  • Recently, a number of researches about linear magnetorheological(MR) damper using valve-mode characteristics of MR fluid have sufficiently undertaken, but researches about rotary MR damper using shear-mode characteristics of MR fluid are not enough. In this paper, we performed vibration control of shear-mode MR damper for unlimited rotating actuator of mobile robot. Also fuzzy logic based vibration control for shear-mode MR damper is suggested. The parameters, like scaling factor of input/output and center of the triangular membership functions associated with the different linguistic variables, are tuned by genetic algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the fuzzy-skyhook controller for vibration control of shear-mode MR damper under impact force.

  • A proper walking pattern is to be assigned for a walk of multi-legged robots. For the purpose of identifying a good walking pattern for multi-legged robots, this paper consider a simple model of quadruped robotic walking and analyze its walking balance based on the centroid of foot polygons formed in every step. A performance index to estimate the walking balance is also proposed. Simulation studies show that the centroid trajectory of foot polygons and the walking balance in a common quadruped walking are different according to the walking pattern employed. Based on the walking balance index and a bio-mimetic aspect, a useful walking pattern for quadruped robots is finally addressed.

  • This study addresses a method for 3D reconstruction using acoustic data with heterogeneous sonar devices: Forward-Looking Multibeam Sonar (FLMS) and Profiling Sonar (PS). The challenges in sonar image processing are perceptual ambiguity, the loss of elevation information, and low signal to noise ratio, which are caused by the ranging and intensity-based image generation mechanism of sonars. The conventional approaches utilize additional constraints such as Lambertian reflection and redundant data at various positions, but they are vulnerable to environmental conditions. Our approach is to use two sonars that have a complementary data type. Typically, the sonars provide reliable information in the horizontal but, the loss of elevation information degrades the quality of data in the vertical. To overcome the characteristic of sonar devices, we adopt the crossed installation in such a way that the PS is laid down on its side and mounted on the top of FLMS. From the installation, FLMS scans horizontal information and PS obtains a vertical profile of the front area of AUV. For the fusion of the two sonar data, we propose the probabilistic approach. A likelihood map using geometric constraints between two sonar devices is built and a monte-carlo experiment using a derived model is conducted to extract 3D points. To verify the proposed method, we conducted a simulation and field test. As a result, a consistent seabed map was obtained. This method can be utilized for 3D seabed mapping with an AUV.

  • In this paper, we propose a new indoor localization method for indoor mobile robots using LiDAR. The indoor mobile robots operating in limited areas usually require high-precision localization to provide high level services. The performance of the widely used localization methods based on radio waves or computer vision are highly dependent on their usage environment. Therefore, the reproducibility of the localization is insufficient to provide high level services. To overcome this problem, we propose a new localization method based on the comparison between ceiling shape information obtained from LiDAR measurement and the blueprint. Specifically, the method includes a reliable segmentation method to classify point clouds into connected planes, an effective comparison method to estimate position by matching 3D point clouds and 2D blueprint information. Since the ceiling shape information is rarely changed, the proposed localization method is robust to its usage environment. Simulation results prove that the position error of the proposed localization method is less than 10 cm.

  • This paper introduces feedback linearization (FL) based adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) effective against ground effects of the quadrotor UAV. The proposed control has the capability of estimation and effective rejection of those effects by adaptive mechanism, which resulting stable attitude and positioning of the quadrotor. As output variables of quadrotor, x-y-z position and yaw angle are chosen. Dynamic extension of the quadrotor dynamics is obtained for terms of roll and pitch control input to be appeared explicitly in x-y-z dynamics, and then linear feedback control including a ground effect is designed. A sliding mode control (SMC) is designed with a class of FL including higher derivative terms, sliding surfaces for which is designed as a class of integral type of resulting closed loop dynamics. The asymptotic stability of the overall system was assured, based on Lyapunov stability methods. It was evaluated through some simulation that attitude control capability is stable under excessive estimation error for unknown ground effect and initial attitude of roll, pitch, and yaw angle of $30^{\circ}$ in all. Effectiveness of the proposed method was shown for quadrotor system with ground effects.

  • In recent years, the solar cell market has steadily grown with the demand for new energies. And wire sawing is one of the most critical processes in manufacturing solar cell wafer which is supposed to affect the breakage of wafers most during the process and afterwards. Generally, the defects of the wafers are generated from the structural vibrations of the machine. In the sawing process, the vibrations cause unnecessary normal stress on the cut surface of wafers, and eventually create the surface damage or leave the residual stress. In this study, the dynamic properties of a wire saw have been analyzed through the frequency response test and the computer simulation. And the effects of the design alterations have been investigated to stabilize the machine structure and further to reduce the vibrations. The result shows that relatively simple design alterations of supporting structure without any change of major parts of the machine can suppress the vibrations of the machine effectively.

  • Pipes are widely used in various industries such as automobile, anti-vibration devices, factories and ship building. Chamfering is one of the most critical processes in pipe manufacturing which removes burrs of the pipes for better surface quality. In most cases, the defects of the chamfered surface are originated from the structural vibrations of the chamfering machine. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a chamfering machine have been analyzed though the experiment and the computer simulation. And the effects of the design parameters affecting the stability of the machine have been investigated to stabilize the machine structure and further to reduce structural vibrations. The result shows that design alterations to stabilize the machine can suppress the defects of the machined surface as well as the vibrations during chamfering.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to remove AWGN by considering the characteristics of noise present in the image. The proposed algorithm uses block matching to calculate the output, and calculates an estimate by determining the similarity between the center mask and the matching mask. The output of the filter is calculated by adding or subtracting the estimated value and the input pixel value, and weighting is given according to the standard deviation of the center mask and the noise constant to obtain the final output. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, the simulation was performed in comparison with the existing methods, and analyzed through the enlarged image and PSNR comparison. The proposed algorithm minimizes the effect of noise, preserves important characteristics of the image, and shows the performance of removing noise efficiently.

  • Data-driven engineering is crucial for information delivery between design, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of prefabricated structures. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is a critical methodology for prefabricated bridge structures. In this study, a novel concept of digital engineering model that combined existing knowledge of DfMA with object-oriented parametric modeling technologies was developed. Three-dimensional (3D) geometry models and their data models for each phase of a construction project were defined for information delivery. Digital design models were used for conceptual design, including aesthetic consideration and possible variation during fabrication and assembly. The seismic performance of a bridge pier was evaluated by linking the design parameters to the calculated moment-curvature curves. Control parameters were selected to consider the tolerance control and revision of the digital models. Digitalized fabrication of the prefabricated members was realized using the digital fabrication model with G-code for a concrete printer or a robot. The fabrication error was evaluated and the design digital models were updated. The revised fabrication models were used in the preassembly simulation to guarantee constructability. For the maintenance of the bridge, the as-built information was defined for the prefabricated bridge piers. The results of this process revealed that data-driven information delivery is crucial for lifecycle management of prefabricated bridge piers.
