Construction schedule acceleration due to unreasonable construction planning frequently leads to construction accidents. In order to avoid such inevitable acceleration and to ensure safety in construction sites, there is a need for objective standards to determine appropriate construction duration for each construction process earlier in the process. In order to achieve the goal, intensive experts interviews were firstly conducted to identify candidate drivers affecting construction schedule of road tunnel excavation works. Then, a total of 34 field data was collected from on-going sites to analyze. It was found that actual excavation length per one day on site is varied mostly by Rock Mass Rating(RMR) types from various statistical analyses. Therefore an one-way table of excavation length per a day by RMR types were presented in a form of percentile. The results will help industry experts determine the most appropriate construction schedule for the works, which eventually lead to a zero accident site in many ways.
Scaled model tests were performed to investigate the influence of pillar width, rock strength and isotropy/anisotropy on the stability of twin tunnels. Test models had respectively different pillar widths, uniaxial compressive strengths of modelling materials and model types, where both the deformation behaviors around tunnels and the biaxial pressure data at a time of pillar cracking were analysed. The cracking pressures of the higher strength models were higher than the lower strength models, whereas the percentage of cracking pressure to uniaxial compressive strength of modelling materials showed an opposite tendency. The cracking pressures of the shallower pillar width models were lower than the thicker models, moreover the percentage of that showed a same tendency. It has been found that the pillar width was one of the main factors influencing on the stability of twin tunnels. Model types such as isotropy/anisotropy also influenced on the stability of twin tunnels. The anisotropic models showed lower values of both cracking pressures and the percentage of that than the isotropic models, where the pillar cracks of anisotropic models were generated with regard to the pre-existing joint planes.

There are many counting rules for analyzing man-made mineral fibers. The representatives are the NIOSH Method 7400 A and B counting rules. The two rules have different rules of length-to-width ratio(aspect ratio) and diameter. The A rule counts only fibers $>5{\mu}m$ in length, and only fibers with aspect ratio >3:1. The B rule counts only ends of fibers $>5{\mu}m$ in length and $<3{\mu}m$ in diameter, and only fibers with aspect ratio ${\geq}5:1$. The A counting rule had been used before the B counting rule was introduced. The purpose of this study is to compare the A and B counting rules for airborne fibers from various man-made mineral fibers(glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers, refractory ceramic fibers, and continuous filament glass fibers) industries. There were significantly differences between the paired counts of A and B rules in all types of fibers(p<0.05). A rule counts/B rule counts(A/B ratios) were 1.52 for glass fibers, 1.53 for rock wool fibers, 1.19 for RCF, and 1.82 for continuous filament glass fibers. The counting results by A and B counting rules were highly correlated in glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers and refractory ceramic fibers(RCF) samples (r=0.96 for all types of fibers) except continuous filament glass fibers(r=0.82). Regression equations to correct for the differences between counting rules were presented in this paper.
Blasting is necessary for excavation processes since more than 70% of korean land is consist of mountains. The vibration and noise accompanied by blasting processes usually bring about public complaints. Blasting patterns are chosen by economical efficiency, stability and construction conveniency. However, there are many alternatives without control to settle the popular complaint. To prevent those alternatives, standard blasting method for design and construction were suggested by MLTM (Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs) in 2006. However, standard blasting pattern of MLTM was designed in a lump irrespective of types of rocks. Economical loss may occur by ignoring the characteristics of rocks for the applications to the rocks with low intensity, such as shale, or containing many joint. We deduced some economical progresses by performing test blasting with adjusted drilling spacing and length of burden considering the characteristics of local rock. This paper suggests the start of case studies for different applications. Economic improvement can be expected by applying those results deduced from case studies to design and construction.
