The magnitude of the roll motion of a floating structure depends on the roll damping acting on the body. In other words, the roll damping of a floating structure must be accurately obtained in order to precisely evaluate the roll motion. Various methods are used to evaluate the roll damping of a floating structure, such as the linear potential theory, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and model tests. However, it is difficult to evaluate the roll motion of a floating structure with appendages such as a bilge keel and riser slot due to the limitation of ignoring the viscous effects in the linear potential theory. Among these methods, a model test based on a free decay test and harmonic excited roll motion (HERM) is known to be the most reliable method to estimate the roll damping of the floating structures. In this study, model tests using free decay and HERM techniques were performed in the Ocean Engineering Basin (OEB) of KRISO with various types of midship sections. The roll damping results were estimated based on post-processing methods using both techniques, and the roll damping results were compared.

This paper presents a simple method of rotational motion estimation and correction for roll axis stabilization of an image. The scheme first computes the rotation center by taking least squares of selected local velocity vectors, and the rotational angle is found from special subset of motion vectors. Roll motion correction is then performed by the nearest neighbor interpolation technique. To show the effectiveness of our approach, the synthetic and real images are evaluated, resulting in better performance than the previous ones.

A simple and accurate depth estimation algorithm for an IBVS (Image-Based Visual Servoing) is presented. Specifically, this algorithm is useful for under-actuated systems such as visual-guided quadrotor UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Since the image of a marker changes with changing pitch and roll angles of quadrotor, it is difficult to estimate depth. The proposed algorithm compensates a shape of the marker, so that the system acquire more accurate depth information without complicated processes. Also, the roll and pitch channels are decoupled so that the IBVS algorithm can be used in an under-actuated quadrotor system.

Out of all types of motions the critical motions leading to capsize is roll. The dynamic amplification in case of roll motion may be large for ships as roll natural frequency generally falls within the frequency range of wave energy spectrum typical used for estimation of motion spectrum. Roll motion is highly non-linear in nature. Den are various representations of non-linear damping and restoring available in literature. In this paper an uncoupled non-linear roll equations with three representation of damping and cubic restoring term is solved using a perturbation technique. Damping moment representations are linear plus quadratic velocity damping, angle dependant damping and linear plus cubic velocity dependant damping. Numerical value of linear damping coefficient is almost same for all types but non-linear damping is different. Linear and non-linear damping coefficients are obtained form free roll decay tests. External rolling moment is assumed as deterministic with sinusoidal form. Maximum roll amplitude of non-linear roll equation with various representations of damping is calculated using analytical procedure and compared with experimental results, which are obtained form forced tests in regular waves by varying frequency with three wave heights. Experiments indicate influence of non-linearity at resonance frequency. Both experiment and analytical results indicates increase in maximum roll amplitude with wave slope at resonance. Analytical results are compared with experiment results which indicate maximum roll amplitude analytically obtained with angle dependent and cubic velocity damping are equal and difference from experiments with these damping are less compared to non-linear equation with quadratic velocity damping.

The tracked SUGVs(Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles) are frequently operated in the narrow slope such as stairs and trails. But due to the nature of the tracked vehicle which is steered using friction between the track and the ground and the limited field of view of driving cameras mounted on the lower position, it is not easy for SUGVs to trace narrow slopes. To properly trace inclined narrows, it is very important for SUGVs to keep it's heading direction to the slope. As a matter of factor, no roll value control of a SUGV can makes it's heading being located in the direction of the slope in general terrains. But, the problem is that we cannot directly control roll motion for SUGV. Instead we can control yaw motion. In this paper, a new slope driving method that enables the vehicle trace the narrow slopes with IMU sensor usually mounted in the SUGV is suggested which including an estimation technique of the desired yaw angle corresponding to zero roll angle. In addition, a fuzzy steering controller robust to changes in driving speed and the stair geometry is designed to simulate narrow slope driving with the suggested method. It is shown that the suggested method is quite effective through the simulation.

This paper details the result of flight experiment that examines performance of roll angle estimation algorithm of slowly rolling munition taking time delay of measurement into account when measurement comes in delayed fashion. As the measurement is passed through low pass filter for numerical stabilization and de-noising purpose which induces time delay, we design augmented state Kalman filter that incorporates distribution models of stochastic delay over time. Flight experiment was conducted to verify the algorithm at around 250m high AGL(Above Ground Level) conveying velocity of 28m/s from fixed-wing mother plane to the munition. Munition was made spun with respect to its roll axis using internal reaction wheel afterward. Numerical comparison of proposing method's roll estimation performance with that of commercial aerospace graded GPS/INS shows that proposed filter design can effectively compensate time delay of measurement.
In this paper, a horizontal LOS(line of sight) rate estimator for conventional sea skimming ASM(anti-ship missile) is proposed. A LOS rate dynamics model in 2 axis gimbal system and in homing geometry is derived. And a new LOS rate estimator is proposed by applying a Kalman filter theory to the LOS rate dynamics model. The proposed filter can estimate LOS rates with taking roll motions into account. Simulation results show the proposed filter produces smaller estimation errors than a conventional method.

Hydrodynamic coefficients should be accurately estimated to predict the maneuverability of underwater vehicles. Various captive model tests have been performed as part of estimation methods for these coefficients. Estimating hydrodynamic coefficients related to roll motion is important because underwater vehicles are sensitive to changes of roll moment. In this research, a pure roll motion equipment was newly designed to simply estimate hydrodynamic coefficients with respect to roll motion. Roll motion was implemented through a brief mechanical mechanism. The principle of operation, application process, and system identification of the equipment are described. An analysis method of the pure roll test is also suggested. Repeated tests of the newly equipment were carried out to check its reproducibility.
With advances in autonomous vehicles, there is a growing demand for more accurate position estimation. Especially, this is a case for a moving robot for the indoor operation which necessitates the higher accuracy in position estimation when the robot is required to execute the task at a predestined location. Thus, a method for improving the position estimation which is applicable to both the fixed and the moving object is proposed. The proposed method exploits the initial position estimation from Bluetooth beacon signals as observation signals. Then, it estimates the gravitational acceleration applied to each axis in an inertial frame coordinate through computing roll and pitch angles and combining them with magnetometer measurements to compute yaw angle. Finally, it refines the control inputs for an object with motion dynamics by computing acceleration on each axis, which is used for improving the performance of Kalman filter. The experimental assessment of the proposed algorithm shows that it improves the position estimation accuracy in comparison to a conventional Kalman filter in terms of average error distance at both the fixed and moving states.

In this study, finite element analysis is carried out to estimate horizontal forces needed for the required power calculation and vertical forces applied on the structural analysis model for the development of automatic serrated surface at metal gasket core machining system. By considering of elasto-plastic material characteristics, nonlinear contact analysis was conducted to compute these loads according to the change of roll reduction, frictional coefficient and core thickness. As the result, horizontal and vertical reaction force variations are found according to parameters and maximum reaction force is also confirmed to be most affected by roll reduction.
