the royal materials were deposited. This Outer Kynjang-gak was also called 'Kangdo Oe-gak(江都外閣)', 'Kyujang Oe-gak(奎章外閣)' or 'Simdo Oe-gak(心都外閣)', and its major function was to take custody of the materials and to hand them down to the next generations forever. The Kandwha Magistrate(江華留守) was responsible for the management of the Outer Kyujang-gak. Regular events for the book keeping were enshrinement, inventory and airing. In the 6th year in the reign of the King Jungjo, 4,892 volumes consisting of 762 titles were moved here from the Bon-gmodang(奉謨堂), the Seoseo(西序) in Main Palace, the Annex(別庫), the Deposit Library(史庫) mentioned above, the Kaegsa(客舍) and Chaeg-go(冊庫) within Kangwha Magistracy. By the end of the Joseon Dynasty, through fourteen times of addition altogether, the number of collection enshrined here reached 6,400 volumes consisting of 1,212 titles. The significance of this Outer Kyujang-gak established at the Kangwha Magistracy is in the point that this was one of the most important deopsit libraries of the Joseon Dynasty.

  • Three buildings -Jibokjae, Hyubgildang and Palujung- are connected each other and consist of a library and reception complex for royal kings at Kyungbok Palace in Seoul. Jibokjae and Hyubgildang were known to have been moved from Changdok Palace in A.D. 1891. No construction records have been known for Palujung. In 2004, during repair of three buildings, a dendrochronological analysis was conducted to examine their building histories. We took 67 wood samples for dendrochronological analysis; 20 from Jibokjae, 37 Hyubgildang and 10 Palujung, respectively. The results showed that the felling dates of Jibokjae and Hyubgildang woods were A.D. 1877-1879/1880, indicating original construction of two buildings at early 1880s. Felling dates of Palujung were 1886-1889/1890, those of roof filling timbers 1890 and the connection part between Hyubgildang and Jibokjae 1886, confirming 1891's movement of Hyubgildang and Jibokjae and adding a new building, Palujung.
