One of the purposes of space exploration is to be able to utilize the unlimited natural resources in the universe. For this purpose, plans for lunar and mars bases have been proposed by leading nations. In order to construct bases and search for resources, it is necessary to employ and develop rovers for surface navigation and exploration. With proper knowledge about Lunar surface, technology for lunar rover development can be established without serious obstacles, since robot technology for rover development has been well prepared in Korea. In this paper, lunar rovers and mars rovers developed and planned by other countries as well as the current status of robot technology in Korea have been analyzed.

Esophageal perforation is a rare but potentially fatal complication of robot-assisted thyroidectomy (RAT). Herein, we report the long-term outcome of an esophageal reconstruction with a jejunal free flap for esophageal rupture after RAT. A 33-year-old woman developed subcutaneous emphysema and hoarseness on postoperative day1 following RAT. Esophageal rupture was diagnosed by computed tomography and endoscopy, and immediate surgical exploration confirmed esophageal rupture, as well as recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. We performed a jejunal free flap repair of the 8-cm defect in the esophagus. End-to-side microvascular anastomoses were created between the right external carotid artery and the jejunal branches of the superior mesenteric artery, and end-to-end anastomosis was performed between the external jugular vein and the jejunal vein. The right recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was repaired with a 4-cm nerve graft from the right ansa cervicalis. Esophagography at 1 year after surgery confirmed that there were no leaks or structures, endoscopy at 1 year confirmed the resolution of vocal cord paralysis, and there were no residual problems with swallowing or speech at a 5-year follow-up examination. RAT requires experienced surgeons with a thorough knowledge of anatomy, as well as adequate resources to quickly and competently address potentially severe complications such as esophageal rupture.

This paper presents a localization system using ceiling images in a large indoor environment. For a system with low cost and complexity, we propose a single camera based system that utilizes ceiling images acquired from a camera installed to point upwards. For reliable operation, we propose a method using hybrid features which include natural landmarks in a natural scene and artificial landmarks observable in an infrared ray domain. Compared with previous works utilizing only infrared based features, our method reduces the required number of artificial features as we exploit both natural and artificial features. In addition, compared with previous works using only natural scene, our method has an advantage in the convergence speed and robustness as an observation of an artificial feature provides a crucial clue for robot pose estimation. In an experiment with challenging situations in a real environment, our method was performed impressively in terms of the robustness and accuracy. To our knowledge, our method is the first ceiling vision based localization method using features from both visible and infrared rays domains. Our system can be easily utilized with a variety of service robot applications in a large indoor environment.
A map of complex environment can be generated using a robot carrying sensors. However, representation of environments directly using the integration of sensor data tells only spatial existence. In order to execute high-level applications, robots need semantic knowledge of the environments. This research investigates the design of a system for recognizing objects in 3D point clouds of urban environments. The proposed system is decomposed into five steps: sequential LIDAR scan, point classification, ground detection and elimination, segmentation, and object classification. This method could classify the various objects in urban environment, such as cars, trees, buildings, posts, etc. The simple methods minimizing time-consuming process are developed to guarantee real-time performance and to perform data classification on-the-fly as data is being acquired. To evaluate performance of the proposed methods, computation time and recognition rate are analyzed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has efficiency in fast understanding the semantic knowledge of a dynamic urban environment.
In this paper, we describe the approaches of shopping agents and directory services for online comparison shopping on the web, and propose an information indexing and retrieval system, named InfoEye, with a new method for automatic extraction of product information. The developed method is based on the knowledge about presentation of the product information on the Web. The method from the knowledge about presentation of the product information is derived from both the point that online stores display their products to customers in easy-to-browse ways and heuristics made of analyses of product information look-and-feel of domestic online stores. In indexing process, the method is applied to product information extraction from Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) documents collected by a mirroring robot from online stores. We have made InfoEye to a readily usable stage and transferred the technology to Webnara commercial shopping engine. The proposed system is a cutting-edge solution to help customers as a shopping expert by providing information about the reasonable price of a product from dozens of online stores, saving customers shopping time, giving information about new products, and comparing quality factors of products in a same category.

