In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant control system for the position control and vibration suppression of a flexible arm robot. The proposed control system has a strain gauge sensor signal observer based on a reaction force observer and detects a fault by monitoring an estimated error. In order to improve the estimation accuracy, the plant parameters included in the sensor signal observer are updated by using the strain gauge sensor signal in normal time through the adaptive law. After fault detection, the proposed control system exchanges the faulty sensor signal for the estimated one and switches to a fault mode controller so as to maintain the stability and the control performance. We confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed control system through several experiments.

This paper presents a controller for the multiple DC motors using the CAN(Controller Area Network). The controller has a benefit of reducing the cable connections and making the controller boards compact through the network including expansibility. CAN, among the field buses, is a serial communication methodology which has the physical layer and the data link layer in the ISO's OSI (Open System Interconnect) 7 layered reference model. It provides the user with many powerful features including multi-master functionality and the ability to broadcast / multicast telegrams. When we use a microprocessor chip embedding the CAN function, the system becomes more economical and reliable to react shortly in the data transmission. The controller, we proposed, is composed of two main controllers and a sub controller, which have built with a one-chip microprocessor having CAN function. The sub controller is plugged into the Pentium PC to perform a CAN communication, and connected to the main controllers via the CAN. Main controllers are responsible for controlling two motors respectively. Totally four motors, actuators for the biped robot in our laboratory, are controlled in the experiment. We show that the four motors are controlled properly to actuate the biped robot through the network in real time.

This paper describes an advanced formation algorithm of clustered multiple robots for their navigation using flexible formation method for collision avoidance under static environment like narrow corridors. A group of clustered multiple robots finds the lowest path cost for navigation by changing its formation. The suggested flexible method of formation transforms the basic group of mobile robots into specific form when it is confronted by particular geographic feature. In addition, the proposed method suggests to choose a leader robot of the group for the obstacle avoidance and path planning. Firstly, the group of robots forms basic shapes such as triangle, square, pentagon and etc. depending on number of robots. Secondly, the closest to the target location robot is chosen as a leader robot. The chosen leader robot uses $A^*$ for reaching the goal location. The proposed approach improves autonomous formation characteristics and performance of all system.
In the nuclear power plant, there are several cylindrical vessels such as reactor vessel, pressuriser and so on. The vessels are usually constructed by welding large rolled plates, forged sections or nozzle pipes together. In order to assure the integrity of the vessel, these welds should be periodically inspected using sensors such as ultrasonic transducer or visual cameras. This inspection is usually conducted under water to minimize exposure to the radioactively contaminated vessel walls. The inspections have been performed by using a conventional inspection machine with a big structural sturdy column, however, it is so huge and heavy that maintenance and handling of the machine are extremely difficult. It requires much effort to transport the system to the site and also requires continuous use of the utility's polar crane to move the manipulator into the building and then onto the vessel. Setup beside the vessel requires a large volume of work preparation area and several shifts to complete. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed an underwater mobile robot guided by the laser pointer, and performed a series of experiments both in the mockup and in the real reactor vessel. This paper introduces our robotic inspection system and the laser guidance of the mobile robot as well as the results of the functional test.

We are developing a biomimetic robot based on the Sea Lamprey. The robot consists of a cylindrical electronics bay propelled by an undulatory body axis. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators generate propagating flexion waves in five undulatory segments of a polyurethane strip. The behavior of the robot is controlled by an electronic nervous system (ENS) composed of networks of discrete-time map-based neurons and synapses that execute on a digital signal processing chip. Motor neuron action potentials gate power transistors that apply current to the SMA actuators. The ENS consists of a set of segmental central pattern generators (CPGs), modulated by layered command and coordinating neuron networks, that integrate input from exteroceptive sensors including a compass, accelerometers, inclinometers and a short baseline sonar array (SBA). The CPGs instantiate the 3-element hemi-segmental network model established from physiological studies. Anterior and posterior propagating pathways between CPGs mediate intersegmental coordination to generate flexion waves for forward and backward swimming. The command network mediates layered exteroceptive reflexes for homing, primary orientation, and impediment compensation. The SBA allows homing on a sonar beacon by indicating deviations in azimuth and inclination. Inclinometers actuate a bending segment between the hull and undulator to allow climb and dive. Accelerometers can distinguish collisions from impediment to allow compensatory reflexes. Modulatory commands mediate speed control and turning. A SBA communications interface is being developed to allow supervised reactive autonomy.

