  • There is a strong industrial demand for the development of light-weight vehicle to improve fuel efficiency and dynamic performance. The effective method of achieving the weight reduction is to use low-density materials such as aluminum and magnesium. In applying these materials to the vehicle, it is often required to join dissimilar materials such as aluminum and steel. However, conventional joining method, namely resistance spot welding cannot be used in joining dissimilar materials. Self·piercing rivet(SPR) and adhesive bonding is a good alternative to resistance spot welding. In this study, the impact test of double hat-shaped member made by resistance spot welding, SPR and adhesive bonding was performed. As a result, various parameters of crashworthiness were analyzed and evaluated. Also, the applicability of SPR and adhesive bonding as an alternative to resistance spot welding was suggested.

간편한 Blowgun의 제작법 (A Simple Method for the Prepartion of Handmade Blowgun)

  • A cheap, simple, and exact method for the preparation of handmade blowgun was studied. The blowgun-dart-adhesive -stand made of plastic syringe shaft was simple and convenient to make a blowgun dart accuratly. The needle end sealing method with wire-lead(solder) made the needle good to secure and simple to make. Because of easy exchangeability, the tail-piece made of yarn and a rivet is able to use permanently. And the materials of this blowgun were inexpensive, common and easily obtainable. This blowgun dart had various capacity up to 12ml.

A methodology for assessing fatigue life of a countersunk riveted lap joint

  • Fatigue life prediction of a multi-row countersunk riveted lap joint was performed numerically. The stress and strain conditions in a highly stressed substructure of the joint were analysed using a global/local finite element (FE) model coupling approach. After validation of the FE models using experimental strain measurements, the stress/strain condition in the local three-dimensional (3D) FE model was simulated under a fatigue loading condition. This local model involved multiple load cases with nonlinearity in material properties, geometric deformation, and contact boundary conditions. The resulting stresses and strains were used in the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) strain life equation to assess the fatigue "initiation life", defined as the life to a 0.5 mm deep crack. Effects of the rivet-hole clearance and rivet head deformation on the predicted fatigue life were identified, and good agreement in the fatigue life was obtained between the experimental and the numerical results. Further crack growth from a 0.5 mm crack to the first linkup of two adjacent cracks was evaluated using the NRC in-house tool, CanGROW. Good correlation in the fatigue life was also obtained between the experimental result and the crack growth analysis. The study shows that the selected methodology is promising for assessing the fatigue life for the lap joint, which is expected to improve research efficiency by reducing test quantity and cost.

  • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) process is gaining popularity due to its many advantages. The SPR does not require a pre-drilled hole and has capability to join a wide range of similar or dissimilar materials and combinations of materials. This study investigated the fatigue strength of self-piercing rivet joint with aluminum alloy (Al-5052) and steel (SPCC) sheets. Static and fatigue tests on tensile-shear specimens were conducted. From the static strength aspect, the optimal punching force for the specimen with upper SPCC (U.S) sheet and lower aluminum alloy(L.A) sheets was 34 kN. During static test the specimens fractured in pull-out fracture mode due to influence of plastic deformation of joining area. There was a relationship between applied load amplitude $P_{amp}$ and number of cycles N ; $P_{amp}=19588N_f^{-0.211}$ and $P_{amp}=4885N_f^{-0.083}$ for U.S-L.A and U.A-L.S specimens, respectively. U.A-L.S fatigue specimens failed due to fretting crack initiation around the rivet neck between upper and lower sheets.

운전석 에어백을 장착한 중형 트럭의 승객거동해석을 위한 유한요소 모델의 개발 (Development of a Finite Element Model for Studying the Occupant Behavior of a Mid-Size Truck with a Driver Side Airbag)

  • This paper develops a finite element model for studying occupant behavior of a mid-size truck equipped with a driver side airbag. The developed model simulates an occupant behavior using PAM-CRASH/PAM-SAFE in super computer SP2. The model is developed based on a sled test. A 50% hybrid dummy III is used for measuring head and chest accelerations and femur loads, and major injury coefficients such as HIC, CA and femur load. Inferior components such as foot rest, seat, kneebolster, crash pad, etc. are roughly modeled and defined by a rigid material model. And contact type II is used for detecting a contact with dummy. Contact type II definition uses force-deflection relationship of each body Such components as steering column which directly affect on the occupant injuy are modeled in detail and defined by an elastic-plastic material model. Airbag cushion is modeled using rivet elements. Airbag cover groove is modeled using rivet elements. Airbag tether is modeled as nonlinear bar elements. Airbag model has two vent holes to ventilating the exploded gas. Airbag is folded close to the real airbag folding procedure, and folded cautiously in order not to have initial penetration. A vehicle pulse acquired from 31mph frontal barrier test is used as input signal for the simulation. The simulation conditions are tuned to the sled test ones. The measured dummy accelerations and major injury coefficients, and filmed dummy behavior and airbag inflation process using high speed camera are compared to the simulation results to verify the developed finite element model.

