  • In this study, we try to coincide virtual robot system in an OLP(off-line programming) with actual robot system even though kinematic differences between them are made. The virtual robot in the OLP may be modeled according to kinematics of the actual robot system. However, it is a complicated problem to find exactly all kinematic parameters of actual robot and environment. In this paper, an automated calibration method is proposed In order to find some kinematical parameters which are necessary for the modeling of a robot and environment in the OLP. It is applicable to SCARA robot for assembly task. In this method, a well-marked worktable of environment Is regarded as reference coordinate frame. The robot detects some marks on the worktable through sensors attached to the end-effector. The necessary parameters are calculated from the data of the robot joint variables when the robot detects the mark. The model in the OLP is modified by the parameters.

  • The positioning accuracy of robots depends upon a forward kinematics which relates the joint variables to the orientation and position of the robot extremity in the absolute coordinate system. The relationship between two connective joint coordi- nates of a robot, which is the basis of the kinematics, is defined by 4 Denavit-Hartenberg parameters. But manufacturing errors in machining and assembly process of robots lead to disctrepancies between the design parameters and the physical structure. Thus, improving the positioning accuracy of robots reguires the identification of the actual link parameters of each robot. In this study, the least-squares method is used to calibrate the link parameters and off-line parameter calibration software is developed. Computer simulation is done to study the dependence of the calibration performance upon the DOF of the robot and number of acquired data set used in the least-squares method. 3 DOF Robot/Controller and specially designed 3D coordinate measurer is made and experiment is carried out to verify the theoretical and computational analysis.

  • High flexibility and productivity using industrial robots are being achieved in manufacturing lines with off-line robot programmings. A good off-line programming system should have functions of robot modelling, trajectory planning, graphical teach-in, kinematic and dynamic simulations. Simulated results, however, can hardly be applied to on-line tasks until any calibration procedure is accompained. This paper proposes a visual calibration scheme in order to provide a calibration tool for our own off-line programming system of SCARA robots. The suggested scheme is based on the position-based visual servoings, and the perspective projection. The scheme requires only one camera as it uses saved kinematic data for three-dimensional visual calibration. Predicted images are generated and then compared with camera images for updating positions and orientations of objects. The scheme is simple and effective enough to be used in real time robot programming.

  • In this paper, a prototype Cartesian Parallel Manipulator (CPM) is demonstrated, in which a moving platform is connected to a fixed frame by three PRRR limbs. Due to the orthogonal arrangement of the three prismatic joints, it behaves like a conventional X-Y-Z Cartesian robot. However, because all the linear actuators are mounted at the fixed frame, the manipulator may be suitable for applications requiring high speed and accuracy. Using a geometric method and the practical assumption that three revolute joint axes in each limb are parallel to one another, a simple forward kinematics for an actual model is derived, which is expressed in terms of a set of linear equations. Based on the error model, two calibration methods using full position and length measurements are developed. It is shown that for a full position measurement, the solution for the calibration can be obtained analytically. However, since a ball-bar is less expensive and sufficiently accurate for calibration, the kinematic calibration experiment on the prototype machine is performed by using a ball-bar. The effectiveness of the kinematic calibration method with a ball-bar is verified through the wellknown circular test.

