This study was conducted to establish an identification method age for cultivated ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) based on counting the stem vestige at rhizome. Weight, diameters of body and lateral roots, and ratios of those diameters were overlapped with those of other ages, so these are not enough as a criterion for identification of ginseng age. Since the stem vestige at rhizome was remained clearly from the 3rd-year age, root age can be the number of stem vestige +2. The number of stem vestige should be counted at the one side of rhizome with abundant vestige for multi stewed plant. It is necessary that the number of year-ring in root is investigated for rhizome damaged plant, but it must be considered that the new year-ring can be shown clearly after around loth of June. All dormant roots had damaged rhizome by some reasons.
Root cluster section culture, showing high efficient Protocorm-like body (PLB) formation capacity, were established in Doritaenopsis hybrids. Three types of root were obtained from excised shoots in 1/2MS medium containing different concentrations of NAA; \circled1normal roots, \circled2multiple roots and \circled3abnormal root clusters. Those were placed on 1/2MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L thidiazuron for PLB regeneration. PLB regeneration rate was greater in root cluster section cultures (77.8%) compare to normal root tip cultures(30%). Number of PLBs regenerated from root cluster sections were counted over 11 per explant (5.3 per normal root tip).High frequency of PLB regeneration was achieved in root cluster section culture. This result can be used as an efficient method for clonal proliferation of Doritaenopsis hybrids.
In this paper we show that the results of Ahn and Cho (1992) can be applied to a more general class of seasonal models, especially models with autocorrelated errors. Employing the idea of the "two-step estimation" method, we provide test statistics which are easy to compute and have the same asymptotic properties as those in Ahn and Cho (1992) for seasonal unit roots. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the methods and concepts. The power of the test statistics for finite samples is examined through a Monte Carlo sampling experiment.xperiment.
The objective of this in vitro study is to screen a possible inhibitor, originated from some chinese herb medicines, of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase that is the major regulatory enzyme of hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. Fourteen kinds of herbal plant were extracted with water and evaporated for prescreening. The methanol extracts of the effective 3 kinds (9 species) were fractionated with chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and water, and vacuum evaporated. The degree of inhibition of the extracts to HMG-CoA reductase activity was calculated by the spectrophotometric method using microsomal protein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 42949 as an enzyme source. Among these samples, marked inhibitory effects were observed in the extracts of ethylacetate and chloroform fractions of the Rosa rugosa roots, and those of butanol, ehtylacetate and water fractions of pine leaves. Also, the inhibitory effects of the extracts obtained from buckwheat shell and the roots of Rosaceae were found.

In this paper we consider the multiple unit root tests both for the regular and seasonal unit roots based on the Lagrange Multiplier(LM) principle. Unlike Li(1991)'s method, by plugging the restricted maximum likelihood estimates of the nuisance parameters in the model, we propose a Lagrange multiplier test which does not depend on the existence of the nuisance parameters. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistic is derived and empirical percentiles of the test statistic for selected seasonal periods are provided. The power and size of the test statistic for examined for finite samples through a Monte Carlo simularion.
Bangpoong (防風) is a popular crude drug used to expel wind from the body surface (祛風解表) to remove dampness (勝濕). And to relieve pain (正痛) and spasm (正痙). In China and Japan, roots of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schischk. Is used as Bangpoong. However, the roots of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. Or Glehnia littoralis (A. Gray) Fr. Schmidt ex Miquel, being called Sikbangpoong (植防風) and Wonbangpoong (元防風) respectively are used instead of Bangpoong in Korea. The ITS regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA were analyzed to determine original plants and to design a molecular identification method for the crude drugs used as Bangpoong in Korea and China. It is demonstrated that RFLP analysis via PCR has the great potential as a novel tool to test crude drugs for the quality control and standardization.
Identification of the age of ginseng root is very important in commercial market as well as in research field. However, any criterion abut it has not been clearly established yet. We studied to find a clear morphological key for identification of ginseng root\\`s age using the histochemical staining method. Fresh sections of 3, 4, 5, and 6 year old roots were stained with 1% nile blue, observed under the light microscopy, and compared each other. The number of secretory duct layers(SDL) is a useful key to confirm the age of ginseng root as follow; three-year-old root has two, four-year-old one has three, fie-year-old one has four, and six-year-old one has five resin duct layers on each cortical region of roots. Secretory ducts are thought to be formed by the vascular cambium every year. Unlike the surrounding parenchyma cells, secretory epithelial cells lack starch grains in the cytoplasm.
Rehmannia glutinosa is a perennial medicinal plant belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae with more than 300 species known in the world, especially in temperate regions. Its roots have been used widely in Korea for medicinal purposes. However, it is commonly infected by various pathogens during storage, causing great damage to the roots, and impedes the intensive farming of the crop. Therefore, an attempt has been made to isolate and screen a resistance gene against the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum using differential display. We treated salicylic acid(SA), and isolated a resistance gene that responds to SA. As a result, we found that SA was involved in plant defense mechanism in pathogenicity tests with SA treated and non-treted plants, and we isolated a partial PR-la gene through differential display polymerase chain reaction(DD-PCR) method.
Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) is being effectively used in many countries to protect embankment and slopes for their characteristics of having long and strong roots. In this paper, in-situ shear tests of the ground with the vetiver roots have been conducted to investigate the stabilization properties corresponding to the embankment slopes. Numerical analyses have also been performed with the finite element method using elastoplastic subloading $t_{ij}$ model, which can simulate typical soil behavior. It is revealed from field tests that the shear strength of vetiver rooted soil matrix is higher than that of the unreinforced soil. The reinforced soil with vetiver root also shows ductile behavior. The numerical analyses capture well the results of the in-situ shear tests. Effectiveness of vetiver root in geotechnical structures-strip foundation and embankment slope has been evaluated by finite element analyses. It is found that the reinforcement with vetiver root enhances the bearing capacities of the grounds and stabilizes the embankment slopes.
The essential oil was extracted from the roots of Angelica dahurica Bentham et Hooker f. by steam distillation and its composition was analyzed by GC-MS. The antifungal activities were evaluated by micro-dilution method against five Aspergillus and three Trichophyton species. The most abundant component was ${\alpha}$-pinene (17.21%) among 40 compounds identified in this oil. The essential oil fraction of A. dahurica and ${\alpha}$-pinene exhibited marked inhibiting activities against the tested Aspergillus and Trichophyton species with MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) between 0.12 mg/ml and 8 mg/ml.
