Microstructure modeling of carbonation of metakaolin blended concrete

  • Metakaolin (MK), which is increasingly being used to produce high performance concrete, is produced by calcining purified kaolinite between 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ in a rotary kiln. The carbonation resistance of metakaolin blended concrete is lower than that of control concrete. Hence, it is critical to consider carbonation durability for rationally using metakaolin in the concrete industry. This study presents microstructure modeling during the carbonation of metakaolin blended concrete. First, based on a blended hydration mo del, the amount of carbonatable substances and porosity are determined. Second, based on the chemical reactions between carbon dioxide and carbonatable substances, the reduction of concrete porosity due to carbonation is calculated. Furthermore, $CO_2$ diffusivity is evaluated considering the concrete composition and exposed environment. The carbonation depth of concrete is analyzed using a diffusion-based model. The proposed microstructure model takes into account the influences of concrete composition, concrete curing, and exposure condition on carbonation. The proposed model is useful as a predetermination tool for the evaluation of the carbonation service life of metakaolin blended concrete.

Advanced New Process Development of Two-Stage Swirl Calciner

  • The state of the art of the 2-stage swirl calciner is to make 2-stage counter gas flow in a calciner with cooler hot air. Gas flow in the calciner increases retention time of raw mix particles. Simple structure of the 2-stage swirl calciner operated optimally the rotary cement kiln. In this study, in order to decide the entrance type of the cooler air of the optimal calciner model, an entrance cooler air velocity, the input points of raw mix were analyzed in many aspects with cold model experiment and computational fluidized dynamic simulation. It was found that the entrance type of cooler air fully splite 2-stage for the optimal condition of the cold model calciner. The operation conditions were that the input feeding, the cooler air velocity and the air velocity of throat were 0.33kg/$\textrm m$3$, 15m/s and 20m/s respectively. The performance of 150 t/d the pilot plant connected with the kiln rising duct was that volume capacity of the calciner is over 430 kg/$\textrm m$3$-h, decarbonation rate of raw mix apparently 90%, heat consumption 950 kcal/kg-cli and retention time of raw mix 2.4 sec. Its the best operating condition is cooler air velocity 18m/s, the gas velocity of throat 25m/s, feeding rate of raw mix 10t/h. The operating experience of the pilot plant confirmed the success of scale up for over 3000 t-cli/d.

Ammonium Chloride Solution Leaching of Crude Zinc Oxide Recovered from Reduction of EAF′s Dust

  • EAF's dust has been treated mainly by pyrometallurgical reduction process in rotary kiln furnace to recover valuable metal elements such as Zn and to avoid the disposal of hazardous materials to waste. Recently, hydrometallurgical eletrowinning of zinc from a zinc-amino chloride solution obtained by the leaching of EAF's dust was developed to recover high grade zinc metal from EAF’s dust. But there are some disadvantages in each process such as difficulty of operation condition control and sticking problem in kiln process and low extractability and recovery of zinc owing to insoluble zinc-ferrite in electrowinning process. We propose a new combined process of pyrometallurgical one and hydrometallurgical one to treat EAF's dust efficiently and economically. In this study, ammonium chloride solution leaching of crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust was carried out to find out the efficiency of zinc extraction from it and the possibility for performance of eletrowinning in the proposed process. Effects of various leaching variables ruck as leaching temperature, concentration of leaching solution and leaching time were investigated. And the leaching results of the crude zinc oxide were compared with those of EAF's dust. The extraction percents of zinc in ammonium chloride solution leaching of the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust were above 80% after 60 minutes of leaching under the leaching condition of 4M NH$_4$CI concentration and above leaching temperature of 7$0^{\circ}C$. And the concentrations of zinc in the leached solution were obtained above 50g/$\ell$. The activation energy calculated for zinc extraction in NH$_4$CI leaching was 58.1 KJ/㏖ for EAF's dust and 15.8 KJ/㏖ for the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust.

로타리 킬른 소각로 고도 설계를 위한 연구 III : 3차원 CC1$_4$/CH$_4$기상난류 반응 모델 (A Study for the Advanced Design of Rotary Kiln Incinerator III : 3-Dimensional CC1$_4$/CH$_4$Gas-phase Turbulent Reaction Model)

