  • Embankment Slope (or Fill Slope) is defined as artificial slope formed by the filling of soil or rocks on the original ground. Recently a lot of embankment failures and collapse has occurred due to the increase of torrential rainfall and typhoons. Embankment collapse has lead to a great loss of lives and property therefore there is a need to establish a systematic embankment slope management system that will handle the maintenance and repair of risky embankment slopes. The objective of this study is to establish an "Embankment Slope Management Method" for embankment slopes located along national highways all over Korea. The method for field investigation of embankment slopes was recommended and the system for investment priority determination was also developed. The factors that lead to the collapse of embankment slopes caused by natural calamities were also determined through the initial survey of embankment slopes located along river fronts and mountainous areas.

  • The movement of water through a river embankment and its influenced upon the stability of the slope of the embankment are described. The stability of the embankment is depended upon the location of seepage line. As the seepage flow occurs in the embankment, the slope of the embankment loses its stability. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of water level. The variation of seepage line in the embankment model by a fluctuation of water level is discussed. The experimental models were construction with slopes of 1 : 1.5, 1 : 2.0, 1 : 2.5 and the flow velocity was turned from 60cm/sec~90cm/sec. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn. 1) When water level is raised, the seepage line of downstream slope Is raised rapidly as flow velocity increases. 2) For the case of permeable layer, the seepage line raised rapidly as compare with impermeable layer when water lever is raised.

  • For the purpose of studying on the seepage characteristics of embedded gravel layer in embankment, laboratory model tests were carried out. The embedded layer under embankment was $19{\sim}26mm$ diameter of gravel and those embankment materials were Saemangum dredged sand, river sand and mixed(1:1) sand with dredged and river one. Those permeability coefficients of three different sands are $5.00{\times}10^{-5}$, $3.00{\times}10^{-4}$, $7.50{\times}10^{-5}m/s$, respectively. Seepage characteristics of these results are as follows; 1) The Reynolds number of water flow through embedded gravel layer in three different permeable soils is less then 10, it is laminar flow. 2) These flow velocities through embedded gravel layer in soils are in proportion to these hydraulic gradients, it is Darcy flow. 3) These Darcian permeability coefficients of water flow through embedded gravel layer in soils show as $2.95{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.38{\times}10^{-2}$, $3.33{\times}10^{-3}$m/s, respectively, by varying permeability of embankment soils and embankment lengths. It is approximately 100 times of those permeability coefficients of embankment materials.

  • Sandmats are used to dissipate trapped water rapidly from the embankment built on marine soft ground. At present, however, it becomes difficult to obtain qualified sands since natural resources such as river sand are to exhausted. Also, low permeability of sand may cause low degree of consolidation and instability of embankment. In this study, design and construction methods was discussed. Drainage capacities of prefabricated horizontal drains which were installed in highway construction site are investigated in order to find possible substitution for river sands as drainage materials. On the basis of measurement data at the construction site, it was concluded that use of the prefabricated horizontal drains shows satisfactory drainage capacity without instability of embankment.

  • Lots of river embankments or levees in Korea are quite so old and unknown the origin even. The river deposits, moreover, obtainable easily somewhere were used for materials of embankment without any technical considerations such as the influence soil properties and construction methods on embankment stability. It's natural that safety would be threatened if the water level rises due to flood or rainfall when it comes to abnormal weather conditions, especially. From this point of view, enlargement of embankment, irrigation works, etc. are in progress recently at the situation from a reinforcement work. However, taking influence of soil properties and construction methods on embankment stability into account against cracking or piping is still insufficient. Fragmentary design criteria or irrational construction methods are applied rather as the case may be. In this study, therefore, a way to estimate piping and cracking resistance (Sherard, 1953) has been introduced and reevaluated for practical use with an eye to material properties and its applicability to piping-experienced embankments was examined. Piping possibility was also examined in the present design criteria and compared. In view of the results achieved, it reflects that both yield piping possibility. But it's still necessary to complement how to judge and verify piping resistance of given soils with gradation curves by the representative curve, quantitatively and that piping resistance should consider compaction effects as well.

