  • The rockfall protection fences are installed to reduce rockfall damage in roads side slopes. The energy absorbing capacity of widely used rockfall protection fences is about 50kJ, But in many cases, rockfall protection fences are easily damaged even by a low level of rockfall energy. The objective of this paper is to verify the energy absorbing capacity of rockfall protection fences and investigate the behavior of them by rockfall. The LS-DYNA3D, a finite elements analysis program for dynamic movement of three dimensional objects, is used to perform the numerical simulations. In the result it is shown that rockfall protection fences absorb half of standard absorbing energy or less than it. It is inadquate for the rockfall protection fences to perform the principal function. To improve the performance of the fences, new rockfall proctection fence is proposed and numerical simulation is performed.

  • This is the second of two companion papers that describe the performance assessment for flexible rockfall protection systems. Described in a companion paper is the criteria to assess the performance of flexible rockfall protection systems. In this study the performance assessment of domestic rockfall protection fences was implemented using the criteria suggested in the companion paper. It was investigated that the rockfall protection fences for express highways performed well to resist the rockfall energy of 50kJ and the deformed rockfall protection fences right after impacting would not obstruct the vehicle traffic. However, to dissipate the rockfall energy of 50kJ with the level of European standards constantly, the spacing of wireropes was adjusted to be 200mm up to the 8th wirerope from the bottom and spacing-maintainers should be extended to the 8th wirerope. It was figured out that the rockfall protection fences for general highways were required to install spacing-maintainers as those for express highways because they, which did not have spacing-maintenance members, were very prone to the penetration of rockfall even for the very small rockfall impact energies.

  • In this study a test was conducted to identify weak section using 100kJ class rock energy to find out the protection performance of rockfall prevention fences in Korea. Performance rating of the rockfall protection fences is very low (48~61kJ) compared to that of foreign countries and it is necessary to determine whether it can function properly if high rock energy is generated. Furthermore, a reinforcing technology that can improve to 100kJ energy on the existing rockfall protection fences should be developed. Therefore, this study confirmed the protection performance using 100kJ rock energy in the existing rockfall protection fence system (for national road, for highway) and identified weak section of post, wire ropes and nets. Furthermore, it will be used as basic data for developing 100kJ class reinforcement technology without dismantling the existing rockfall protection fence (48-61kJ).

  • Rockfall protection fence is one of the most common rockfall protection measures in Korea. The fences have been constructed in almost every hazardous cutslopes along national highway in Korea. However, the capability and performance of the fence as rockfall protection system are seldom known since no field test which can provide information on the response and the behavior of fence was carried out. This is the first full scaled rockfall test in Korea. The objectives of the test are to provide the information on the behavior and the capability of fence and to propose the design specifications for the fence. In this test, four different systems have been selected and tested. For each test, the rockfall impact energy was analyzed and the response and behavior of the system were investigated.

  • Rockfall protection fence which is used for mitigation of rockfall hazard, has been constructed without consideration of lithology, height and dip angle of rock slope. However, those factors should be considered for the construction of the protection fence. In addition, the protection fence should be evaluated its performance by in-situ test in order to utilize the fence effectively. This is the first full sized rockfall test in Korea. For this test, the rock cut slope whose height is about 20 m and dip angle is 65 $^{\circ}$ has been chosen. Based on the preliminary simulation procedure, four different concrete balls (0.5 ton, 1.0 ton, 2.0 ton and 5.0 ton) were prepared and four different types of protection fence were constructed. The results of this test will be utilized in the establishment of rockfall protection fence construction manual.

  • Rockfall protection fences are used for diminishing rockfall damage in roads side slopes. In order to install the fences in effective way, the conditions of rock slopes and total predicted impact energy of fa11ing rock should be considered. However, the fences have been constructed without any consideration for lithology, height and slope angle of rock slope in Korea. In addition, the information about the performance of the protection fences, which should be evaluated by in-situ test or laboratory test in order to check out the practical use in the field, is not available. Therefore, in design manual for the rockfall protection fence, the specific details for the installation of this type of fence are not provided yet. The full sized rockfall in situ test was carried out for the calculation of falling energy of rock and the evaluation of the maximum energy absorbing capacity of fence. For this test, the rock slopes whose heights are about 20 m and dip angle of 65 degree, have been chosen. This is because those geometries are mean height and slope angle of most road cut slopes along Korean national highway. Based on the preliminary simulation procedure, four different sizes of concrete ball (0.7, 1.3, 2.3 and 4.3 ton) were prepared and flour different types of protection fence were constructed. The results of this test provide information about the maximum energy absorbing capacity of the fence, kinetic energy of rockfall and restitution coefficient, and these results can be utilized in the establishment of rockfall fence design and construction manual.

  • Rockfall Protection fence is one of the most common rockfall Protection methods in Korea. If rockfall protection fences are required along the road or railway, their location, height and capacity, in terms of the maximum kinetic energy that they can absorb, should be specified. Within this paper, the best practice of rockfall barrier is introduced. Modern rockfall simulations as a means to define risks, protection requirements, dynamic loading and height of potential structures and selection of appropriate placement is presented. Technical possibilities of rockfall barriers and their actual limits are presented. Safety concepts based on probabilistic approaches are proposed. Recent studies peformed in other countries show that Flexible Barriers are also a feasible system to stop and retain debris flows. Finally an outlook onto further development is given.

  • Designs for rockfall protection systems must consider rock and soil types, the angle of the slope, conditions on top and the toe of the affected area. Rockfall protection fence is installed to block for falling rock from cut slopes and this is one of the most common rockfall protection measures. The capability of the fence is provided that sum of capability of poly vinyl chloride coated wire mesh, steel support and wire rope respectively. But in some case, the rockfall protection fence was not supported rockfall energy less than total capability of the fence through the full scale rockfall tests. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to indicate the problems of fence capability and to improve the design specifications for the fence.