  • CC1$_4$/CH$_4$/공기로 이루어진 예혼합 화염에 대한 2종류의 난류반응 모델을 Dow 케미칼사의 3차원 로타리 킬른 소각로에 적용하여 그 타당성을 확인하였다. 첫번째 난류반응 모델은 반응률이 반응물질의 난류혼합 속도에 지배된다는 fast chemistry 모델(모델 1)이고, 두번째 모델은 비평형 난류반응 모델(모델 2)로서 열량이 낮고 화염 억제 작용이 있는 산업폐기물인, CC1$_4$존재에 따른 반응감속을 연소속도 자료에 의해 고려한 모델이다. 수치해석의 결과에 의하면 CC1$_4$의 화염억제 작용을 적절히 고려한 두번째 비평형 난류반응 모델은 Dow 케미칼사 로타리 킬른의 출구에서 실험적으로 나타나는 농도 성층화 현상을 정성적으로 규명할 수 있었으며, CC1$_4$/CH$_4$몰비 변화에 따른 연소반응 지연 양상도 확인할 수 있었다. 기타 두 모델에 대한 비교 및 유동의 결과를 자세히 제시하였다.

탄화온도 차이에 의한 목질탄화물의 흡착성 변화 (Changes of Adsorption Properties of Woody Charcoals Prepared by Different Carbonizing Temperature)

  • 북양젓나무(Abies sibirica Ledeb)의 목분, 목섬유, 수피를 탄화하여 획득한 목탄의 물성과 흡착특성을 탄화온도별로 조사하였다. 전체적으로 탄화온도가 상승할수록 탄화수율은 감소하였다. 목탄의 탄소함량은 탄화온도의 상승과 함께 증가하였으나, 수소나 산소의 함량은 감소하였다. 수피탄화물은 목분 또는 목섬유 탄화물과 비교하여 탄화수율이 높게 나타났으며, 수피탄화물 내 회분함량도 상당히 높았다. 목질탄화물의 요오드흡착능은 탄화온도가 높을수록 향상되었으며, 목분이나 섬유 탄화물이 수피탄화물보다 상대적으로 높았다. 기상의 톨루엔에 대한 흡착능은 목탄 종류에 관계없이 $600^{\circ}C$에서 탄화하였을 경우 가장 높게 나타났으며, 이러한 결과는 $600^{\circ}C$에서 생산한 목탄이 비표면적과 총세공용적이 가장 크다는 사실로 쉽게 설명되어진다. 초산가스제거율은 고온탄화물일수록 크고, 암모니아 가스 제거율은 $400^{\circ}C$와 같은 저온에서 탄화한 탄화물이 높은 경향을 나타내었다. 이는 고온탄화물일수록 알칼리성을 나타내는 반면 저온탄화물은 산성을 나타내는 것에 기인하는 것으로 보인다. 따라서 목탄의 pH가 산 또는 염기성 가스 흡착능력에 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 생각된다.

열순환식 저온열탈착 정화장치의 개발 및 유류오염 토양 현장 적용 (Development of Low Temperature Thermal Desorption System and Remediation of Soil Contaminated with Petroleum Hydrocarbon)

  • 본 연구에서는 토양 이송 장치, 로터리킬른, RTO, 사이클론 및 백필터 등으로 구성되어 있고 이동이 가능한 저온열탈착 장치를 제작하여 현장유류오염토양의 처리시험을 수행하였다. 제작된 열탈착장치는 LPG를 연료로 사용하고 배출되는 가스를 RTO를 통하여 재순환하는 방식을 적용하여 경제적인 운전이 가능하도록 하였다. 장치의 현장시험을 위하여 경유와 $C_30$ 이상의 heavy oil로 혼합 오염된 현장토양(2,690 mg TPH/kg soil) 을 먼저 선별기를 통해 50 mm 이하의 입경을 가진 토양으로 채 분리한 후, LTTD 장치의 로터리킬른에 체류시간 15분 조건에서 시간당 7$m^3$의 양으로 투입하였다. 열탈착장치의 온도를 각각 평균 $567^{\circ}C$$692^{\circ}C$로 조정한 후 오염토양의 정화 운전을 수행한 결과, 배출되는 정화토양의 TPH 농도는 각각 46 mg/kg과 32 mg/kg로서 각각 평균 98.3과 98.9%의 높은 정화 효율을 얻을 수 있었다.

인공경량골재의 소성조건이 블랙코어에 미치는 영향 (A study on the black core formation of artificial lightweight aggregates at various sintering atmospheres)

  • 본 실험에서는 로터리 킬른으로 제조되는 인공경량골재의 실험실적 제어 가능성을 찾고자 여러 가지 소성조건에서 석탄 화력발전소에서 발생되는 바닥재와 준설토를 이용하여 인공경량골재를 제조하였다. 인공경량골재 조성은 바닥재 70 wt%와 준설토 30 wt%의 무게비로 성형하였고, 산화 분위기, 불활성 분위기, 환원 분위기에서 각각 $1150^{\circ}C$, $1200^{\circ}C$에서 소성하여 제조된 인공경량골재는 산화 분위기에서 명확한 블랙코어와 껍질(shell)간의 경계를 보이나, 불활성 분위기에서는 질소량이 증가할수록 그리고 소성온도가 증가할수록 경계가 없어지는 경향을 보이며, 환원 분위기에서는 단면 전체가 진회색을 띄게 된다. 로터리 킬른의 분위기와 가장 근접한 소성 분위기는 불활성분위기였으며 밀도나 흡수율 또한 그것과 유사하였다. 이러한 결과로 소형 전기로에서 로터리 킬른의 환경과 유사하게 조건을 제어할 수 있고, 물성을 예측할 수 있는 실험이 가능할 것으로 생각된다.

