The aim of this paper is to numerically explore the feasibility of designing a Mini-Hydro turbine. The interest for this kind of horizontal axis turbine relies on its versatility. For instance, in the field of renewable energy, this kind of turbine may be considered for different applications, such as: tidal power, run-of-the-river hydroelectricity, wave energy conversion. It is fundamental to improve the turbine performance and to decrease the equipment costs for achievement of "environmental friendly" solutions and maximization of the "cost-advantage". In the present work, the commercial CFD code ANSYS is used to perform 3D simulations, solving the incompressible Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (U-RANS) equations discretized by means of a finite volume approach. The implicit segregated version of the solver is employed. The pressure-velocity coupling is achieved by means of the SIMPLE algorithm. The convective terms are discretized using a second order accurate upwind scheme, and pressure and viscous terms are discretized by a second-order-accurate centered scheme. A second order implicit time formulation is also used. Turbulence closure is provided by the realizable k - turbulence model. In this study, a mini hydro turbine (3kW) has been considered for utilization of horizontal axis impeller. The turbine performance and flow behavior have been evaluated by means of numerical simulations. Moreover, the performance of the impeller varied in the pressure distribution, torque, rotational speed and power generated by the different number of blades and angles. The model has been validated, comparing numerical results with available experimental data.
Two kinds of important issues on Titius-Bode's relation have been discussed up to now: one is if there is a simple mathematical relation between distances of natural bodies orbiting a central body, and the other is if there is any physical basis for such a relation. These may be tackled by answering a question whether Titius-Bode's relation is valid universally in exo-planetary systems. We have examined whether Titius Bode's relation is also applicable to exo-planetary systems by statistically studying the distribution of the ratio of rotational periods of two planets in an exo-planetary system, 55 Cnc, by comparing it with that derived from Titius-Bode's relation. We find that the distribution of the ratio of rotational periods of randomly chosen two planets in the 55 Cnc system is apparently inconsistent with that derived from Titius-Bode's relation. The probability that two data sets are drawn from the same distribution function is 50%. We also find that the Fourier power spectra show that the distribution of the semi-major axis of planets in the 55 Cnc system seems to be stretched. We conclude by pointing out that large numbers of planets should be examined to more convincingly explain the distribution of the distance of planetary formation regions.
Cross wedge rolling process is utilized to manufacture multi-stepped axis symmetrical parts. This process is generally performed under high temperature conditions in order to induce serious deformation. But cold cross wedge rolling process has been rarely studied due to the limits of deformation. Recently, the cold cross wedge rolling process has been utilized to enhance the material strength in specified parts of manufactured products. In this paper, experimental researches were carried out with various forming conditions of cold cross wedge rolling process in order to suggest the design guidance to make preform for cold cross wedge rolling. The tensile strength and the surface hardness of specified region were compared to that of initial material with the variation of the area reduction and the rotational speed of rolling die. With respect to the area reduction, the maximum tensile strength was linearly increased and the surface hardness was rapidly increased within lower percent of area reduction. The surface hardness was saturated over the rotational die speed of 0.8 RPM.
The 'NREL Phase VI' model with a 10.06m diameter was tested in the NASA Ames tunnel to make a reference data of the computational models. The test was conducted at the one rotational speed, blade tip speed 38m/s and the Reynolds number of the sectional airfoils in that test was around 1E6. The 1/5 scale down model of the 'NREL Phase VI' model was used in this paper to study the power characteristics in low Reynolds number region, 0.1E6 ~ 0.4E6 which is achievable range for the conventional wind tunnel facilities. The torque generated by the blade was directly measured by using the torque sensor installed in the rotating axis for a given wind speed and rotational speed. The power characteristics below the stall condition, lambda > 4, was presented in this paper. The power coefficient is very low in the condition below the Re. 0.2E6 and rapidly increases as the Re. increases. And it still increases but the variation is not so big in the condition above the Re. 0.3E6. This results shows that to study the performance of the wind turbine blade by using the scaled down model, the Re. should be larger than the 0.3E6.
We have studied the dynamics of energy-rich hydrogen molecules produced on a graphite surface through H(g) + H(ad)/C(gr) → $H_2$ + C(gr) at thermal conditions mimicking the interstellar medium using a classical trajectory procedure. The recombination reaction of gaseous H atom at 100 K and the adsorbed H atom on the interstellar graphite grains at 10 K efficiently takes place on a subpicosecond time scale with most of the reaction exothermicity depositing in the product vibration, which leads to a strong vibrational population inversion. The molecules produced in nearly end-on geometry where H(g) is positioned below H(ad) rotate clockwise and are more highly rotationally excited. but in low-lying vibrational levels. The rotational axis of most of the molecule rotating clockwise is tilted from the surface normal by more than 30°, the intensity peaking at 35°. The molecules produced when H(ad) is close to the surface rotate counter-clockwise and are weakly rotationally excited, but highly vibrationally excited. These molecules tend to align their rotational axes parallel to the surface. The number of molecules rotating clockwise is eight times larger than that rotating counter-clockwise.
The alignment of facial images is crucial for 2D face recognition. This is the same to facial meshes for 3D face recognition. Most of the 3D face recognition methods refer to 3D alignment but do not describe their approaches in details. In this paper, we focus on describing an automatic 3D alignment in viewpoint of quantitative analysis. This paper presents a framework of 3D face alignment and normalization based on feature points obtained by Active Shape Models (ASMs). The positions of eyes and mouth can give possibility of aligning the 3D face exactly in three-dimension space. The rotational transform on each axis is defined with respect to the reference position. In aligning process, the rotational transform converts an input 3D faces with large pose variations to the reference frontal view. The part of face is flopped from the aligned face using the sphere region centered at the nose tip of 3D face. The cropped face is shifted and brought into the frame with specified size for normalizing. Subsequently, the interpolation is carried to the face for sampling at equal interval and filling holes. The color interpolation is also carried at the same interval. The outputs are normalized 2D and 3D face which can be used for face recognition. Finally, we carry two sets of experiments to measure aligning errors and evaluate the performance of suggested process.