For the improvement of productivity, the reduction of cost and time for manufacturing is mandatory, especially in the field of electronic industry. The study is concemed with a practical means of systematic assistance to formability estimation and selection of reliable design specification for electronic sheet metal parts. The objective of this research work is to develop a simulation system which helps to analyze the target processes with the finite element method and to acquire available design data quickly and exactly and exactly. The simulation system developed in the study consists of design verification, selection of optimal combination of parameters, knowledge acquisition and graphical user interface(GUI). Design verification is automatically carried out by using the finite element method. A data base management system and nomograms are utilized for knowledge acquistion. The developed system has been applied to some major sheet metal forming operations such as flanging, embossing, bending and blanking. According to the simulated results, the validation of the target processes has been confirmed. Analysis data, estimation rules of formability and graphical representation of the analysis have been employed for the designer's understanfing and evaluation, thus providing a practical means of robot design and evaluation of formability for production electronic sheet metal parts.

This paper presents an intelligent robotic control method for chamferless parts mating by integrating fuzzy control and neural network. The successful assembly task requires an extremely high position accuracy and a good knowledge of mating parts. However, conventional assembly method alone makes it difficult to achieve satisfactory assembly performance because of the complexity and the uncertainties of the process and its environments such as not only the limitation of the devices performing the assembly but also imperfect knowledge of the parts being assembled. To cope with these problems, an intelligent robotic assembly method is proposed, which is composed of fuzzy controller and learning mechanism based upon neural net. In this method, fuzzy controller copes with the complexity and the uncertainties of the assembly process, while neural network enhances the assembly scheme so as to learn fuzzy rules from experience and adapt to changes in environment of uncertainty and imprecision. The performance of the proposed assembly scheme is evaluted through a series of experiments using SCARA robot. The results show that the proposed control method can be effectively applied to chamferless precision parts mating.

In this paper, we propose a design and implementation method of speed quiz content that can be driven by a social robot capable of interacting with humans, and a method of developing an intelligent module necessary for implementation. In addition, we propose a method of implementing speed quiz content through the process of constructing a map by arranging and connecting intelligent module blocks. Recently, software education has become mandatory and interest in programming is increasing. However, programming is difficult for students without basic knowledge of programming languages to directly access, and interest in block-type programming platforms suitable for beginners is growing. The block-type programming platform used in this paper is a platform that supports immediate and intuitive programming by supporting interactions between humans and robots. In this paper, the intelligent module implemented for the speed quiz content was used by blocking it within a block-type programming platform. In order to implement the scenario of the speed quiz content proposed in this paper, we implement a total of three image-based artificial intelligence modules. In addition to the intelligent module, various functional blocks were placed to implement the speed quiz content. In this paper, we propose a method of designing a speed quiz content scenario and a method of implementing an intelligent module for speed quiz content.

Fuzzy logic rule based controller has many desirable advantages, whih are simple to implement on the real time and need not the information of structure and dynamic characteristics of the system. Thus, nowadays, the scope of the application of the fuzzy logic controller becomes enlarged. But, if the controlled plant is a time-varying/nonlinear system, it is not easy to construct the fuzzy logic rules which need the knowledge of and expert. In this paper, an approach by which the logic control rules can be auto-generated using the genetic algorithm that is known to be very effective in the optimization problem will be proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed approach will be verified by computer simulation of the 2 d.o.f. planner robot.

This paper deals with the application of enhanced perturbation estimation (SMCEPE) to sliding mode control of a dynamic system in the presence of perturbations including external disturbances, unpredictable parameter variations, and unstructured dynamics. Compared to conventional sliding mode control (SMC) and sliding mode control with perturbation estimation (SMCPE), the proposed one can offer robust control performances under serious control conditions, such as fast dynamic perturbations and slow loop-closure speeds, without a priori knowledge on upper bounds of perturbations. The perturbation estimator in SHCEPE also has more adaptability owing to the fractional-order hold technique. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy are demonstrated by a series of simulations on the position tracking control of a two-link robot manipulator.