  • The mechanical jointing method is very important in the machine parts and structure. They are used by the bolts and rivet because it is very convenient to replace the parts and the structure. However, the mechanical jointing methods using the bolt and rivet needed the open hole. The machine parts life cycle is reduced because this open hole created the stress concentration. Therefore, the measurement methods are needed to evaluate phenomenon of the stress concentration. This paper discusses the development of the measurement algorithm using the digital image correlation methods to measure the strain distribution of the open hole. To implement the measurement algorithm using the DIC, the LabVIEW 2010 programming tool was used. To measure the strain distribution of the open hole, the tensile specimens having an open hole are made by using the aluminum 6061-T6. To secure the reliability of measurement result using the DIC, the DIC measurement results and FEM analysis results were compared.

  • PDP(Plasma Display Panel) 프레임은 PDP의 핵심 부품으로 매월 수 십 만개 이상을 생산하고 있다. 대량생산 과정에서 제품의 검사 과정은 매우 중요한 공정 단계이며 제품의 신뢰성을 높이기 위해 모든 부품과 완제품에 대한 전수 검사가 종종 요구되고 있다. 본 논문에서 구현 하고자 하는 시각 검사 공정의 자동화는 생산 현장에서 컴퓨터 비전 기술을 이용하여 PDP 부품의 일부인 프레임의 결함을 검사한다. 본 논문은 PDP 프레임에 있는 홀(Hole), 탭홀(Tab), 스터드(STUD), 리벳(Rivet)의 결함을 검사하는 시스템을 설계하고 구현 하였다. 본 시스템은 다양한 종류의 PDP 프레임을 학습하고 검사 할 수 있다. 모든 제품에 대한 신속하고 정확하게 100% 검사를 함으로써 공정의 효율성을 높이고 검사결과의 데이터베이스화로 신속한 결함의 원인파악과 조치가 가능하도록 하였다. 시스템을 산업체에 적용한 결과 신속하고 정확한 검사가 가능함을 보였다.

리벳구멍을 가진 알루미늄 패널에서 피로균열의 탐지와 균열길이 측정 (Detection and Sizing of Fatigue Cracks in Thin Aluminum Panel with Rivet Holes)

  • 항공기 구조를 모사하여 일련의 리벳구멍을 갖는 AA2024-T3 박판 구조를 대상으로 음향방출(AE)을 이용하여 피로균열을 탐지하고, 표면초음파(SAW)를 이용하여 균열길이를 측정하였다. 누적 AE 발생수 곡선은 단균열(short crack)의 발생과 성장에 따라 일정한 간격을 두고 급격히 증가하는 계단식 형태로 나타났으나 피로균열의 성장은 지수함수적인 증가를 보였다. SAW를 이용한 균열길이 측정은 균열길이가 다른 13개의 균열에 대하여 실시하였고, 측정된 데이터를 이동식 현미경으로 측정한 결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과 1 mm 이하의 단균열의 크기를 표면초음파 방법으로 측정하는 것은 거의 불가능하였으나, 1 mm 이상의 균열에서는 비교적 높은 신뢰도로 균열길이 측정이 가능함을 확인함으로써 실용적인 측면에서 이 방법이 유효하게 사용될 수 있는 영역이 존재함을 알 수 있었다.

  • No one can tell when, exactly, the conservation of potteries & ceramics began, however, according to the documents, it has a long history. Among the materials discovered up to the present, organic adhesives extracted from animals and plants such as bitumen were mainly used and resin, in 19th century, as well. As for inorganic adhesives, clay, lime and plaster were used as well as rivet, as one of mechanical methods. According to the conservation case studies in Korea, lacquer and gilding powdered gold were applied as treatment methods in some ceramics, but, in general, plaster and resins were used widely.

  • This study is an introduction of ADS in which we have written out programs which can design three-dimensional machine parts and reduce the required time for design them comparing with other CADs. Among the machine parts, screws are commonly used in joining one part to another because of easy handing but welding and rivet are used to join permanently them even thought hard operation. Consequently, we have developed the screw fer permanent fixing using stairs type screw threads, which is considered as the main machine parts in joining. For that, we designed permanent fastened screws according to the different rotation angle using VisualLISP and transferred it to ANSYS, structural solution program, to find out allowance load, maximum equivalent stress and where it occur.