전기로 제강분진의 재활용과정에서 발생된 Clinker의 전기로에서의 가열용해에 의한 자원화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Resource Development by Heat Dissolution in Electric Arc Furnace of Clinker generated in the Recycling Process of Electric Arc Furnace Dust)

  • In general, when scrap is dissolved in an electric arc furnace, the amount of electric furnace steel dust (EAFD) generated is about 1.5% of the scrap charge amount, and the electric furnace steel dust collected by the bag filter is charged into the Rotary Kiln or Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF), and the zinc component is recovered as crude zinc oxide, at which time a clinker of Fe-Base is generated. In this research, first, for the efficient resource conversion of electric furnace steel dust, a reduction and roasting experiment was conducted and the reaction kinetics was examined. As a result of the experiment, it was observed that the reduction and roasting reaction was actively conducted in the range of 1100~1150℃, and melting occurred in the range of 1250℃. In the past, this clinker was widely used as a roadbed material for road construction and an Fe-Source for cement production, but in recent years, it has been mainly reclaimed due to strengthening environmental standards. However, landfill treatment is by no means a desirable treatment method due to environmental pollution caused by leachate, expensive landfill costs, and waste of Fe resources. Therefore, in order to more actively recycle the Fe component in the clinker, first of all the clinker was pulverized into an optimal particle size, and anthracite and binder (starch) were added to the magnetic material obtained by specific gravity and magnetic separation for briquet. As a experimental results, it was possible to efficiently separate clinker as Fe component and other slag component by specific gravity and magnetic force. As a results of loading and dissolving the manufactured briquet clinker in an electric arc furnace, it was observed that the unit of power and production yield were clearly improved and the carbon addition effect in molten metal was also somewhat.

혼합재 치환율에 따른 경량소재의 물리적 특성 (Physical Properties of Lightweight Materials According to the Replacement Ratios of the Admixture)

  • Lightweight materials were fabricated using glass abrasive sludge, bottom ash and slag powder in this study. This study tried to draw the correlation between physical properties and internal pore of lightweight material. The content of bottom ash and slag powder was from 10% to 50% and firing temperature from $760{^{\circ}C}\;to\;800{^{\circ}C}$ in rotary kiln. The lightweight material containing bottom ash or slag powder had a specific gravity of $0.21{\sim}0.70$ at particle size $2{\sim}4$ mm. Replacement ratio of the admixture increasing with specific gravity increased. Fracture strength of panel made with various lightweight materials was $32{\sim}55\;kgf/cm^2$ and flexural strength was $11{\sim}18\;kgf/cm^2$. Fracture strength increased by 72% and flexural strength was 63% compared with reference. Thermal conductivities of panel was $0.07{\sim}0.11W/m{\cdot}k$. The water absorption ratios of panel with lightweight materials containing bottom ash were $1.8{\sim}2.8$% and slag powder were $2.65{\sim}2.8$%. Excellent results on resistant of water absorption.

난분해성 환경오염물질의 고온.고압연소 (Disposal of Highly Toxic Wastes by using High Temperature and High Pressure Combustor)

  • Disposal of highly toxic wastes like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is very difficult. These substances create a growing mountain of problematic waste that has to be disposed properly. Conventional technologies that are based on common burning(rotary kiln, ${\sim}1100^{\circ}C$) and plasma technology(${\sim}10000^{\circ}C$) do not satisfy important conditions. for example, complete combustion of the toxic waste and the price of waste disposal. The combustor like a rocket engine is operated at relatively high pressure(${\sim}15$ bar) and relatively high temperature(>$3000^{\circ}C$) that are ideal for the complete destruction of extremely toxic substances. In this study, test compound($_o-DCB$) was dissolved in kerosine with a concentration of 10%. Pure gas oxygen was used as an oxidant. Analysis showed that the destruction efficiency achieved for ${o}-DCB$ was 99.9999% or better. The results show that a combustor based on liquid propllant rocket technology is a validated tool for the disposal of highly toxic waste, and a good alternative technology when applied to the destruction of extremely toxic wastes.