  • It is needed to install a one-way drainage filter to prevent a seepage from lake or river outside of embankment and to promote a drainage from a flood inside of embankment when dikes such as lake dike, river dike, etc are constructed. However, the results of research for one-way drainage filter are insufficient. Therefore, through the field test of one-way drainage filter, this study checked a function of one-way drainage filter with a test of performance. As a result of field test, water flow in dike was blocked in the interception direction of the section that one-way drainage filter was installed, but water passed to the flow allowance direction of the section. Therefore we confirmed the function of one-way drainage filter. Seepage quantity in the flow allowance direction of the one-way drainage filter section was low as 74.6~80.5 % than that in the section without installation of filter because of a reduction effect of seepage with filter. And seepage quantity of field test was low as 64.3~90.0 % than that in results of seepage analysis because the coefficient of permeability of embankment in field is different from the results of laboratory test. In the future, more study will be needed to solve several problems which are related to fix the filter on slide, durability of filter, etc.

  • This study analyzes the change of stability of embankment due to the construction of embankment combined used road with two different construction phases. The stabilities have been checked both in the phase of earth banking for a road construction and in the phase of the application of the traffic roads(DB-24). In both cases the factor of safety has been found higher than 1.3 which is the general criterion of the safety of an embankment. The results indicate that the safety of an embankment due to the construction of embankment combined use road is assured, and thus, it is thought that the construction of embankment combined use road can be considered for cutting down on expenses of construction sites for a road construction. However, the pre-examination of stability due to the construction should be carried out because it decreases the factor of safety of an embankment. From this study, it has been found that the factor of safety was dropped most when the water level rose in the transient flow. The result indicates that the stability analysis of a river embankment where the water level changes frequently should be carried out in the condition of transient flow. It is recommended that the inner side of an embankment should have a slope of 1:2 which is identical with the slope of the existing embankment. In addition, the factor of safety also can be decreased due to the traffic loads, and therefore, the effect should also be considered after the construction of embankment combined used road limiting the traffic loads.

  • Biopolymer based on microbial β-glucan and xanthan gum is effective for vegetation and has a function of enhancing soil strength, which can be used as soil reinforcement and stabilization materials in river embankment. The purpose of this study is to verify the vegetation effect of the surface of levee by biopolymer with seed spraying method. Mixed soils with biopolymer were used to cover the surface of embankments. The strength is higher in biopolymer-treated soil and xanthan gum based biopolymer has advantage for quality control in field scale. In addition, the vegetation of F. arundinacea and L. perenne showed various reactions with types of biopolymers. Biopolymer has a positive effect on the vegetation of them. In contrast, root growth tended to decrease in biopolymer-treated soils. The results indicate that root growth is slow down due to increasing ability to retain water in biopolymer-treated soil. In order to apply biopolymer to river embankment, it is necessary to examine the effects of biopolymers on a wide range of plant species in river embankment.

  • River-side Embankment collapse involves various causes. The embankment collapse due to internal erosion around embedded structures reaches up to more than 10% in Korea. Many studies are being attempted to prevent from the collapse of the embankment rooted from overtopping and instability as well as internal erosion. One of them is the study on the application of biopolymers. The application of biopolymers to soils are divided into enhancing strength, vegetation and erosion resistance. This study investigated the effect of biopolymer treated soil on erosion resistance. The main goal of the study is to obtain basic data for real-scale experiments to verify the effectiveness of biopolymer treated soil embankment including a review of the collapse pattern in the model embankment with various test conditions. The optimized experimental conditions were selected by examining the erosion patterns according to each induction path with three compaction degree of the model embankment. As a result of the experiment, the internal erosion rate in the embankment to which the biopolymer treated soil was applied is greatly reduced, and it could be concluded that it might be applied to the actual embankment. However, in this study, the conclusion was drawn only within the scaled-down model embankment. In order to practically apply the biopolymer treated soil to the embankment, the study considering the scale effect would be needed.