This paper aims to derive a mathematical model of the dynamics of handling tasks in robot finger which stable grasping and manipulates a rigid object with some dexterity. Firstly, a set of differential equation describing dynamics of the manipulators and object together with geometric constraint of tight area-contacts is formulated by Lagrange's equation. Secondly, problems of controlling both the internal force and the rotation angle of the grasped object under the constraints of area-contacts of tight area-contacts are discussed. The effect of geometric constraints of area-contacts on motion of the overall system is analyzed and a method of computer simulation for overall system of differential-algebraic equations is presented. Thirdly, simulation results are shown and the effects of geometric constraints of area-contact is discussed. Finally, it is shown that even in the simplest case of dual single D.O.F manipulators there exists a sensory feedback from sensing data of the rotational angle of the object to command inputs to joint actuators and this feedback connection from sensing to action eventually realizes secure grasping of the object, provided that the object is of rectangular shape and motion is confined to a horizontal plane.

As the 4th industrial revolution and artificial intelligence technology develop, it is expected that there will be a revolutionary changes in the security robot. However, artificial intelligence system requires enormous hardwares for tremendous computing loads, and there are many challenges that need to be addressed more technologically. This paper introduces precise tracking control technique of autonomous system that need to move repetitive paths for security purpose. The input feedforward signal is generated by using the inverse based iterative learning control theory for the 2 input 2 output nonminimum-phase system which was difficult to overcome by the conventional feedback control system. The simulation results of the input signal generation and precision tracking of given path corresponding to the repetition rate of extreme, such as bandwidth of the system, shows the efficacy of suggested techniques and possibility to be used in military security purposes.

In this paper, we present the results of the performance statistical analysis of the multi-robot formation control based on receding horizon particle swarm optimization (RHPSO). The formation control problem of multi-robot system can be defined as a constrained nonlinear optimization problem when considering collision avoidance between robots. In general, the constrained nonlinear optimization problem has a problem that it takes a long time to find the optimal solution. The RHPSO algorithm was proposed to quickly find a suboptimal solution to the optimization problem of multi-robot formation control. The computational complexity of the RHPSO increases as the number of candidate solutions and generations increases. Therefore, it is important to find a suboptimal solution that can be used for real-time control with minimal candidate solutions and generations. In this paper, we compared the formation error according to the number of candidate solutions and the number of generations. Through numerical simulations under various conditions, the results are analyzed statistically and the minimum number of candidate solutions and the minimum number of generations of the RHPSO algorithm are derived within the allowable control error.

An adaptive output feedback controller is designed for tracking control of an n-link robot manipulator with unknown load. High-gain obwserver that is used to estimate joint velocities is designed to avoide the restriction of the allowable variation range of unknown parmeters as well as improve the state estimation error. We saturate the control inut outside a domain of interest and use an adaptive law with a parameter projection feature to guarantee boundedness of all the trajectories in the closed-loop system. Simulation resutls on a 2-link manipulator illustrate that when the speed of the high-gain observer is sufficiently high, the proposed controller recovers the performance under state feedback control.
Neural networks are used in the framework of sensorbased tracking control of robot manipulators. They learn by practice movements the relationship between PSD ( an analog Position Sensitive Detector) sensor readings for target positions and the joint commands to reach them. Using this configuration, the system can track or follow a moving or stationary object in real time. Furthermore, an efficient neural network architecture has been developed for real time learning. This network uses multiple sets of simple backpropagation networks one of which is selected according to which division (corresponding to a cluster of the self-organizing feature map) in data space the current input data belongs to. This lends itself to a very fast training and processing implementation required for real time control.
