  • The purpose of this study is to obtain a foundation data for chassis design and road noise reduction of automobiles. Using the combination of the automobile, radial tires and instrumentation equipment, experimental investigation were carried out to examine the characteristics of the structural vibration of tire as the key to obtaining the effective parameters for reducing road noise. From the results of experimental studies it has been confirmed that the existence of important frequency ranges, which were attributable to the suspension and chassis system. The tire, axle and chassis natural frequency of automobile govern the road noise. Results that material property of tire and experimental condition are parameter for shifting of tire natural frequency, which enables a designer of an automobile to foresee the influence of the various design factors on the road noise.

  • In this paper, we present noise measurement results of 8 vehicles. The measurement was done by a close proximity method attaching surface microphones on the test vehicle. For the 9 road surface types constructed at Korean highway test road, the vehicles were tested from 50 to 120 km/h at the interval of 10 km/h in normal steady state and inertia cruising conditions. Using the results, we evaluate and discuss the effect of vehicle noise generation depending on the different conditions for vehicle type, speed, road surface and loading condition, especially focused on friction noise between tyre and road surface.

  • In this study, numerical analysis is performed to determine highly influential factors that increase the possibility of asphalt road collapse due to cavity underneath the road. The considered influence factors on road collapse due to underground cavity were the asphalt layer thickness, the cover depth, the cavity width, and the cavity height. The concentrated load and uniform distributed pressure were applied on the top surface of asphalt pavement layers with different shape of cavity and asphalt thickness. For each analysis case of given cavity and asphalt thickness, failure load was analyzed under displacement controlled condition. Based on the analyzed failure loads, the applicability of the cavity management system developed by Seoul city was evaluated. As a result of the analysis, the effect of cavity height on road collapse was not significant while the other factors considerably influenced road collapse. Consequently, degree of road collapse susceptibility should be classified by failure load rather than by the condition of existing cavity.

  • Recently, many researches for autonomous mobile system have been proposed, which can recognize surrounded environment and navigate to destination without outside intervention. The basic sufficient condition for the autonomous mobile system is to navigate to destination safely without accident. In this paper, we propose a path planning method in local region for safe navigation of autonomous system through evaluation of the road surface distortion(damaged/deformed road, unpaved road, obstacle and etc.). We use laser distance sensor to get the information on the road surface distortion and apply image binalization method to evaluate safe region in the detected local region. We show the validity of the proposed method through the computer simulation based on the artificial local road map.

  • Recently, the upheaval generation in the road which is under service had been reported. Due to the upheaval generation, total 4 lanes were forced to curtail to 3 lanes, and traffic was delayed. In normal situation of cut-slopes in korea, that condition is hard to detect since most cut-slopes contain discontinuous material, that is rock. Common collapses in rock-slopes is wedge failure, plane failure and toppling failure which is all individual mechanism of discontinuous rock mass. In contrast, such upheaval in the road in front of cut-slope can be generated only when circular movement is triggered within the cut-slope. In this sense, rock-slopes barely show any kind of movement in the road locates at the front of them. Numerical analysis is general method in simulation of slope displacement and evaluation of safety. However, numerical analysis programs which are related with rock-slopes are not able to simulate such upheaval movement because that programs are based on discontinuous modeling mechanism. In addition, although numerical analysis programs which are based on FEM/FDM and thus utilize continuous modeling mechanism are able to simulate circular movement and upheaval situation, they have weakness in reflecting discontinuities of rock-slope itself. In this study, detailed in-site investigation and numerical analysis based on in-site condition were performed in order to expect upheaval movement in the road. In this procedure, the FLAC program which uses continuous modeling method was utilized, and new approach reflecting discontinuity developed toward the road with a ubiquitous joint model was tried to derive reliable analysis result.

  • In this research an LMI based mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller for a Wheeled Inverted Pendulum is designed and a numerical simulation of that is carried out. The Wheeled Inverted Pendulum is a kind of an inverted pendulum that has two equivalent points. To keep that the naturally unstable equivalent point, a controller should control the wheels persistently. Dynamic equations of the Wheeled Inverted Pendulum are derived with considering inclined road that is one of the representative road conditions. A Linear Matrix Inequality method is used to construct a controller that is able to stabilize the Wheeled Inverted Pendulum with considering the inclined road condition aggressively. Various numerical simulations show that the LMI based controller is doing well on not only flat road but also inclined road condition.

  • In this study, the damages and condition of road pavement were analyzed using pavement management system (PMS) for the structural improvement. Problems of road pavement management were issued by in-depth interview with workers in charge of plant, construction and supervision. By surveying advanced road pavement management, the way how to improve road pavement management in Seoul was discussed. In conclusion, it is necessary to take measures against road heavy traffic and heavy rain in summer. It was found that the problem of early damages of road pavement due to uniform layout with analyzing life cycle cost (LCC). According to the results of survey, it was suggested to strength practical training and to control precisely the temperature of pavement in the process of production and construction.

  • This study analyzes the factors that affect the safety condition level of road-bridges, one of the important infrastructures. Utilizing Binary Logit model, this report empirically identifies the key factors that has influenced the recent assessed safety condition level of the first and the second major types of road-bridges, managed by public agencies, and the changes of the safety level for last six years. As a result of the analysis, the most important factor that influences the safety condition level is not the physical characteristics, but the management quality. As road-bridges are getting older and older, the management quality tends to bring about more differentials in assessing the safety condition level. The safety condition level, C or D, is likely to be improved the level, A or B, is likely to become degraded. To achieve the goal that keep the safety condition level, A and B, more than 90%, it should be considered to make the degrading rate from B to C lower. However, this study includes the limitation on data. It is essential to collect structure data that are spread out in many agencies to complement the limitation for further research.
