A novel and simple method of designing the current feedback loop for the velocity controller of an armature controlled dc servo motor is presented. Instead of constructing the usual tight current feedback loop, a loose current feedback loop is suggested in this paper. More specifically, the armature current is not limited to a fixed constant value, but instead the upper bound value is allowed to be variable along with the present motor speed. The control system designed in this manner shows that the motor under control is robust to a wide range of loading conditions and yields a more rapid transient characteristics which is verified experimentally by applying the method in the design of the controller for an Industrial robot.
Using natural speech commands for controlling a human-robot is an interesting topic in the field of robotics. In this paper, our main focus is on the verification of a speaker who gives a command to decide whether he/she is an authorized person for commanding. Among possible dynamic features of natural speech, pitch period is one of the most important ones for characterizing speech signals and it differs usually from person to person. However, current techniques of pitch detection are still not to a desired level of accuracy and robustness. When the signal is noisy or there are multiple pitch streams, the performance of most techniques degrades. In this paper, we propose a two-level approach for pitch detection which in compare with standard pitch detection algorithms, not only increases accuracy, but also makes the performance more robust to noise. In the first level of the proposed approach we discriminate voiced from unvoiced signals based on a neural classifier that utilizes cepstrum sequences of speech as an input feature set. Voiced signals are then further processed in the second level using a modified standard AMDF-based pitch detection algorithm to determine their pitch periods precisely. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed system is better than those of conventional pitch detection algorithms for speech signals in clean and noisy environments.
As an adaptive control function generator, the CMAC (Cerebellar Model Arithmetic or Articulated Controller) based learning control has drawn a great attention to realize a rather robust real-time manipulator control under the various uncertainties. There remain, however, inherent problems to be solved in the CMAC application to robot motion control or perception of sensory information. To apply the CMAC to the various unmodeled or modeled systems more efficiently, It is necessary to analyze the effects of the CMAC control parameters an the trained net. Although the CMAC control parameters such as size of the quantizing block, learning gain, input offset, and ranges of input variables play a key role in the learning performance and system memory requirement, these have not been fully investigated yet. These parameters should be determined, of course, considering the shape of the desired function to be trained and learning algorithms applied. In this paper, the interrelation of these parameters with learning performance is investigated under the basic learning schemes presented by authors. Since an analytic approach only seems to be very difficult and even impossible for this purpose, various simulations have been performed with prespecified functions and their results were analyzed. A general step following design guide was set up according to the various simulation results.

This paper introduces a stabilization condition for polynomial fuzzy systems that guarantees $H_{\infty}$ performance under the imperfect premise matching. An $H_{\infty}$ control of polynomial fuzzy systems attenuates the effect of external disturbance. Under the imperfect premise matching, a polynomial fuzzy model and controller do not share the same membership functions. Therefore, a polynomial fuzzy controller has an enhanced design flexibility and inherent robustness to handle parameter uncertainties. In this paper, the stabilization conditions are derived from the polynomial Lyapunov function and numerically solved by the sum-of-squares (SOS) method. A simulation example and comparison of the performance are provided to verify the stability analysis results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed stabilization conditions.
DOB (Disturbance Observer) is an useful control method for estimating the disturbance applied to dynamic systems. Disturbance observer can be used to implement a robust control system to generate a control input for rejecting the disturbance, and it can be also used to estimate the disturbance to obtain information. The system that uses disturbance estimation is investigated for high performance control such as automatic door systems, walking robot and electric power steering system in vehicles. In this paper, a novel disturbance observer which is called disturbance and current observer for estimating load torque in the motor system is proposed. The difference between the DOB for disturbance rejection and DCOB is mathematically verified. Current and angular velocity are required for estimating the load torque of the motor in DOB. However, the DCOB can estimate load torque and current without current sensor. DCOB is designed based on modeling of the motor system. Appropriate Q-filter is selected and the applicability of DCOB is verified by simulation. The estimated disturbance and current of the electric motor can be verified without current sensor, as experiments of the actual motor system.
Through the simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) technique, a robot can create maps about its unknown environment while it continuously localizes its position. Grid maps and feature maps have been widely used for SLAM together with application of probability methods and POMDP (partially observed Markov decision process). But this approach based on grid maps suffers from enormous computational burden. Topological maps, however, have drawn more attention these days because they are compact, provide natural interfaces, and are easily applicable to path planning in comparison with grid maps. Some topological SLAM techniques like GVG (generalized Voronoi diagram) were introduced, but it enables the robot to decide only whether the current position is part of GVG branch or not in the GVG algorithm. In this paper, therefore, to overcome these problems, we present a method for updating a global topological map from the local topological maps. These local topological maps are created through a labeled Voronoi diagram algorithm from the local grid map built based on the sensor information at the current robot position. And the nodes of a local topological map can be utilized as the features of the environment because it is robust in light of visibility problem. The geometric information of the feature is applied to the extended Kalman filter and the SLAM in the indoor environment is accomplished. A series of simulations have been conducted using a two-wheeled mobile robot equipped with a laser scanner. It is shown that the proposed scheme can be applied relatively well.

Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments, because they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. In most cases, a single ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object based on time-of-flight (TOF) information, whereas multiple sensors are used to recognize the shape of an object, such as a corner, plane, or edge. However, the conventional sequential driving technique involves a long measurement time. This problem can be resolved by pulse coding ultrasonic signals, which allows multi-sensors to be fired simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, the current presents a new simultaneous coded driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition in autonomous mobile robots. The proposed system is designed and implemented using a DSP and FPGA. A micro-controller board is made using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the coded signals, and a 5-channel coded signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances for each sensor were obtained from the received overlapping signals using correlations and conversion to a bipolar PCM-NRZ signal.
Large workspace and strong grasping force are required when a robot manipulates big and/or heavy objects. In that situation, bimanual manipulation is more useful than unimanual manipulation. However, the control of both hands to manipulate an object requires a more complex model compared to unimanual manipulation. Learning by human demonstration is a useful technique for a robot to learn a model. In this paper, we propose an imitation learning method of bimanual object manipulation by human demonstrations. For robust imitation of bimanual object manipulation, movement trajectories of two hands are encoded as a movement trajectory of the object and a force trajectory to grasp the object. The movement trajectory of the object is modeled by using the framework of dynamic movement primitives, which represent demonstrated movements with a set of goal-directed dynamic equations. The force trajectory to grasp an object is also modeled as a dynamic equation with an adjustable force term. These equations have an adjustable force term, where locally weighted regression and multiple linear regression methods are employed, to imitate complex non-linear movements of human demonstrations. In order to show the effectiveness our proposed method, a movement skill of pick-and-place in simulation environment is shown.

The intelligent sensory system is required to ensure the accurate welding performance. This paper describes the development of an intelligent vision sensor for the robotic laser welding. The sensor system includes a PC based vision camera and a stripe-type laser diode. A set of robust image processing algorithms are implemented. The laser-stripe sensor can measure the profile of the welding object and obtain the seam line. Moreover, the working distance of the sensor can be changed and other configuration is adjusted accordingly. The robot, the seam tracking system, and CW Nd:YAG laser are used for the laser welding robot system. The simple and efficient control scheme of the whole system is also presented. The profile measurement and the seam tracking experiments were carried out to validate the operation of the system.
