  • The surface segregation and surface order near the order-disorder phase transition of FeCo alloy was studied through Monte Carlo simulation of an Ising type model Hamiltonian. The results showed that the proper choice of Hamiltonian parameters could reproduce the recent observation of surface order above the transition temperature and that the field term played dominant role.

  • Algebra deals with so general properties about number system that it is called as 'generalized arithmetic'. Observing students' activities in algebra classes, however, we can discover that recognition of the generality in algebraic proofs is not so easy. One of these difficulties seems to be caused by variables which play an important role in algebraic proofs. Many studies show that students have experienced some difficulties in recognizing the meaning and the role of variables in algebraic proofs. For example, the confusion between 2m+2n=2(m+n) and 2n+2n=4n means that students misunderstand independent/dependent variation of variables. This misunderstanding naturally has effects on understanding of the meaning of proofs. Furthermore, students also have a difficulty in making a transition from algebraic proof to numerical cases which have the same structure as the proof. This study investigates whether middle school students can recognize dependent generality and make a transition from proofs to numerical cases. The result shows that the participants of this study have a difficulty in both of them. Based on the result, this study also includes didactical implications for teaching the generality of algebraic proofs.

  • This study demonstrates gel-to-fluid transition temperatures of polydiacetylene bilayer vesicles could play important roles in their colorimetric transition temperatures. We prepared five types of polydiaceylene vesicles with 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) and cholesterol (0-40 mol % of total content). From temperature-dependent observations of the optical signals (colors and UV-vis spectra), the blue-to-red colorimetric transition temperatures of polydiacetylene vesicles were decreased with the cholesterol contents. A further study with microcalorimetry and dynamic light scattering revealed that the polydiacetylene vesicles first underwent gel-to-fluid transitions, which were followed by event(s) responsible for the colorimetric transitions. Energies required for each event were quantified from analysis of the peaks in the microcalorimetry thermograms. The inclusion of cholesterol in the vesicles decreased both the gel-to-fluid and the colorimetric transition temperatures, suggesting that the colorimetric transition of the polydiacetylene vesicles was mediated by the former event although the event was not the direct reason for the color change.

  • Bifurcation analysis of cell cycle regulation in the budding yeast is performed basedon the mathematical model by Chen et al [Molecular biology of cell, 11:369-391, 2000]. On the bifurcation diagram, locations of both stable and unstable solutions of the nonlinear differential equations are presented by taking the mass of cell as a controlparameter. Based on the bifurcation diagram, dynamic mechanism underlying the 'start' transition, initiation of a new round of cell cycle, and the 'finish' transition, completion of cell cycle and returning back to the initial state, is discussed: the 'start' transition is a transition from a stable fixed solution for a small mass and to an oscillatory state for a large mass, and the 'finish' transition is a switching back to the stable fixed solution from the oscillatory state. To understand the role of the genes during the cell cycle regulation, bifurcation diagrams for the mutants are compared with that of the wild type.

  • Solvolyses of methanesulfonyl chloride (CH3SO2Cl) in water and methanol have been studied theoretically using ab initio self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) molecular orbital method. All stationary structures including transition state on the potential energy surface in solution have been found and compared with the gas phase structures. The overall reaction occurs via a concerted SN2 mechanism with a non-cyclic trigonal bipyramidal transition state, and the activation barrier is lowered significantly in solution. The transition state for the hydrolysis reaction is looser than that for the methanolysis reaction, and this is in accord with the experimental findings that an SN2 type mechanism, which is shifted toward an SN1 process or an SAN process in the hydrolysis and alcoholysis reaction, respectively, takes place. The catalytic role of additional solvent molecules appears to be a purely general-base catalysis based on the linear transition structures. Experimental barrier can be estimated by taking into account the desolvation energy of nucleophile in the reaction of methanesulfonyl chloride with bulk solvent cluster as a nucleophile.

  • As a low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts with high performance and stability become a key challenge in the development of the practical use of water electrolysis, there is an intense interest in transition-metal oxalate-based materials. Transition-metal oxalate-based catalysts with excellent electrochemical performances have been widely applied in water electrolysis due to its low-cost and ease of synthesis. This review provides a useful summary on the development of transition-metal oxalate as potential catalysts for water electrolysis with a focus on the structural and compositional alteration, role of oxalate anion, and enhanced electrochemical performances.

  • In the ocean bubble layers play a significant role in the sound propagation as well as sound generation. Most of early works dealt with acoustic properties of the bubble layers with sharp flat boundaries. Bubble layers with sharp flat boundaries. Bubble layers with transition sublayers are more likely in the coean. In this paper a theory of sound propagation through plane bubble layers with transition sublayers at both borders was developed. It shows that the reflection and transmission coefficients depend on the thickness of transition sublayers. The theory with thicker transition sublayers shows weaker resonance properties of bubble layer. It gives better presentation for the peculiar behavior of the experimental data than that with sharp flat boundaries.

  • Characterization of wind flows over a complex terrain, especially mountain-gorge terrain (referred to as the very complex terrain with rolling mountains and deep narrow gorges), is an important issue for design and operation of long-span bridges constructed in this area. In both wind tunnel testing and numerical simulation, a transition section is often used to connect the wind tunnel floor or computational domain bottom and the boundary top of the terrain model in order to generate a smooth flow transition over the edge of the terrain model. Although the transition section plays an important role in simulation of wind field over complex terrain, an appropriate shape needs investigation. In this study, two principles for selecting an appropriate shape of boundary transition section were proposed, and a theoretical curve serving for the mountain-gorge terrain model was derived based on potential flow theory around a circular cylinder. Then a two-dimensional (2-D) simulation was used to compare the flow transition performance between the proposed curved transition section and the traditional ramp transition section in a wind tunnel. Furthermore, the wind velocity field induced by the curved transition section with an equivalent slope of $30^{\circ}$ was investigated in detail, and a parameter called the 'velocity stability factor' was defined; an analytical model for predicting the velocity stability factor was also proposed. The results show that the proposed curved transition section has a better flow transition performance compared with the traditional ramp transition section. The proposed analytical model can also adequately predict the velocity stability factor of the wind field.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the health-illness transition of patients with Young-Onset Parkinson's Disease (YOPD). Methods: From June to November 2011, 17 patients with YOPD who visited a neurologic clinic in a tertiary hospital participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin. Results: The core category of the participants' health-illness transition emerged as 'reshaping identity following uncontrollable changes'. The participants' health-illness transition process consisted of six phases in sequence: ego withdrawal, loss of role, frustration, change of thought, modification of life tract, and second life. Although most participants proceeded through the six phases chronologically, some returned to the frustration phase and then took up the remaining phases. Conclusion: The study results provide an in-depth understanding of health-illness transition experiences in the participants. These findings suggest a need to develop appropriate nursing intervention strategies according to the different phases in the health-illness transition of patients with YOPD.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the transition of simulation-based learning (SBL) in nursing schools. Methods : The study was conducted in accordance with Walker and Avant's conceptual analysis process. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and RISS (Korean Education and Research Information Service) databases, resulting in nine studies for an in-depth review. Results : The attributes of transition of SBL include (1) preparing for a professional role, (2) practicing in a real clinical setting, and (3) progressing toward expected competency. Antecedents of the concept include novice status, changing roles, clinical experience in controlled settings, and expected competency in the clinical setting. Conclusion : The transition of SBL includes the important feature of progression toward expected competency. Further research is needed to identify graduate nurses' experiences during this transition to establish a strategy for improving it and developing a measurement tool that reflects attributes of the concept.
