This study was carried out to propose a new-concept internal combustion engine which has great potential advantages to the conventional engines. Proposed new-concept engine is a kind of rotary engine. A rotor is rotating concentrically in a cylinder which is divided into two partitioning valves, and it makes four compartments in the cylinder. The volumes of each of four compartments are changing continuously with the rotor movement and performs the functions of intake, compression. expansion and exhaust simultaneously. Expected thermal efficiency for the real cycle is 26 percent at conditions of 1,000 rpm and compression ratio of 8.0, which is 3 to 4 percent higher than that of the conventional engines such as the piston engine, gas turbine and Wankel rotary engine. A simulation procedure proved that the new concept engine is functional, and has many potential advantages compared to the existing conventional engines.

New concept rotary engine initial prototype has been developed. Engine motoring, compressor pressure and fuel combustion were tested for engine mechanism and operability check. Merits and demerits, applicable areas of the engine have been investigated against reciprocating and Wankel rotary engines. It was found that this engine is best fit for small aircraft and it is better than existing engines for motorcycle, portable and hybrid car Genset too.
Present combustion engines have reached almost at the limit of development due to the fundamental structural problems. This study was carried out to propose a new concept internal combustion engine which has great potential advantages to the conventional engines. Proposed new concept engine is a kind of rotary engine. A rotor is rotating concentrically in a cylinder which is divided into two partitioning valves. and it makes four compartments in the cylinder. The volumes of each of four compartments are changing continuously with the rotor movement, and performs the functions of intake, compression. expansion and exhaust simultaneously. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Expected theoretical thermal efficiency is 44.9 percent at the condition of 1000rpm and compression ratio of 8.0. which is almost the same as that of the conventional engines. i.e., piston and Wankel rotary engine. 2. The new concept engine has 2. working strokes in every revolution. Therefore. the new concept engine can reduce the specific weight and volume than four-stroke piston engine. 3. The torque variation is very small. therefore minimal noise and vibration are expectable. 4. The new concept engine can reduce mechanical energy loss than piston engine because neither crank mechanism nor eccentrical motion exists.
In recent years, the study on the high efficiency of the internal combustion engine has been mainly proceeding. In this study, we developed rotary valve to achieve the improvement of volumetric efficiency and to be simple construction. And then made a comparative analysis between rotary and poppet valve. In this experiment, rotary valve enlarged the flow area of valve port to minimize the resistance of the fluid flow and to flow smoothly in intake and exhaust process. Indeed, valve timing was controlled properly lest positive pressure in exhaust process should affect intake process. Motoring and firing experiments were using engine speed and air-fuel ratio as the principle parameter and the full opening of throttle valve and minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT) as engine operating variables.

A separate type rotary engine consisting of a compressor and an expander is under development. The engine motoring, compressor pressure, and fuel combustion have been tested with the initial prototype for operability checks of the mechanism. This paper describes an engine cycle analysis method designed specifically for this new-concept engine. The unique operational mechanism of the engine and the thermodynamic properties of each step of air intake, compression, filling of combustion chamber, combustion, expansion and exhaust were analyzed. The cycle efficiencies of this engine according to various engine design parameters as well as the cooling effect of compressed air between the compressor and expander can be easily calculated with this method; further, some case studies are presented in this paper.
An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the rotary atomizer for the slinger combustor. In this fuel injection system, fuel is injected and atomized in the combustor by centrifugal forces to engine shaft. The experimental apparatus consists of a high speed rotational spindle, rotary atomizer, pressure tank and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer), and spray was visualized by using high speed camera and Nd:Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the droplet size (SMD) is largely affected by rotational speed, mass flow rate and the number of orifice. As the experimental results, we could understand the spray characteristics of the rotary atomizer for the slinger combustor and obtain the optimum shape of the rotary atomizer which is suitable for the small gas turbine engine.

Performance simulation for a Spark Ignition Wankel rotary Engine is presented in this paper. The volume of chamber at each eccentric shaft angle is evaluated by using geometric models of housing and rotor. A thermodynamic model which includes the first law of thermodynamics, combustion and convective heat transfer from chamber contents to surroundings is imployed. A thermochemical equilibrium model which considers 10 species(CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $H_2$, $H_2O$, OH, O, NO, $N_2$) in the burned gas region, is also employed. Four processes of gas exchange, compression, combustion and expansion are considered and the pressure, temperature and composition of chamber gas at each eccentric shaft angle in each process are computed in this performance simulation. This performance simulation must be useful for optimal design of Spark Ignition Wankel Rotray Engine with parametric study for various design parameters and operating conditions.

Purpose: This study derived the consumed power and load characteristics of a tillage operation performed in an upland field located in Seomyeon, Chuncheon, Rep. Korea, where potatoes and cabbages were cultivated in two crops. Methods: A plow and rotavator were mounted on a tractor with 23.7 kW of rated power to perform the tillage operation. The work conditions were determined, considering the actual working speed of the tillage operation performed by the local farmers. The power consumption of the rear axle, engine, and power take-off (PTO), PTO torque, and tractive force were measured under each work condition. The consumed power and load characteristics were analyzed using their average values. Results: The rotary-tillage operation consumed more engine power than the plow operation for the same tractor-transmission gear condition. The PTO in the rotary-tillage operation and the rear axle in the plow operation consumed the most power. The power consumption of the engine and the PTO for the rotary-tillage operation tended to increase as the transmission gears of the tractor and the PTO became higher. In contrast, the rear-axle power consumption was insignificant. In addition, the PTO torque tended to rise as the tilling pitch increased. For the plow operation, the drawbar power and the rear axle power accounted for 68-90% of the engine power. The engine and rear axle power, drawbar power, and tractive force tended to rise as the working speed increased. Conclusions: The power consumption and load characteristics differed for the plow and rotary-tillage operations. They may also differ depending on the soil conditions. Therefore, the power consumption and load characteristics in various work environments and regions should be analyzed, and reflected in the design of tractors and working implements. The results derived from this study can be used as a reference for such designs.

Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stoke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air may be made to flow inter-mittently through a pipe. In this paper an exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experi-mentally analyze the decrease in flow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables other than rotational speed give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the emissions of SOx and NH3 for a 78 kW class agricultural tractor during agricultural operations. A real-time monitoring system was constructed for measuring the load data. The field test was conducted during plow and rotary tillage. The working conditions were selected with the transmission gears in M3 Low and M2 High for the plow tillage and L3 High and L3 Low for the rotary tillage. The engine torque and fuel consumption were measured using controller area network (CAN) communication, and the emissions of SOx and NH3 were calculated based on the fuel consumption. As a result of the field tests, the engine torque was higher for the plow tillage than for the rotary tillage. As the gear stage was increased, the engine torque became higher. The emissions of SOx and NH3 were higher for the plow tillage than for the rotary tillage because the fuel consumption increased. Moreover, the emissions of SOx and NH3 tended to be more distributed for the rotary tillage than for the plow tillage. To develop an emission factor for agricultural machinery, it is important to measure reliable emission data during agricultural operations. In a future study, we will collect various emission data using a portable emission measurement system during agricultural operations.
