A rotational torque calibration system is developed to measure rotational torque of power generating systems and to calibrate non-contact rotational torque measurement systems. The maximum capacity of the developed system is 4.5 N-m. It is composed of a DC motor, a DC generator, a control system, a master torque cell, a slip ling/brush set, supporters, a bed etc. The control system is characterized by the closed-loop control with differential intergrator. Rotational torque measurement test and unit response test are conducted to estimate the accuracy of the developed system. It is found that system maintain high consistency and accuracy with the maximum error of 0.25%, Therefore the developed system can be used to measure the rotational torque of power generating systems and to calibrate non-contact rotational torque measurement systems.

This paper presents manufacturing and evaluation of a non-contact rotational torque measurement system which consists of torque cell, telemeter system, transmitter and receiver coil, transmitter, receiver and telemeter indicator. Static calibration test results show that the system has a maximum uncertaintry of 05% or less. A standar calibration system for rotational torque is used to evaluate the measurement system, As a result, the maximum uncertainty for measuring rotational torque by this system is 2% or less. We may conclude that the measurement system is sufficient to measure rotational torque of shaft in industry.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of specific head positions on the mandibular rotational torque movements in maximum mouth opening, protrusion and lateral excursion. Thirty dental students without any sign or symptom of temporomandibular disorders(TMDs) were included as a control group and 90 patients with TMDs were selected and examined by routine diagnostic procedure for TMDs including radiographs and were classified into 3 subgroups : disc displacement with reduction, disc displacement without reduction, and degenerative joint disease. Mandibular rotational torque movements were observed in four head postures: upright head posture(NHP), upward head posture(UHP), downward head posture(DHP), and forward head posture(FHP). For UHP, the head was inclined 30 degrees upward: for DHP, the head was inclined 30 degrees downward: for FHP, the head was positioned 4cm forward. These positions were adjusted with the use of cervical range-of-motion instrumentation(CROM, Performance Attainment Inc., St. Paul, U.S.A.). Mandibular rotational torque movements were monitored with the Rotate program of BioPAK system (Bioresearch Inc., WI, U.S.A.). The rotational torque movements in frontal and horizontal plane during mandibular border movement were recorded with two parameters: frontal rotational torque angle and horizontal rotational torque angle. The data obtained was analyzed by the SAS/Stat program. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The control group showed significantly larger mandibular rotational angles in UHP than those in DHP and FHP during maximum mouth opening in both frontal and horizontal planes. Disc displacement with reduction group showed significantly larger mandibular rotational angles in DHP and FHP than those in NHP during lateral excursion to the affected and non-affected sides in both frontal and horizontal planes(p<0.05). 2. Disc displacement without reduction group showed significantly larger mandibular rotational angles in FHP than those in any other head postures during maximum mouth opening as well as lateral excursion to the affected and non-affected sides in both frontal and horizontal planes. Degenerative joint disease group showed significantly larger mandibular rotational angles in FHP than those in any other head postures during maximum mouth opening, protrusion and lateral excursion in both frontal and horizontal planes(p<0.05). 3. In NHP, mandibular rotational angle of the control group was significantly larger than that of any other patient subgroups. Mandibular rotational angle of disc displacement with reduction group was significantly larger than that of disc displacement without reduction group during maximum mouth opening in the frontal plane. Mandibular rotational angle of disc displacement without reduction group was significantly larger than that of disc displacement with reduction group or degenerative joint disease group during maximum mouth opening in the horizontal plane(p<0.05). 4. In NHP, mandibular rotational angles of disc displacement without reduction group were significantly larger than those of the control group or disc displacement with reduction group during lateral excursion to the affected side in both frontal and horizontal planes. Mandibular rotational angle of disc displacement without reduction group was significantly smaller than that of the control group during lateral excursion to the non-affected side in frontal plane. Mandibular rotational angle of disc displacement without reduction group was significantly larger than that of disc displacement with reduction group during lateral excursion to the non-affected side in the horizontal plane(p<0.05). 5. In NHP, mandibular rotational angle of the control group was significantly smaller than that of disc displacement with reduction group or disc displacement without reduction group during protrusion in the frontal plane. Mandibular rotational angle of disc displacement without reduction group was significantly larger than that of the disc displacement with reduction group or degenerative joint disease group during protrusion in the horizontal plane. Mandibular rotational angle of the control group was significantly smaller than that of disc displacement without reduction group or degenerative joint disease group during protrusion in the horizontal plane(p<0.05). 