The coastal area forms various sedimentary layers according to the environmental conditions such as the topography and geological features of the upper region of the river, ocean currents, and river mouth. Therefore, identifying the characteristics of the marine clay deposited in the coastal area plays a key role in the investigation of the formation of soft ground. In general, alluvial grounds are formed by a variety of factors such as changes in topography and natural environment, they have very diverse qualities depending on the deposited region or sedimentation conditions. The most important thing for the construction of social infrastructures in soft ground areas is economical and efficient treatment of soft ground. In this study, the author collected data from diverse laboratory and field tests on five areas in western and southern offshore with relatively high reliability, and then statistically analyzed them, thereby presenting standard constants for construction design. Correlation between design parameters such as over consolidation ratio, preconsolidation pressure was analyzed using linear and non-linear regression analyses. Also, proposed distribution characteristics of design parameters in consideration of each region's uncertainty through statistical analyses such as normality verification, outlier removal.

Each river confluence has the inherent hydraulic and mixing characteristics coming from its bathymetry and topography. It is necessary to make the measurement covering the spatial extent of studying area in order to catch these 2-dimensional intrinsic characteristics. This study focuses to investigate the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at the confluence of Nakdong and Geumho River, from field measurement of flow, water quality, and suspended particle distribution with ADCP (Riversurveyor M9), multi-parameter water quality sonde (YSI6600V2), and submersible system for in-situ observations of particle size distribution and volume concentration (LISST : Laser In-Situ Scattering & Transmissometry), respectively. From the results, it can be found that the field measurement of suspended particle and water quality distribution can be the useful approach to catch the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at a river confluence.

Located in the southwestern part of Korea, the Yong San Gang river flows generally northeast to southwest, and because of the specific location, topography and climate, the basin area is subject to recurrent drought and flood damages. To eliminate the cause of such damages and ensure an increase in the farm income by means of effective irrigation supply and increased cropping intensity, efforts are being made to speed up implementation of an integrated agricultural development project which would include construction. of an estuary dam and irrigation facilities as well as land development and tidal reclarnation. In formulating a basin development project plan, it is necessary to study a series of long-term runoff data. The catchment area at the proposed estuary damsite is 3,471$\textrm{km}^2$ with the total length of the river channel up to this point reaching 138km. An analysis of runoff in this area was carried out. Rainfall was estimated by the Thiessen Network based on records available from 15 of the rainfall observation stations within the area. Out of the 15 stations, Kwang Ju and Mok Po stations were keeping long-term precipitation records exceeding some 60 years while the others were in possession of only 5-10 years records. The long-term records kept by those stations located in the center of the basin were used as base records and records kept by the remaining stations were supplemented using the coefficient of correlation between the records kept by the base stations and the remainder. The analyses indicate that the average annual rainfall measured at Kwang Ju during 1940-1972 (33 years) amounts to 1,262mm and the areal rainfall amounts to 1,236mm. For the purpose of runoff analysis, 7 observatories, were set up in the middle and lower reaches of the river and periodic measurements made by these stations permitted analysis of water levels and river flows. In particular, the long-term data available from Na Ju station significantly contributed to the analysis. The analysis, made by 4-stage Tank method, shows that the average annual runoff during 1940-1972 amounts to 2,189 million ㎥ at the runoff rate of 51%. As for the amount of monthly runoff, the maximum is 484.2 million ㎥ in July while the minimum is 48.3 million ㎥ in January.

