  • The various computer programs are used in computer simulation of the traffic noise prediction. But the difference or problem of calculation method used for road traffic noise prediction is not exactly investigated. In this paper, Road traffic noise is predicted on the specific regions by using four prediction methods such as XPS31-133 model(France), RLS-90 model(Germany), ASJ RTN model(Japan) and FHWA model(U.S.A.), which are operated by a program named SoundPLAN, a program to predict road traffic noise. Those prediction values are compared with a measurement value. The results show that four prediction values for taraffic noise are a little different, because of various input factors according to the prediction methods.

  • Recently, reduction of road traffic noise in residential buildings has become one of the most important subjects. To reduce the road traffic noise, noise impact assessment by the road traffic prediction model is required before building construction. For reasonable road traffic noise prediction, it is required to analysis of various factors in road traffic prediction models. This paper was studied the road traffic noise propagation factors such as distance from road to building, receiver height, alignment angle of building and reflection coefficient of the building facade by two calculation models, RLS-90 and CRTN. The result showed that noise reduction was generally higher at bottom stories by ground absorption effect. The reflection coefficient of the building facade was affect of additional sound pressure level by facade reflecting. And alignment angle of building at $90^{\circ}$ was performed effective noise reduction better than $0^{\circ}$.

  • Recently the road traffic noise has appeared as a significant environmental issue because of dramatic increase of vehicles and expansion of newly constructed road. Therefore, this study proposes the method that improves prediction factors and models through analysis of the existing road traffic noise prediction model. Prediction factors can be improved by establishing guideline for diffraction attenuation and applying daily traffic discharge, peak traffic discharge, and average traveling speed through an analysis of level service. Prediction must be made by periods of one or five years during 20 years. Prediction models also can be improved to include better prediction model through setting the database, establishing functional relation between physical properties and noise levels by acoustic analysis, and developing models for road traffic noise prediction in residential areas.

  • This paper suggests the set-up plan of the assessment scope in road noise considering road characteristics with the prediction model of road noise. The RLS90 prediction model with some assumptions is used to establish the assessment scope of road noise. The main contents of the applied assumptions are smooth drive of cars, flat region, location of all noise sources in one lane, drive in design speed, and set-up of assessment scope according to traffic volume and car speed. The information of traffic volume to predict road noise is obtained by the distribution of small cars and full-sized cars in road. In this study, the total traffic volume in road is computed by adding the number of small cars to the conversion number of small cars, which means the number of small cars making the same noise as one full-sized car. The prediction result of road noise with the influence factor of traffic volume, car speed, distance between road and receiver is presented. The resultant assessment scope of road noise is obtained by combining road noise prediction data with the set-up standard of road noise assessment scope.

  • The noise map has been applied to predicting the effect of noise and establishing the noise abatement measure for several years overseas. However the introduction of the noise map in Korea is at the initial stage. Thus, we surveyed the several prediction models for road traffic noise used in EU, and the method of applying the noise map in noise impact assessment. In order to improve the noise impact assessment we have to apply the noise map, and propose the guideline of predicting the road traffic noise. We intend to obtain coherency and accuracy of prediction results. As a result of this study, we know that the prediction guideline is an essential prerequisite in order to predict the unified and accurate road traffic noise.

  • The road traffic noise becomes aggravated due to the rapid increase of vehicles. It has a great effect on the dwelling environment. Therefore we investigate the characteristics and sources of the road traffic noise through grasping the status of the road traffic noise. This paper is concerned with the description of the various factors affecting the generation and propagation of outdoor traffic noise. It is particularly concerned with the mathematical interpretation of these processes and the resulting development of prediction techniques which are now broadly used for both the environment impact assessment of road traffic noise and the planning and design of roads and adjoining land use.

  • A considerable number of methods are available for predicting traffic noise levels of road networks where sound is freely propagating. But surrounding buildings reflect back sound to the road and sound energy is increased by these reflectors. Therefore, this study was focussed on the establishment of the prediction method of road traffic noise under reflective conditions. This prediction method was developed by establishing prediction formulas of noise level such as $L_{10},\;L_{50},\;L_{90}\;and\;L_{eq}$. The sound energy density was employed to establish prediction formulas in terms of independent variables. The validity of the proposed prediction formulas was been confirmed by applying them to actually measured parameters of road traffic noise and noise level data. On the whole, the agreement between measured and predicted noise levels appeared to be satisfactory. The conclusion might be reached that the method developed in this study could be used to predict road traffic noise under reflective conditions.

  • Prediction models currently being used for road traffic noise in apartment are equation of NIER, HW-NOISE of Korea Expressway Corporation, FHWA of United States, CRTN of United Kingdom, NMPB of France, ASJ RTN-Model 2003 of Japan and ISO 9613-1, 2 as a international standard. ISO 9613 species an engineering method for calculating the attenuation of sound during propagation outdoors in order to predict the levels of environmental noise at a distance from a variety of sources. This study, prior to investigation of every prediction methods listed above, aims to examine the model internationally standardized and to establish a reference for the prediction of road traffic noise in apartment.

  • In order to establish a prediction method for road traffic noise generated from actual traffic flow, a new approach is proposed for practical use. One block in urban road is regarded as one box in this study. This prediction method is able to treat any kind of road traffic noise generated from one block. The validity of the proposed prediction method has been experimentally confirmed by applying it to actually observed road traffic noise data. The correlation between observed and predicted noise level is good.

  • The current road traffic noise prediction programs of Korea, which are widely used, are based upon foreign prediction model. Thus, it is necessary to verify foreign prediction models to find out whether they are suitable for the domestic road traffic environment. In addition, an analysis and an in-depth study on the main factors should be conducted in advance as the influence factors on the occurrence of traffic noise vary for each prediction model. Therefore, this study examined the influence factors and the existing prediction models used to forecast road traffic noise. Also, analyzed their relationship with the factors influencing the noise generated by driving vehicles through multiple regression analysis using a prediction model, taking into consideration of the traffic environment and the road geometric structure. In addition, this study will apply experimental values to the existing road traffic noise prediction model (NIER, RLS-90) and the deducted road traffic noise prediction model. As a result, the order of the absolute value sum of the errors are NIER, RLS-90, model value. Through comparison and verification, developed models are to be analyzed for providing basic research results for future study on road traffic noise prediction modeling.