Shear behavior of joint plane has been investigated considering the magnitude of normal stresses and initial surface roughness. Shear strength of joint plane has been measured by performing the multi-stage shear test in which applied normal stress level has been increased stepwise. Multi-stage shear test within the specified normal stress range has been repeated and two types of strength parameter variation have been observed: type 1 - both cohesion and friction angle decrease, type 2 - cohesion decrease and friction angle increase. Trends of strength parameter variation for the three rock types, gneiss, granite and shale, have been investigated and the influence of initial roughness of joint plane on the sequential shear strength change for the repeated multi-stage shear tests also has been analyzed.

Objectives: This study was conducted to study the analytical variability of A & B counting rules in counting using a phase contrast microscope airborne fibers collected on filters in man-made mineral or vitreous fibers (MMMFs) industries. Methods: Fibers in filters were counted using A & B rules of NIOSH Method 7400. Intra-counter and inter-counter variations by fiber type and density were obtained. The types of MMMFs analyzed were glass wool fiber, rock wool fiber, slag wool fiber, and refractory ceramic fibers. The densities of fibers classified were <20 $fibers/mm^2,$ 20 - <50 $fibers/mm^2$, 50 - <100 $fibers/mm^2,$ and ${\geq}100$$fibers/mm^2,$ respectively. Results: Intra-counter relative standard deviations by rule A were 0.084, 0.102, 0.071 for glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers and refractory ceramic fibers, and those by rule B were 0.139, 0.120 and 0.142, respectively. Inter-counter relative standard deviations by rule A were 0.281, 0.296, 0.180 for glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers and refractory ceramic fibers, and those by rule B were 0.396, 0.337 and 0.238, respectively. Conclusions: Intra-counter variation was not different significantly among fiber types (p>0.05), but B rule variation for ceramic fibers approximately 2 times greater than corresponding A rule estimates, and intra-counter and inter-counter variations were higher in the low fiber density.
Various TBM performance prediction models have been developed and most of them were considered penetration rate only. Despite the fact that some models have suggested equations and charts for estimating the utilization factor, but there are a few studies to estimate the TBM utilization factor. Utilization factor is affected by the type of TBM machine, operation, maintenance of machine, geological conditions, contractor experience and other factors. In this study, more than 100 case studies are analyzed to determine the relationship between the utilization factor and RMR, geological conditions, TBM types, tunnel length, and TBM diameter. Simple and multiple linear regression analysis are performed to develop predictive models for the utilization factor. The predictive model with explanatory variables of geological conditions, TBM types, tunnel length, and TBM diameter does not give a good correlation. The predictive models with explanatory variable of RMR give higher values of the coefficient of determination.
Physical and microstructural properties of Pungchon and Maggol limestone were investigated quantitatively during 50 cycles of artificial freezing and thawing test. There were decrease in dry weight and P,S-wave velocity, and increase in absorption rate in both rock types. Porosity, pore volume, equivalent diameter, throat thickness and pore orientation were analyzed using X-ray computed tomography images. Porosity increased, and initiation and expansion of pores were investigated as weathering progresses. Physical and microstructural variation in Maggol limestone was larger than that of Pungchon limestone because Maggol limestone has more pores and microcracks at initial state. As this study analyzes physical and microstructural properties of rock specimens comprehensively, it can be applied to further rock weathering study and can be used as fundamental data of construction and resource development in cold regions.
Two-arch tunnels require minimal spacing between the 2 tunnels and thus occupy small amount of land compared to parallel tunnels. But it is rather expensive. The parallel tunnel is not as expensive, but it requires more land than 2-arch tunnels. This may cause a problem when there is a land shortage. The new design is to connect these two types of tunnels by another pair of parallel tunnels where the separation distance is gradually increasing. The applicability of this new design to the cases where rock condition is not even fair has to be verified since the width of the pillar between the connecting tunnels can be quite narrow. Therefore both two and three dimensional numerical analyses were conducted and pillar stability was examined for rock classes IV and V in two different ways. Results showed that this new design is still effective for poor rock conditions if central pillar is properly reinforced by tension bolts as long as overburden is less than five times of the tunnel diameter.