6. In NHP, disc displacement without reduction group and degenerative joint disease group showed significantly larger mandibular rotational angles during lateral excursion to the affected side than during lateral excursion to the non-affected side in both frontal and horizontal planes(p<0.05). The findings indicate that changes in head posture can influence mandibular rotational torque movements. The more advanced state is a progressive stage of TMDs, the more influenced by FHP are mandibular rotational torque movements of the patients with TMDs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the magnitude of mandibular rotational torque movements in subjects with TMJ sounds, and to analyse correlation between quantitative characteristics of TMJ sounds and mandibular rotational torque movement. Twenty dental college students with TMJ clicking and twenty students without any TMD signs and symptoms were examined by mean of SonoPak and Rotate program of BioPAK system(Bioresearch Inc. MilWaukee, wisconsin, USA) in this study. Mandibular rotational torque movements were recorded and analysed during maximum mouth opening, protrusion, and lateral excursion in frontal and horizontal planes. The obtained results were as follows: 1. On maximum mouth opening, mandibular rotational angle and distance of clicking group were significantly greater than those of control group in frontal plane. (P<0.05). 2. During maximum mouth opening closing, maximum mandibular rotational angle and distance of clicking group were significantly greater than those of control group in frontal plane. (P<0.01). 3. On protrusion, mandibular rotational angle and distance of clickin group were significantly greater than those of control group in horizontal plane. (P<0.05). 4. On lateral excursion, there was no significant difference in mandibular rotational angle and distance between clicking group and control group in frontal and horizontal planes. 5. There were significant correlations between peak amplitude of TMJ sounds and maximum mandibular rotational distance during maximum mouth opening (r=-.481) and mandibular rotational distance on maximum mouth opening (r=-.455) in horizontal plane. 6. There were significant correlations between Above 300/(0-300)Hz ratio of TMJ sounds and mandibular rotational angle (r=-.499) and distance (r=-.457) on maximum mouth opening in frontal plane.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Implant drivers are getting popular in clinical dentistry. Unlike to implant systems with external hex connection, implant drivers directly engage the implant/abutment interface. The deformation of the implant/abutment interface can be introduced while placing an implant with its implant driver in clinical situations. PURPOSE. This study evaluated the change of rotational freedom between an implant and its abutment after application of different insertion torques. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Three kinds of internal connection implants were utilized for the current study($4.5{\times}12\;mm$ Xive, $4.3{\times}11.5\;mm$ Inplant Magicgrip, $4.3{\times}12\;mm$ Implantium MF). An EstheticBase, a 2-piece top, a Dual abutment was used for its corresponding implant system. The rotational freedom between an implant and its abutment were measured before and after applying 45, 100 Ncm insertion torque. Repeated measures ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS. Under 45 Ncm insertion torque, the rotational freedom between an implant and its abutment was significantly increased in Xive(P = .003). However, no significant change was noted in Inplant Magicgrip and Implantium MF. Under 100 Ncm torque, both in Xive(P = .0005) and Implatium MF(P = .03) resulted in significantly increased rotational freedom between the implant and its abutment. DISCUSSION. The design of the implant/implant driver interface effectively prevented the deformation of implant/abutment interface. Little change was noted in the rotational freedom between an implant and its abutment, even though the insertion torque was far beyond clinical application. CONCLUSIONS. The implant/abutment joint of internally connecting implants were quite stable under insertion torque in clinical situation.
The author performed this study to investige the relationship between condylar movements recorded with Pantronicⓡ and mandibular rotational torque movements with BioEGNⓡ. For this study 56 patients with Temporomandibular disorders(TMD) and 30 dental students without any masticatory signs and symptoms were selected as patients group and control group, respectively. The items recorded with Pantronicⓡ(Denar Corp., USA) were immediate side-shift, progressive side-shift, angle of orbiting path, protrusive path and PRI. BioEGNⓡ(Bioelectric gnathography, Bioresearch Inc., USA) were used to measure the amounts of mandibular rotational torque movements in frontal and horizontal plane, and the distance of mandibular translation at incisal area. Amount of mandibular rotational torque movement depicted between the condyles was automatically analysed by angle and difference in frontal and horizontal plane. The obtained data were processed with SAS program and the conclusion of this study were as follows : 1. Mean values of items between patients group and control group in Pantronic measurements were not significantly different except in left protrusive path and in Pantronic Reproducibility Index(PRI). There were no significant difference of condylar paths by preferred chewing side and affected side between the two groups. 2. The amount of mandibular rotational torque movements were differed in frontal angle and difference on protrusion, and in frontal and in horizontal difference on left excursion between the two groups. But the amounts of translatory movements were actually same on all eccentric movements. 3. The amount of mandibular rotational torque movements with splint mere almost not changed from those without splint, with the exception of in horizontal measurements on protrusion. 4. The correlations of items between in Pantronic measurements and in BioEGN measurements wert not consistently, significant, however, generally the ISS related significantly with horizontal torque movement positively, and with frontal torque movement negatively on the contrary, the PSS showed positive correlation with frontal torque movement, and negative correlation with horizontal torque movement.