  • Recently, with the development of service robots and with the new concept of ubiquitous world, the position estimation of mobile objects has been raised to an important problem. As pre-liminary research results, some of the localization schemes are introduced, which provide the absolute location of the moving objects subjected to large errors. To implement a precise and convenient localization system, a new absolute position estimation method for a mobile robot in indoor environment is proposed in this paper. Design and implementation of the localization system comes from the usage of active beacon systems (based upon RFID technology). The active beacon system is composed of an RFID receiver and an ultra-sonic transmitter: 1. The RFID receiver gets the synchronization signal from the mobile robot and 2. The ultra-sonic transmitter sends out the traveling signal to be used for measuring the distance. Position of a mobile robot in a three dimensional space can be calculated basically from the distance information from three beacons and the absolute position information of the beacons themselves. Since it is not easy to install the beacons at a specific position precisely, there exists a large localization error and the installation time takes long. To overcome these problems, and provide a precise and convenient localization system, a new auto calibration algorithm is developed in this paper. Also the extended Kalman filter has been adopted for improving the localization accuracy during the mobile robot navigation. The localization accuracy improvement through the proposed auto calibration algorithm and the extended Kalman filter has been demonstrated by the real experiments.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the calibration of a SCARA robot orientation with a camera modeling that accounts for major sources of camera distortion, namely, radial, decentering, and thin prism distortion. Radial distortion causes an inward or outward displacement of a given image point from its ideal location. Actual optical systems are subject to various degrees of decentering, that is, the optical centers of lens elements are not strictly collinear. Thin prism distortion arises from imperfection in lens design and manufacturing as well as camera assembly. It is our purpose to develop the vision system for the pattern recognition and the automatic test of parts and to apply the line of manufacturing.

  • This paper presents a method for the robot localization and calibration using the ultrasonic and the radio frequency. The distance between the receiver and a beacon can be computed by using the difference between times of flight. The presented method uses the gradient of the maximum amplitude of the ultrasonic in order to measure the time of flight precisely. The measured three distances between the receiver and the beacon are used to compute the robot position by the direct inverse method and the iterated least square approximation method. This paper is defined the calibration as the problem to find the location of 3 beacons and 3 robots, and presents 3 methods for it and found the 2B2R method as the best among them.

  • Cerebellar Model Linear Associator Net(CMLAN), a kind of neuro-net based adaptive control function generator, was applied to the problem of direct inverse calibration of three and six d.o.f. POMA 560 robot. Since CMLAN autonomously maps and generalizes a desired system function via learning on the sampled input/output pair nodes, CMLAN allows no knowledge in system modeling and other error sources. The CMLAN based direct inverse calibration avoids the complex procedure of identifying various system parameters such as geometric(kinematic) or nongeometric(dynamic) ones and generates the corresponding desired compensated joint commands directly to each joint for given target commands in the world coordinate. The generated net outputs automatically handles the effect of unknown system parameters and dynamic error sources. On-line sequential learning on the prespecified sampled nodes requires only the measurement of the corresponding tool tip locations for three d.o.f. manipulator but location and orientation for six d.o.f. manipulator. The proposed calibration procedure can be applied to any robot.

  • The main problem of the calibration of robots is to measure the position and orientation of a robot end effector. The calibration methods can be used as tool to improve the accuracy of robots without change of the arm or control architecture or robots. But such calibration methods require accurate measurements. Dynamic measurement of position and orientation provides a solution for this problem and improves dynamic accuracy by dynamic calibration of robots. This paper describes the development of the laser tracking system capable of determining the static and dynamic performance of industrial robots. The structure and systems components are presented and basic experimental results are included to demonstrated the instrument performance. The system can be applied to the remote controlled mobile robots as well s the calibration of robots.

  • Automated parking assist systems are being commercialized and rapidly spread in the market. In order to improve odometry accuracy, we proposed a practical odometry calibration scheme of Car-Like Mobile Robot (CLMR). However, there were some open problems in our prior work. For example, it was not clear whether the kinematic parameters always converged or not using the proposed calibration scheme. In addition, test driving had to be carried out "twice" without detailed explanation. This research aims to provide answers for the addressed questions though the convergence property analysis of the calibration scheme. In this paper, we evaluate on the effect of the kinematic parameter error on the odometry error at the final pose by numerical computation. The evaluation will show that the wheel diameter and tread of the CLMR can be calibrated by iterative test drives. In addition, the region of convergence in the parametric space will be discussed. Presented experimental results clearly showed that the proposed calibration scheme would be useful in practical applications.
