  • Accidental gaseous losses from industrial processes can pose considerable health and environmental risks but assessing their health, safety and environmental impact is problematic. Improved understanding and simulation of the dispersion of emissions in the vicinity of storage tanks is required. The present study aims to assess the capability of the turbulence closures and meshing alternatives in a commercially available CFD code for predicting dispersion in the vicinity of cubes and circular cylindrical storage tanks. The performance of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ and Reynolds Stress turbulence models and meshing alternatives for these cases are compared to experimental data. The CFD simulations are very good qualitatively and, in many cases, quantitatively. A mesh with prismatic elements is more accurate than a tetrahedral mesh. Overall the Reynolds stress model performs slightly better than the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model.

  • As seen from the ammonium chloride experiment (Chen & Chen [1], Roberts & Loper [11], the interface near chimneys has an up-rising shape and we observe thickening of mush next to chimney. We analyze the thermal boundary layer around chimney that forms as the mush is cooled locally by the fluid rising through the chimney. We obtain solutions of the temperature, the solid fraction, and the pressure in the chimney wall. Also, our expression of the pressure shows that the fluid flow can require a huge pressure in order to pass through the chimney wall if its permeability is very small. We present a simple analytic description of the up-rising shape near the exit of the chimney, due to the fact that the comparatively solute (i.e. $NH_4Cl$ in the case of the ammonium chloride experiment)-rich fluid near the chimney tends to crystallize as it is chilled by the rising jet of cold fluid in the chimney.

  • In this study I investigate two implicit arguments in English middles: discharged argument and event argument. I argue that in middle formation external argument is discharged and event argument is suppressed. The proposal can account for the problems with the previous studies (Williams 1981; Keyser and Reoper 1984: Roberts 1987: Fagan 1988, 1992: Chung 2000). When a middle derives from the corresponding transitive verb, the subject argument is discharged, being an implicit argument. Argument discharge is different from argument suppression in the passives and argument deletion in the ergatives. I also argue that event argument is suppressed in middle formation. Event argument suppression is supported by the following: (i) The transitive verbs are always eventive but the corresponding middles are stative, and (ii) the middles are underlyingly eventive, (iii) the middles are “adorned” by certain manner adverbials.

  • Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent results based on numerical techniques that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. It is compared that the dynamic models including van der Waals and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov(DMT) or Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) contact forces demonstrates that periodic solutions can be represented with respect to the approach distance and excitation frequency.

  • Bonding strength of reinforcing material has been recognized to be the most important factor which determines the strengthening effect and the durability of repair work. The properties of bonding layers affects the stress distribution at the end of the plate, therefore the behavior of bonding layer has to be investigated. In this study, the stress distribution at the end of the bonded plate has been tested and compared with Roberts' analysis. Shear stress and vertical normal stress at the end of strengtening plate are analysized and the effedts of bonding layer thickness, plate thickness and plate length on the bonding behavior are tested. The test results showed that thickness is one of the most important factor, which is the thinner the thickness, the smaller the maximum stress.

  • Creativity is an ever-increasing research area related to fashion design, namely the documentation and dissemination of creative scholarship. The purpose of this project is to apply creative bridge or creative leap theory to the development of an existing designer's garment collection using the creative design process of an architect. A single case study design was used to investigate the phenomenon of design process creative leap using a direct observation. Results indicate the difficult challenge of producing new and individualized silhouettes for the marketability of clothing, it is apparent that new methods of fostering creativity in designers through non-traditional approaches would benefit the education of apparel designers. Through targeted design practice, educators and practitioners can apply the principles of scientific inquiry into design processes to solve a problem, address a challenge, or create based on personal inspirations.

  • In tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM), the vibro-contact response of a resonating tip is used to measure the nanoscale topology and other properties of a sample surface. However, the nonlinear tipsurface interactions can affect the tip response and destabilize the tapping mode control. Especially it is difficult to obtain a good scanned image of high adhesion surfaces such as polymers and biomolecules using conventional tapping mode control. In this study, theoretical and experimental investigations are made on the nonlinear dynamics and control of TM-AFM. Also we report the surface adhesion is an additional important parameter to determine the control stability of TM-AFM. In addition, we proved that it was adequate to use Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact model to obtain a reasonable tapping response in AFM for the soft and high adhesion samples.

  • In this paper, we have discussed three-type median filters(SQUARE, CROSS, X-SHAPE) that preserving edge in an original image while reducing random noise was introduced for image enhancement and edge detection on radar image. Since radar image have a number of parts of curve, we compared results produced by edge detection operater proposed for improving the parts of curve with results of using the existing edge detection methods, such as Roberts, Sobel, Prewitt, Laplacian and Kirsch.