Recently, more attention has been paid to the geomorphological changes in the Nakdong River Estuary, because those changes are caused by artificial activities including weirs, reclamation and construction. In order to analyze quantitatively the recent geomorphological variability in the Nakdong River Estuary, we surveyed the depth and elevation of submarine topography near Jinwoodo and Sinjado from March 2007 to February 2012. A statistical method (based on Digital Shoreline Analysis System) and an Empirical Orthogonal Functions method were used to evaluate the morphological changes. According to the statistical variables (DCE, NDC, EPR, LRR), the highest amount and rate of accumulation were recorded around the Gadeokdo whereas the greatest amount of erosion appeared around the coast off the eastern part of Sinjado. In particular, a dynamic variation of morphology was clearly observed in the vicinity of the sub-tidal channel located between Jinwoodo and Sinjado, which seems to be attributable to channel migration. As a result of the EOF method, the first mode (48.7%) is most closely related to the pattern of morphological variability that might be associated with the westerly movement of sediment by longshore current. The spatial variability of the second mode (16.6%) was high in the shoreface of Sinjado, showing a 4-year periodicity of temporal variability. The strong correlation (coefficient 0.73) between the time coefficient and suspended sediment discharge from Nakdong River emphasizes the role of sediment discharge to deposition in this area. The spatial variability of the third mode (11.3%) was distributed mainly around the coast off the eastern part of Sinjado, which is related to the movement of the coastline of Sinjado. Based on the last 5 year's data, our results suggest that the study area is characterized on the whole by a depositional pattern, but the extent of sedimentation is different locally.
In Korea, riverbank filtration has drawn attention since 1990's as an alternative having potential to stably meet the ever-increasing water demand. Some cities located in the Nak-dong River Basin are currently supplying water through riverbank filtration. This research is on the application of riverbank filtration for stable water quality in Seoul. For this purpose, we have evaluated developable amount of water with riverbank filtration for the Han River. This paper focuses on the Kwangnaru site, which was selected through a systematic analysis in the companion paper. We have conducted groundwater modeling for a proposed system of wells and an artificial lake. In the Kwangnaru district, the river length to constitute a well system was identified to be about 1,200m, due to the topography and the field condition such as ecosystem preservation zone. After many design changes, it was found that the maximum developable amount of $23.36\;million\;m^3$/year could be obtained, when 16 pumping wells were built in every 80 meters along with an artificial lake upstream.
Estuary is unique habitat ground under substantial changes of water quality, river side, bed material, and micro topography. Construction of SinGok underwater weir with excessive dredging for downstream of weir has changed hydraulic conditions of Han River. This study investigates spatial changes of estuary and expansion process of vegetation on sandbar for JangHang estuary in Han River through analysis of physical and ecological characteristics. As a result of investigation, we found that area of sandbar in JangHang estuary is expanded six times compared between 1985 and 2006, and area of Phragmites australis is gradually decreased while area of Salix subfragilis Anderson. is increased. Also the analysis result of soil layer shows that the Jang-Hang wetlands are created by effect from river, and woody plants are settled from middle part of wetlands, then spread to upper and lower part of wetlands.
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is promising, sustainable and efficient air transportation in a metropolitan area. Korean government has recently announced operation demonstration plans as a step toward commercialization of UAM. However, there is lack of understanding on the potential impact of weather on UAM operation. We collected weather observations from Gimpo International Airport and 5 automatic weather stations (AWS) along UAM corridor of the Han-River to assess weather barriers such as low visibility, wind gust and wind shear. The results show the frequency of low visibility near the corridor fluctuated significantly from year to year depending on the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Seoul. The frequency of high wind speed-shift calculated using 1-minute wind observations was increased not only during the spring season (March, April, and May) but also the beginning of rainy season (Jun). In addition, a chance of high wind shear from 1-minute wind observations varied by the stations, suggesting that the condition is largely affected by topography including a river and high-rise buildings. These basic weather properties suggest that there are substantial weather barriers to UAM operations along the Han-River Corridor, while they cannot properly surveil micro-scale weather conditions in detail such as wind gust and wind shear over the corridor. Thus, this study suggests that potential barriers related to adverse weather need to be evaluated, building high-density weather observations infrastructure prior to UAM demonstration and commercialization.
This study estimates geomorphological processes of fluvial terraces by uplifts and bedrock features, by the analyses of topography, distribution, formation age and incision rate of fluvial terraces using Gwang-cheon River in Uljin, Namdae-cheon River in Pyeonghae and Osip-cheon River in Yeongdeok located in the southern Taebaek Mountain Range. The tectonic and climatic terraces I in the upper reaches of Gwang-cheon River with an altitude from riverbed of 9~12m indicate the formation age of MIS 2 with a incision rate of 0.40m/ka. However, the tectonic and climatic terraces I in the upper reaches of Osip-cheon River with an altitude from riverbed of 7~10m show the formation age of MIS 3 with an incision rate of 0.10m/ka. These results suggest that the uplift rate in the Gwang-cheon River basin is likely to be higher than that in the Osip-cheon River basin. Unlike the lower reaches of Osip-cheon River, the thalassostatic terraces are not found in the lower reaches of Gwang-cheon River, because the basin has low maintainable ability of landforms in river valley due to high uplift rate and bedrock properties resistant to weathering and erosion. On the other hand, the lowest tectonic and climatic terraces in the study areas indicate different formative ages and the terraces during the cooling stage in interglacial as well as during interstadial are also found. Therefore, this study suggests that chronological method for fluvial terrace by the previous developmental model of climatic terrace should be reconsidered.

An interesting property of meandering river patterns is that they slowly deform, as bank erosion on one side of a channel and deposition on the other side result in the location of the channel. In this study we used a sine-generated meander pattern proposed by Langbein and Leopold(1966) to develop a solution of a linear, second-order differential equation of transverse bed slope(bed topography) proposed by Odgaard(1986). A new model for transverse bed slope(bed topography), that accounts for the phase lag and the influence of the width to depth aspect ratio, was developed in this study and compared with results of field measurements.

In this study, was proposed a numerical scheme imposing exact solutions as the internal boundary conditions for the shallow-water flows over a discontinuous transverse structure such as a step. The HLLL approximate Riemann solver with the MUSCL was used for the test of the proposed scheme. Very good agreement was obtained between simulations and exact solutions for various problems of the shallow-water flows over a step. In addition, results by the numerical model showed good agreement with those of dam-break experiments over a step and stepped chute one. Developed model can simulate the shallow-water flows over discontinuous bottom such as a drop structure without additional rating curve or topography smoothing. Given the proper evaluations for the flow resistance by a step and the energy loss by the nappe flow in the future, could be simulated flooding and drying of the shallow-water flows over discontinuous topography such as a weir or the river road with retaining wall.