Statement of problem. Implant abutment screw joints tend to loosen under clinical conditions. Abutment screw loosening results in loss of preload in function. Purpose. Anti-rotational inner post screw (ARIPS) systems were compared with conventional abutment screws to reduce screw loosening. Reverse torque values were evaluated. Material and methods. 32 implant assemblies (Warentec, Co, Ltd, Seoul, Korea) were organized as the 30-Ncm-torque conventional groups and 30-Ncm-torque ARIPS groups in external and internal system. The specimens were tested to 106 cycles at a load of 200N. Preload reverse torque, postload reverse torque, and the ratio of postload reverse torque to preload reverse torque were evaluated. The data were analyzed with unpaired t-test in external and internal systems. Results. In the ratio of postload reverse torque to preload reverse torque, the ARIPS groups showed significant differences than the conventional screw group in both external and internal system. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, abutment screw loosening was effectively reduced using ARIPS system.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of clutch adaptation on the mandibular rotational torque movement in normal people. 69 dental students were selected for the study. Their mean age were 23.6 years and they did not present any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. $BioEGN^{(R)}$ with $Rotate^{(R)}$ program was used to observe and record the amount of mandibular rotational torque on protrusion, on right excursion, on left excursion, and on comfortable wide opening movement. The natural tooth contact movement and the movement with clutch were performed in the above four each mandibular movement. Clutch was made by the method used in $Pantronic^{(R)}$ clutch fabrication. Distance of slant frontal which was translatory trajectory in frontal plane and degree of rotational torque in horizontal and in frontal plane were recorded. The data obtained were processed with SPSSWIN program and the results were as follows : 1. Distance of slant frontal in each mandibular movement generally increased with clutch. 2. Degree of rotational torque in horizontal and in frontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions did not increase with clutch, but the degree on wide opening increased with clutch. 3. Degree of rotational torque in horizontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions did not show any difference between right and left side, but the degree in frontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions showed significant difference between right and left side. 4. Total amount of rotational torque from right and left sides on protrusion and lateral excursions were not increased with clutch, but the degree on wide opening movement was increased with clutch. And in this case, degree in horizontal plane was larger than that in frontal plane. 5. Correlation between total amount of rotational torque in horizontal plane and that in frontal plane were highly significant on protrusion and on lateral excursions with or without clutch, but the significant correlation on wide opening without clutch became not significant with clutch.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of implant connection design (external vs. internal) on the fit discrepancy and torque loss of zirconia and titanium abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two regular platform dental implants, one with external connection ($Br{\aa}nemark$, Nobel Biocare AB) and the other with internal connection (Noble Replace, Nobel Biocare AB), were selected. Seven titanium and seven customized zirconia abutments were used for each connection design. Measurements of geometry, marginal discrepancy, and rotational freedom were done using video measuring machine. To measure the torque loss, each abutment was torqued to 35 Ncm and then opened by means of a digital torque wrench. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and t-test at ${\alpha}=0.05$ of significance. RESULTS. There were significant differences in the geometrical measurements and rotational freedom between abutments of two connection groups (P<.001). Also, the results showed significant differences between titanium abutments of internal and external connection implants in terms of rotational freedom (P<.001). Not only customized internal abutments but also customized external abutments did not have the exact geometry of prefabricated abutments (P<.001). However, neither connection type (P=.15) nor abutment material (P=.38) affected torque loss. CONCLUSION. Abutments with internal connection showed less rotational freedom. However, better marginal fit was observed in externally connected abutments. Also, customized abutments with either connection could not duplicate the exact geometry of their corresponding prefabricated abutment. However, neither abutment connection nor material affected torque loss values.
An experiment is conducted for measuring the performance of an air tool, which is operated at 100,000 RPM in an unloaded state with very low torque. A 551 kPa in gauge pressure is supply to the inlet of an air tool. An experimental apparatus is developed as a friction type dynamometer. Inlet total pressure, air flow rate, rotational speed and operating force are measured simultaneously. Torque, output power and specific output power are obtained with different rotational speeds. Those are compared with the experimental results which were obtained by a commercial dynamometer. However, no commercial dynamometers are available for measuring the torque above 30,000 RPM. In order to reduce the rotational speed, a reduction gear is applied between the air tool and the commercial dynamometer. Torque and power obtained by the commercial dynamometer show $55\%$ lower than those obtained by the developed friction type dynamometer, because the mass is added to the rotor of air tool for the braking system of the commercial dynamometer and power loss is generated by the reduction gear. From the compared results, the friction type dynamometer should be applied for measuring the performance of the air tool operating at low torque and high RPM.
