  • This study aimed to analyze the subjects, situations, and reflection levels related to role modeling experienced by medical students during their clinical clerkship and their own reflections. This study intends to suggest ways of improving how residents and clinical faculty should treat and teach medical students. Written interviews were conducted regarding senior medical students' role modeling experiences during their clinical clerkships in 2018 and 2019. Content analysis was conducted for a total of 224 cases from 196 students. Content analysis revealed three types of role modeling content: subjects (faculty, residents, nurses, peer students), situations (clinical competence, personal qualities, teaching skills), and the level of reflection (critical reflection, reflection, thoughtful action, and habitual action) in each case. As role model subjects, faculty were found to be the paramount role model (n=142, 62.83%). Role modeling was the most frequently performed for clinical competence (n=103, 45.98%). Clinical competence was frequently shown in communication and empathic listening during rounds and outpatient relationships between the patient and doctor. Regarding the level of reflection for role modeling, the number of critical reflections was 86 (38.39%) and that of reflections was 80 (35.71%). In particular, negative role modeling showed a high level of critical reflection in relation to faculty (64.44%) and nurses (8.89%). In conclusion, role modeling of medical students participating in clinical clerkships occurs in situations that the role models are not aware of, with positive or negative effects on the formation of professional identity among medical students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how gender role attitudes affect clothing involvement and clothing consumption behaviors in young female generation by changing the traditional sex role stereotype. For the research, the survey was conducted for a month from June 15 to July 15, 2009. Data was collected a total of 368 questionnaires from 20's female university students and analyzed 301 questionnaires with SPSS 12.0. The results were as follows. First, the results of factor analysis on gender role attitudes confirmed the multifactorial theory of gender schema: modern masculinity, conservative gender roles, modern feminity based on emotion, gender role openness, and traditional feminity. Second, gender role attitude of female university students was a little conservative but flexible to accommodate masculinity and active in the emotion expression. Third, gender role attitudes had important effects on clothing involvement which was identified into 4 different factors; fashion involvement, clothing interest, performance risk, and social psychological risk. Fourth, gender role attitudes were related with clothing consumption behaviors as like shopping orientation, on-going information search behavior and brand loyalty because of needs for innovation, exhibition and differentiation. Therefore, it was concluded that not only 'androgynous' from modern feminity based on emotion but also 'masculinity' was applied to important fashion marketing strategic tools by statically affecting female consumer's clothing involvement and clothing behaviors.

  • Purpose: The father's role performance in this study was identified as the correlation between self-confidence and satisfaction with parenting role by husbands of primiparous. Methods: Participants were recruited at a professional obstetric and gynecologic hospital in Seoul. For use in this study, the tool by Lederman et al. was modified to incorporate father's self-confidence and satisfaction with role performance. Percentages, means, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficients were used to analyze the data with the SPSS WIN 11.0m program. Results: The mean score for self-confidence in father's role performance was 35.19 and satisfaction in father's role performance was 45.13. General characteristic significantly related to father's role performance were marriage satisfaction and type of delivery. Also marriage satisfaction and religion were related to satisfaction with role performance in this study. There was a positive correlation between degree of self-confidence and degree of satisfaction in father's role performance. Conclusions: The degree of satisfaction in father's role performance was positively related to self-confidence. So, nursing interventions to improve father's role performance may lead to improvement in father's self-confidence and satisfaction with role performance. Further research is needed to exam causality.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of nurses regarding their roles in social welfare facilities, including role expectation, role performance, and role conflict and its influencing factors. Methods: Data were collected by administering a structured questionnaire to 92 nurses working in 5 types of social welfare facilities. Descriptive statistics, paired t test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed using the SPSS Win 18.0 program. Results: The mean score of role expectation ($4.44{\pm}0.41$) was significantly higher(t =17.50, p<.001) than that of role performance ($3.46{\pm}0.005$). The biggest mean difference between role expectation and role performance was found in "research activities" ($2.92{\pm}0.81$). The mean score of role conflict was $2.89{\pm}0.66$, with the highest mean score found in "conflict caused when one nurse takes up two or more roles" ($3.31{\pm}0.69$). The influencing factors on role conflict were the difference between role expectation and role performance(${\beta}=.45$, p<.001), and facility size (${\beta}=-.37$, p<.001), which accounts for 51.5% incidence of role conflict controlling nurses' age, career, position, and working periods in social welfare facilities (F=17.13, p<.001). Conclusion: The nurses working in the social welfare facilities perceived some restrictions on their role performance compared with their role expectation, this difference being a major factor influencing their role conflict. Therefore, future studies need to investigate interventions to minimize this effect.

The questionnaire was developed through focus group interviews with nurses according on their work experiences and literature reviews that were validated by the researchers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for frequency and severity of nurses' role conflict. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the questionnaire was .95 (frequency), .97 (severity). Results: Mean score for nurses' role conflict was 1.64. The highest frequency for nurses' role conflict was in the category, relationship between nurse and patients or their families ($2.00{\pm}0.46$). The highest severity for nurses' role conflict was in the category; relationship between nurses and doctors ($1.96{\pm}0.56$). Conflict about nurses' role activity showed both high frequency ($1.99{\pm}0.39$) and severity ($1.95{\pm}0.43$). Accordingly, nursing role expectations are various and sometimes conflict by its role set. There are various literatures on role conflict of nurses and discussed how to eliminate the conflict in order to improve nursing service particularly in the hospital organization. This study was designed to determine if role conflict exist among nurses who work in a hospital and if so what resolution were most frequently selected by the nurses to the role conflict. The study population was fifty six registered nurses of K university hospital. The fifty six was defined and selected by nonproportional stratified sampling method to obtain subjects who are from uniform role set. A questionnaire, a list of role connect, stimulated by the literature review, knowledge based on several years' experience in nursing was formulated by the author and administered to the study population. The questionnaire included twenty nine closed question items of role conflict and classified according to the intra sender conflict, intersender conflict, person conflict and interperson conflict. The response choices to the questions range on a scale continuum with degrees of conflict from one to five: never - 0, seldom - 1, occasionally - 2, frequently - 3, and mostly -4. Per cent, means, standard deviation, and x² -test were used to analyze data. The findings of the study could be summarized as follows. 1. General characterstics of the study population: Most of the population were between the age of 22-27 and are not married. 2. Analysis of Role conflict Existence of Role conflict of nurses was found by the total mean conflict score, 2.06. Inter Sender Role conflict revealed the most high mean conflict score and the lowest one was inter person role conflict. Among the five role senders of nurses: Physician, patient and hi9 family, peer and superior, nursing students and hospital administrator, nurses showed the highest conflict mean score for physicians and the lowest score for Nursing student. 3. Analysis of role conflict resolution. Compromise through discussion with the role sender was the most frequently selected method by the respondents. The result also showed that the respondents tend to resolve the conflicting situation created by patient or his family by persuation.
