  • In order to study the effect of retained austenite on rolling contact fatigue in high-carbon chromium bearing steel, retained austenite was controlled by only tempering temperature, individually 200, 220 and $240^{\circ}C$. Among various microstructural alteration during rolling contact fatigue test, plate-like carbide most related to the flaking at sub-surface of contact pressure. The plate-like carbides formed during rolling contact fatigue test decrease with increasing tempering temperature, and fatigue life is much more improved. The retained austenite was decreased with the tempering temperature, and that decreased plate-like carbide formation. Therefore fatigue life is much more improved with decreasing retained austenite.

  • The indoor PMV(Predicted Mean Vote) in rolling stock is very important for the enhancement of the amenity and health of passengers. Many researchers have studied it not for train but for building. Thermal comfort in Rolling Stock is function of temperature, relative humidity, air current, radiation temperature, etc. So, in this study, we have performed thermal environment in rolling stock(Electric motor car, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa train), and verified the relation between the PMV from Nov.2007 and Feb.2008. As a result, the average PMV value for each trains are 0.2, -0.3 Electric motor car, 0.5, 0.1, 0.1, 1.1 for Mugunghwa, 0.3, 0.5 for Saemaeul.

  • The roll gap set-up in the finishing mill is one of the most important technologies in the hot plate rolling process. As the target thickness can be obtained by the correct set-up of the roll gap, improving the roll gap set-up technology is very critical for plate thickness accuracy. The main cause of thickness variation in hot plate mills is the non-uniform temperature distribution along the length of the slab. The objective of this study is to adjust the roll gap set-up for the thickness accuracy of plate in hot rolling process considering top-end temperature drop. Therefore this study has concentrated on determining the correct amounts of roll gap to compensate thickness variation due to top-end temperature drop. The off-line simulation of compensated roil gap significantly decreases top-end thickness variation.

  • The strip temperature history of finishing mill process is one of the most important factors to stabilize the facilities and to achieve the better product quality including a better prediction of roll force etc. The ultimate goal of this study is to improve scientific understanding of the finishing mill process in the view of heat transfer science. Finishing mill cooling facilities of KwangYang $\#3$ hot rolling are introduced and heat transfer analyses from FET to FDT are particularly focused in this study Three major tasks are successfully achieved as follows: 1) The temperature Prediction Models are developed. 2) The average absolute error is found to be less then 10 Celsius degree (about $8.5^{\circ}C$). 3) Prediction rate (less then $\bar{+}20$) are $10.2\%$ improved $(80.1\;\rightarrow\;90.3\%)$.

  • Nowadays, It is required human body-friendly, good mechanical properties, and economical efficiency material, simultaneously. The material to meet above requirement condition rear up high nitrogen stainless steel(HNS). However, HNS have a lot of problem such as poor workability, hot crack sensitivity. So, It is needed the condition of plastic working to overcome above many problem. In this study, VIM ingot with 100kg was made by pressurized vacuum induction melting. And then, The slab perform for hot rolling was prepared by open-die forging. Hot rolling process was performed by computer simulation according to change of height reduction, rolling temperature, heating numbers, rolling pass and so forth. The results of analysis were investigated between analysis and lab-scale rolling product.

  • In this study, an approach designed to compute high temperature friction coefficients for SCM 435 steel through a pilot hot rolling test and a finite element analysis, is proposed. Single pass pilot hot flat rolling tests with reduction ratios varying from 20 to 40% were carried out at temperatures ranging from 900 to $1200^{\circ}C$. In the proposed approach, the friction coefficient is calculated by comparing the measured strip spread and the roll force with the simulation results. This study showed that the temperature and reduction ratio had a significant influence on the friction coefficient. As both material temperature and reduction ratio become higher, the friction coefficient increases monotonically. This finding is not in agreement with the Ekelund model, which is widely used in the analysis of the hot rolling process. In the present work, the friction coefficient at a reduction ratio of 40% was found to be 1.2 times greater than that at a reduction of 30%. This higher friction coefficient means that an increment of the roll thrust force is expected at the next stand. Therefore, a roll pass designer must understand this phenomenon in order to adjust the reduction ratio at the stands while keeping the driving power, the roll housing structure and the work roll strength within the allowable range.

  • This study investigated the dominant frequency of the elastic waves from the tensile test. The specimen was rolled with five different rolling degrees (10, 22, 33, 42 and 50%), which was treated subzero. The specimen was rolled at room temperature, which was transformed from austenite to martensite (only α'-martensite). The dominant frequency increased with an increase in the rolling degree regardless of the subzero temperature, and decreased after 33% of the rolling degree. On the other hand, higher frequency band was obtained at lower temperature and long time. The dominant frequency increased when the amount of α'-martensite increased and decreased with the α'-martensite amount between 50-65%. The lower subzero treatment temperature increased the amount of α'-martensite, which resulted in the higher dominant frequency. The longer treatment time at the same subzero temperature led to an increase in the amount of α'-martensite, leading to high dominant frequency.

  • In this study, STS316L rolled at five rolling degrees were treated with two types of subzero temperatures for 10, 30, and 60 minutes, respectively, and the dominant frequencies of elastic waves was investigated. The dominant frequency was higher as the subzero temperature was lower and the subzero treatment time was longer at each rolling degree. On the other hand, the dominant frequency was higher as the elongation decreased. In the time-frequency analysis for subzero temperature and time of the specimen with a rolling degree of 33%, the dominant frequency was higher at a subzero temperature of -196℃ than -50℃ regardless of subzero treatment time.

  • Electric rolling stock is one of major public transportation because of an increase in population and heavy traffic problems. The passengers under the influenced of indoor air quality such as air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity. Ventilation system on passenger cars should be designed for the health and comfort of the passengers. One of the main aim is to create an acceptable thermal environment without draught problems. The draught sensation increases when the air temperature decreases and the air velocity increases. Airflow in passenger cars is turbulent. Lateral temperature and humidity gradients in the electric rolling stock have been studied. And, the difference in the mean temperature and relative humidity measured at 0.7, 0.9, 1.2, 1.7 m above from the floor.

  • Width variation of the top and bottom ends of steel at finishing rolling in a plate, has been investigated. It was found that width variation after finishing rolling is affected by edging, broadside rolling ratio, longitudinal rolling ratio, width shape after broadside rolling, temperature, width-to-thickness ratio, and so on. A neural network modelling of back propagation has been conducted on the width variation during rolling. Based on these prediction models, a width control system, by which the roll opening and closing of the hydraulic AWC edger can be adjusted during edge rolling in finishing rolling passes, has been developed. Compared to conventional width model, the neural network model is much accurate in a model. The width control system is applied to a newly built production mill.
