  • This paper proposes a double sliding surfaces based on a sliding mode control for a tracking control of nonholonomic mobile robots in the Cartesian coordinates. In order to remove sliding surface constraints, we design the additional sliding surface for the heading angle with respect to the newly defined coordinates. Then, we define the switching law based on the posture error to combine the designed sliding surface with the previous one. By using the double sliding surfaces and the switching law, we obtain the control law for arbitrary trajectories. It is proved that the position tracking error and the heading direction error asymptotically converge to zero, respectively, with the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, through computer simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

  • Machine vision system plays an important role in factory automation. Its many applications are found in automobile manufacturing industries, as an eye for robotic automation system. In this paper, an automobile position measuring vision system(APMVS) applicable to manufacturing line for under body painting of a car is introduced. The APMVS measures position and orientation of the car body to be sealed or painted by the robots. The configuration of the overall robotic sealing/painting system, design and application procedure, and application examples are described.

  • A remote controlled robotic system using the Internet is proposed in this paper. The robotic system can for example act as a substitute for a child who is staying in a hospital. Using the proposed robotic system, the bedridden child can easily look around the inside of his/her classroom, and can talk to other people. The proposed robotic system will encourage a bedridden child to maintain his/her study habits. The robotic system has a CCD camera, a speaker, a microphone, and a PC display on the robot main body. An operator also has a CCD camera, a microphone, and a PC display on the operator desk. The two personal computers are connected using the Internet ...

  • In order to develop a cell based robot, we present a micro-mechanical force measurement system for the biological muscle actuators, which utilize glucose as a power source. The proposed measurement system is composed of a micro-manipulator, a force transducer with a glass probe, a signal processor, an inverted microscope and video recording system. Using this measurement system, the contractile force and frequency of the cardiac myocytes were measured in real time and the magnitudes of the contractile force of each cardiac myocyte under different conditions were compared. From the quantitative experimental results, we could estimate that the force of cardiac myocytes is about $20\sim40{\mu}N$, and show that there are differences between the control cells and the micro-patterned cells.

  • Reinforcement learning is considered as an important tool for robotic learning in unknown/uncertain environments. In this paper, we propose an evaluation function expressed in a vector form to realize multi-dimensional reinforcement learning. The novel feature of the proposed method is that learning one behavior induces parallel learning of other behaviors though the objectives of each behavior are different. In brief, all behaviors watch other behaviors from a critical point of view. Therefore, in the proposed method, there is cross-criticism and parallel learning that make the multi-dimensional learning process more efficient. By ap-plying the proposed learning method, we carried out multi-dimensional evaluation (reward) and multi-dimensional learning simultaneously in one trial. A special neural network (Q-net), in which the weights and the output are represented by vectors, is proposed to realize a critic net-work for Q-learning. The proposed learning method is applied for behavior planning of mobile robots.

  • This paper describes the development of service robotic systems with the Tripodal schematic control architecture. We show practical advantages of the proposed architecture by giving examples of our experience. First, we explain how to add new task using Tripodal architecture approach. The Tripodal architecture provides some crucial organizing principles and core components that are used to build the basis for the system. Thus, the newly developed behaviors, motion algorithm, knowledge, and planning schemes are arranged so as to guarantee the efficiency of the performance of components. Second, we describe the reusability and scaleability of our architecture by introducing the implementation process of the guide robot Jinny. Most of modules developed for former robots like PSR-1 and PSR-2 systems are used directly to the Jinny system without significant modification. Experimental results clearly showed that the developed strategy is useful, even if the hardware configurations as well as software algorithms are more complex and more accumulating.

  • Nowadays, automatic digging operation of an excavator is a big challenge due to the complexity of digging environment, the hardness of soil and buried obstacles into the ground. In order to achieve the maximum soil bucket volume, this paper introduces a novel engineering model that was developed as a virtual excavator in the design phase. Through this model, the designs of mechanical and control systems for autonomous excavator are executed and modified easily before developing in real testbed. Based on a concept of an autonomous excavation, a mechanical system of excavator was first designed in SOLIDWORKS, and a soil model also was modeled by finite-element analysis in ANSYS, both modeled models were then exported to ADAMS environment to investigate the digging behavior through virtual simulation. An intelligent control strategy was generated in MATLAB/Simulink to control the excavator operation. The simulation results were demonstrated by effectiveness of the proposed excavator robot in testing scenarios with many soil types and obstacles.

  • Bluetooth technology is essentially a method for wireless connectivity of a diverse set of devices ranging from PDAs, mobile phone, notebook computers, to another equipments, The bluetooth system both point-to point connection and point-to multipoint connection. In point-to multipoint connection, the channel is shared among several bluetooth devices. Two or more devices sharing the same channel form a piconet. There one master device and up to seven active slave devices in a piconet. The radio operates in the unlicensed 2.45GHz ISM band. This allows users who travel world-wide to use bluetooth equipments anywhere. Since the link is based on frequency-hop spread spectrum, multiple channels can exist at the same time. The bluetooth standard ha s been suggested that bluetooth equipments can be used in the short-range, maximum 100 meters. It has been defined that the time takes to setup and establish a bluetooth connection among devices is 10 seconds. It is a long time and may be a cause to lose a chance of finding other non-fixed devices. We propose a routing protocols for scatternets which can be used to control a mobile units(MUs) in this network. The proposed routing protocol is composed of two kinds of bluetooth information, access point(AP) and MU.

  • A systematic output tracking control design technique for robust control of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with norm bounded uncertainties is developed. The uncertain T-S fuzzy system is first represented as a set of uncertain local linear systems. The tracking problem is then converted into the stabilization problem for a set of uncertain local linear systems thereby leading to a more feasible controller design procedure. A sufficient condition for robust asymptotic output tracking is derived in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities. A stability condition on the traversing time instances is also established. The output tracking control simulation for a flexible-joint robot-arm model is demonstrated, to convincingly show the effectiveness of the proposed system modeling and controller design.
