Performance Analysis of Relay-Based Shipboard Wireless Communication Systems (릴레이 기반 선내 무선통신 시스템의 성능 분석)

  • A wireless ship area network is required to configure and control various sensors and electrical instruments embedded or boarded in a ship. In such environment, wireless communication protocol adopting relaying function is needed because direct link or communication between two nodes is hardly guaranteed due to spatial constraints in a ship. In this study, we introduce and analyze a WiMedia Distributed MAC (D-MAC) based approach considering throughput and energy constraint of wireless communication module. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the relay-based wireless communication protocol improves reliability of wireless communication network in a ship.

  • In this paper, we implements the USN based context-aware vessel system for a group of ships which receives the specific sensor data that is the result of context-aware after collecting from each of the among a group of ships. The received date is shared and managed by monitoring system. If this monitoring system have trouble the sensor from any ship, the it's control was transferred from the main monitoring ship to the any ship and the second main ship collect the data then recognize the context-aware. Also, this system have the advantage of that reduce the load due to the sensor node communication because just collect the optional sensor data.

  • The studios on the stability of damaged ships have been carried out continuously to prevent frequent damages or sinkings which cause large loss of life and fortunes. For dry cargo ships, continuing losses have resulted in new legislation of the probabilistic damage stability. IMO has developed requirements for the subdivison and damage stability of dry cargo ships based on probabilistic concepts. The calculation of the probabilistc damage stability is a complicated and iterative job hence development of computer programs is indispensable. In this research, programming of the probabilistic damage stability according to new requirements has been done and the results were compared with those carried out by the other foreign packages. New algorithm using a grid model in a transversal section was introduced to reduce efforts in preparing input data for damage scenarios and as a result, has brought significant improvement in efficiency and performance.

  • This research paper examines the history and present of 'temporary passengers' prescribed in Paragraph 9 of Article 5 of the Ships Safety Act Enforcement Regulations and suggests improvement plans referring to the examples of legislation of other countries. In 2015, Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries made authoritative interpretation that Paragraph 9 of Article 5 of the Ships Safety Act Enforcement Regulations, which prescribes special cargo drivers such as agricultural, marine or livestock vehicles as temporary passengers, is applied only to passenger ships and not to cargo ships such including Ro-Ro cargo ships. As the authoritative interpretation of the Ministry does not agree with not only the traditional interpretational methodology but also the interpretational methodology that are commonly used today, it lacks logical basis and looks unpersuasive. Paragraph 9 of Article 5 of the Ships Safety Act Enforcement Regulations can be applied not only on passenger ships but also on cargo ships. Also in case of Ro-Ro cargo ships, it is logically contradictory and against fairness not to acknowledge special cargo vehicle drivers as temporary passengers when there is no problem with safe navigation and safety of passengers on board even when the sailor, the sailor's family and the ship owner may be acknowledged as temporary passengers. To avoid unnecessary disputes and lawsuits, improvement plans using theory of legislation through statutory reform is more desirable. Therefore, the P aragraph should be amended to "Supercargo who deals with cargo that requires special care due to the characteristics of the cargo, such as transportation vehicles for agricultural products, marine products, livestock, explosives or flammable materials (drivers can serve as supercargos)" to reflect the distinct characteristics of cargo and ship navigation in Korea including the current distribution system, while setting an objective standard based on common sense of ordinary people and not on arbitrary interpretation.

  • In this paper, we propose a direct sequence ultra wideband (DS-UWB) radar system based on correlation accumulation in the fields of the ship traffic control and the safe ship operation including docking guidance systems. The proposed DS-UWB radar system averages out the noise by accumulating correlator outputs, and thus, provides a reliable distance estimation performance with a shorter estimation time compared with conventional DS-UWB radar systems. From numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed DS-UWB radar system has not only a shorter average correlation processing time, but also a better distance estimation performance.

  • In this paper, we use WiMedia WLP-based networks to meet the demand for IT services of a ship. If a mobile node moves to a congested base station of a new subnetwork, we will propose a scheme for improving performance of radio link of existing communicating mobile nodes. An old base station denotes packets stored during a handover. And, a proposed buffer management determines to discard the buffered packets in accordance with congestion degree at the congested new base station. Simulation results show that the proposed buffer management scheme improves link utilization in congested wireless links.

  • This experimental study investigated in to the flow characteristics around staggered cooling tube arrays of fan coil unit for ship. A particle image velocimetry technique was employed to obtain detailed measurements at inlet-velocity-based Reynolds numbers of $Re=1.5{\times}10^3{\sim}Re=2.5{\times}10^3$. As for the results, the flow evolves rapidly and becomes spatially periodic in the streamwise direction after a relatively short distance. The flow exhibits strong Reynolds number dependence in developing region but no significant Reynolds number effects are observed in spatially periodic region.

  • In this paper, we present a system design for location determination inside the ship. Since the GPS signal can not be received in the interior of the large vessel, we use the vessel wireless AP (Access Point) RSSI (received signal strength indication) to accurately measure the position. We convert the RSSI for the 3 AP's into distance through the Friis formula and get the location through triangulation. The signal strength varies irregularly due to noise making it difficult to obtain the exact location. Thus Kalman filter is used to real-time position correction, that is store in a server database.

  • In this paper, we propose a cooperative protocol of relay-based WUSB/DRD and WLP device in WSS of ship area WiMedia environment. For this purpose, we investigate a RNT table configuration and algorithm of RNS relay node used in relay-based cooperative communication. Then, we describe a device that makes up WLP network and propose a cooperative protocol for WUSB/DRD/WLP device communication. The proposed cooperative protocol can communicate with WUSB/DRD/WLP devices by using standard DRP reservation and WUSB DRP reservation.

Efficient Transmission Schemes in UWB Based Ship Area Networks (UWB기반 선박 네트워크에서 효율적인 전송 기법)

  • In this paper, a concatenated frame algorighm for improving transmission efficiency in WiMedia protocol is studied. And an efficient transmission scheme to reduce the degradation of network performance by the loss of mini-frame is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme can reduce total energy consumption and improve the transmission efficiency since it only retransmits mini-frame in which error is occurred. The simulation results show that proposed protocol can enhance the throughput performance and improve energy efficiency by minimizing the retransmission of mini-frame.
