  • For liquid rocket engine test, one of most important design parameters to be measured is thrust. However, not like solid rocket motor, a liquid rocket engine is attached to the propellant feed system, control valve and many other safety systems. Without considering these effects, thrust data measured from firing test is not reliable and sometimes almost meaningless. In this research, new thrust measurement system, which includes all these side effects, was designed and fabricated.

  • In this paper, the numerical analysis for heat conduction of silica/phenolic composite material, which is used for solid rocket nozzle liner or insulator, was conducted. 1-D Finite Difference Method for the analysis of silica/phenolic during the firing of solid rocket motor was used to calculate the heat conduction considering the surface ablation and the thermal decomposition. The boundary condition at the nozzle wall took into account the convective heat transfer, which was obtained by integration equation. The numerical results of the surface ablation and char depth were compared with the results of test motor that is TPEM-10. It was found that the result of calculation is favorably agreed with the thermal response of test motor.

  • Ground hot-firing tests were conducted to analyze the combustion performance according to the characteristic lengths 1.37 m, 1.71 m, and 2.06 m of the combustion chamber in 200 N-class GCH4-LOx small rocket engine. Thrust, specific impulse, and characteristic velocity at the steady-state could be obtained as the key performance parameters of the rocket engine. The performance characteristics acquired through the test were compared and analyzed with the theoretical performance calculated from CEA analysis. Observation of the influence of characteristic length on the combustion performance indicates that an optimal characteristic length shall remain between 1.71 m and 2.06 m.

  • Electro-Mechanical Ignition Safety Device(EMISD) for solid rocket motor is designed and manufactured. The EMISD utilizes a true rotary solenoid for arming mechanism and an electric squib(initiator) for generating ignition energy. In order to prove the ignition capability of the EMISD, 10-cc Closed Bomb Test(CBT) is performed, which measures the pressure built by high temperature and high pressure gas generated by operating EMISD.

  • A vertical hot-firing test facility was established to carry out the IPPT(Integrated Propulsion Performance Test) and SQT(Stage Qualification Test) of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III). The components for actual launcher were mostly used, hence these tests were carried out under the condition of relatively lower safety margin. To perform hot-firing tests with the maximum safety, an engine emergency blockage system was investigated and applied. An emergency blockage system using combustion chamber pressures and acceleration signals was set up to monitor ignition delay and fail, flame out, propellant feeding status, unstable combustion and excessive structural vibration. With such a system, the test safety could be secured by rapid judgement and follow-up measures, which made IPPT and SQT be safely completed.

  • Firing test of solid rocket motor with pintle-technology carried out and the measured pressure-time curve was compared with the values predicted by the internal ballistic and performance analysis. Without baffle, the measured combustion chamber pressure was similar with the predicted pressure at the beginning of combustion, but gradual increase in pressure, which was unexpected with the end-burning grain of which burning area is constant, was observed. A baffle was inserted to make uniform flow over the pintle. Unlike the thruster without baffle, the measured combustion chamber pressure was 1.4 times higher than the predicted value. Through the CFD simulation, 10% of total pressure loss of the flow was observed from combustion chamber to nozzle throat when the baffle was inserted. The measured pressure with baffle was predicted well by considering the total pressure loss in the internal ballistic modelling and performance analysis.

  • Using kerosene and liquid oxygen, 1.5-tonf class liquid-liquid pintle injector with rectangular two-row orifice was designed and manufactured. The combustion test of the pintle injector was carried out to verify the combustion performance and combustion stability under a supercritical condition which is the actual operation condition of the liquid rocket engine. The combustion test result showed that the pintle tip was damaged by the high temperature combustion gas in the high-mixed ratio recirculation zone of the combustion chamber. To solve this problem, the insert nozzle was installed in the pintle injector to increase cooling performance at the pintle tip. As a result of the hot firing test, installation of the insert nozzle, AR and BF had a great effect on pintle tip cooling performance.
