The flow structure around a rotating axial-fan was experimentally investigated using a phase averaging velocity field measurement technique. The fan blades were divided into 4 different phases, for which 500 velocity fields were acquired for each phase angle with a 2-frame PTV system. Velocity field measurements were also carried out at two planes parallel to the axis of rotation, with offsets toward the radial direction of the fan. For accurate synchronization of the PTV system with the phase of the axial fan, two synchronization circuits were employed with a photo-detector attached to the rotating shaft. The phase averaged velocity fields show periodic variations with respect to the blade phase. The periodic formation of vortices at the blade tip is also observed in vorticity contour plots. Locations of local maximum turbulence intensities in the axial and radial directions are found to be located in an alternating pattern. These experimental results can be used to validate numerical calculations and to understand the flow characteristics of an axial fan.
Misaligned shafts of the rotating machinery have caused noise, vibration. bearing failures, and stress concentration of coupling parts which decrease the efficiency and life of shaft systems. Therefore the proper shaft alignment of those system should be monitored continuously in dynamic condition. To solve these problems under dynamic condition a telemetry system is used. In this study, the condition of the least bending moment which is known by analyzing the structure and stress induced by misalignment is found. After the shaft is aligned by dial gage, a telemetry system with strain gages is installed on shaft. The relationship between bearing displacement and moment of coupling part influenced by misalignment is investigated. The moment derived from two shaft strain at the nearby coupling is measured. The bending strain is measured 5 times for average in static state as well as in dynamic state with 100∼700 rpm.
A novel single phase Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) is proposed in this paper to accurately and rapidly estimate the instantaneous phase angle of a grid. A conjugate rotating vector pair is proposed and defined to synthesize the single phase signal in the stationary reference frame. With this concept, the proposed PLL innovatively sets one phase input of the PARK transformation to a constant zero. By means of a proper cancellation, a zero steady state phase angle estimation error can be achieved, even under magnitude and frequency variations. The proposed PLL structure is presented together with guidelines for parameters adjustment. The performance of the proposed PLL is verified by comprehensive experiments. Satisfactory phase angle estimation can be achieved within one input signal cycle, and the estimation error can be totally eliminated in four input cycles for the most severe conditions.
When a vibration data for a rotating machine such as a pump or a compressor is concerned, the frequency fluctuation of the energy contents at an instant time may provide useful information on understanding the vibration characteristics of the rotating machinery, rather than the averaged energy distribution along the frequency axis. Especially, when a periodic signal has different spectral contents, the approach to use the averaged frequency distribution, called the normal frequency analysis, may not be appropriate to extract vibration source characteristics of the structure. This paper introduces a way to analyze the signal based on an instant time. In order to evaluate the performance of the various approach, the investigatation compares three different algorithms which are frequently implemented in the instantaneous frequency analysis. Also for the noise effect embodied in the true signal, various cases for different SN ratio have been examined. The result shows that the noise level is crucial to evalute the instantaneous frequency analysis. In order to implement the instantaneous frequency analysis, the extraction of the relevant information from the measured signal should have the high S/N ratio, i, e., 40 dB or above.
The spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tool system, while the rotor has unbalance mass inevitably. A high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance which has harmful effect on many machine tools. Therefore, the balancing procedure to reduce vibration in rotating system is certainly needed for all high-speed spindles. So, it was performed with a spindle-bearing system for CNC automatic lathe by using numerical procedure. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the motor rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle-bearing system has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The balancing was performed through influence coefficient method and the comparison was made by whirl responses between before balancing and after balancing. As a result, balancing of simple spindle model reduced whirl orbit magnitude in case of a completely assembled spindle model.
We introduce a rotational decision-directed joint algorithm of blind equalization coupled with carrier recovery for 32-QAM demodulation with high symbol rate. The proposed carrier recovery, which we call a rotational decision-directed carrier recovery(RDDCR), removes the residual phase difference by rotating the decision boundary for the kth received symbol by the frequency detector output of the (k-1)th received symbol. Since the RDDCR includes the function of PLL loop filter by rotating the decision boundary, it gives a simpler demodulator structure. The rotational decision-directed blind equalization(RDDBE) with the rotated decision boundary based on the Stop-and-Go Algorithm(SGA) operated during tracking the frequency offset by the RDDCR and removes intersymbol interference due to multipaths and channel noise. Test results show that symbol error rate of $10^{-3}$ is obtained before the forward error correction when SNR equals 15dB with 150KHz of carrier frequency offset and two multipaths, which is the channel condition for 32-QAM receiver.
The aerodynamic forces and wake structure of the non-rotating downstream circular cylinder, of which the uniform freestream flow is interfered with another spinning upstream cylinder having the same diameter that is located upstream in a line have been investigated experimentally. When the spin rate of the downstream cylinder defined as the ratio of tangential surface velocity of the spinning cylinder to the freestream velocity increases gradually from zero to 1.4, the change of surface pressure distribution, aerodynamic forces of the non-rotating downstream cylinder were measured in case of several distance ratios of 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 defined as the ratio of distance between the centers of two cylinders to the diameter. The wake flow patterns behind the cylinder were also investigated in each case. From the present experiments, it has been found that the spin rate significantly influences the aerodynamic forces and near-wake flow phenomena of the downstream cylinder in such a way that the drag increases as the spin rate and distance ratio increase and the wake width increases as the distance ratio increases.

The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.
Spray characteristics of high pressure injectors for diesel engines have been experimentally studied with special emphasis on the effect of swirl. A constant volume chamber was rotated in order to generate a continuous swirl having the flow field of a solid body rotation, resulting in the linear dependance of the swirl number on the rotating speed of the chamber. Emulsified fuel is injected into the chamber and the developing process of fuel sprays is visualized. The fuel spray developing process in D.I. diesel engine was investigated by this liquid injection technique. The effect of swirl on the spray tip penetration is quantified through modelling. Results show that the spray tip penetration is qualitatively different for low and high pressure injections. For high pressure injection case, a good agreement is achieved between the experimental results and the modeling accounting the effect of swirl. For low pressure injection, a reasonable agreement is obtained. It is found that excessive swirl may cause adverse effect on spray dispersion during the initial combustion period since the spray can not be impinged on chamber wall.
The torque converter is deformed according to the rotating speed and control pressure when engine power is transferred to the transmission. This deformation, which is called ballooning phenomenon, occurs mainly at the outer side by the centrifugal force of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and the control pressure from the valve body. Although the torque converter is slightly deformed when rotating, the ballooning phenomenon affects fluid performance, efficiency and durability. Thus, expansion characteristics analysis is important in determining torus size, control pressure and structure. In this paper, an analysis equation and FEM model was developed to investigate the expansion characteristics. Using this model, structural analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between deformation and the torus diameter. The results were confirmed by comparing with the test results.
